A touch of CLASS: Maestro and Rover 600 for sale

1985 Austin Maestro 1.3 Base

Due to the purchase of a new and very exciting old crock, my trusty Maestro is reluctantly up for grabs.

It'll be familiar to most older members on here. I've owned it twice, first buying it in 2010. One little old lady before me, then Garycox had it for a while, then I bought it back in 2013.

MoT is April 2018, taxed to get you home. Exceptionally reliable, easy starter after I managed to track down a good quality manual choke conversion kit.

Mileage is just over 62,000.

Parts fitted in my ownership:

Brand new set of Michelin tyres last year.

Manual choke conversion

New clutch last year

Unleaded head fitted which I bought from M'coli

New exhaust fitted 2014

New front shocks fitted 2014

New headlining fitted 2014 (using the correct type of adhesive so no more sagging)

Good secondhand heater pipes fitted behind the dashboard. This is a common fault and these ones are bone dry. The heater is excellent. Everything works, bar the rear windscreen washer.

New front wings.

DMB replica plates and sticker

Period 'Austin Rover' mudflaps

New brake light switch and rear shock absorber fitted for the MoT in April.

It was resprayed in 2014, and has mostly lived outside since then, so there's a few small bits of rust coming through. There are some scabs on the rear arches and on the roof. For a 32 year old Maestro, it's in bloody good nick though.

It tends to burn a bit of oil on long journeys, especially on the motorway. The head would benefit from new valve guides/seals or just fit an exchange head from Minispares. It's quite usable as is though, I've kept it topped up in the time I've been using it. The bottom end of the engine is excellent; the oil light always goes out straight away and it's exceptionally smooth.

There you go. It's the (much rarer) MK1 Maestro in 1.3 Base form, in Champagne Beige with Bitter Chocolate interior. Only modifications from standard are the addition of the 12v socket, rear seat belts, unleaded head and manual choke conversion.

I've got a few spare parts to go with it, some spare MK1 brown interior trim and if I get my asking price, an absolutely mint rear passenger door, which is the worst bit of rust on the car. I've welded it and it's solid, just not as nice as I'd like.

The original radio works but the ariel lead is trapped down the A pillar, so will require threading through behind the dash and reconnecting. It has a towbar and electrics, which works and even has a warning buzzer for the trailer indicators.

I never intended to sell this car, hence spending all this money on bits with the intention of keeping it, but needs must!

I'd like £750.

1999 Rover 618 Auto

This is my dad's car. He's owned it for the last three years. Before him it was a dealer demonstrator, then one private owner. It has a nearly full service history, and had the cambelt done two years ago, along with a new set of tyres, and a full new exhaust system, including the front pipe. It had new brake pads, a service and a new windscreen last year.

Unfortunately, the car was involved an an altercation on a roundabout with a Nissan Qashqai, and is a little crumpled down the drivers side. The scrape T-cut off and the larger dents have pushed out. Someone with a bit more panel beating ability could get it looking much better I'm sure. The damage doesn't affect the opening and closing of the doors - the structure of the car is unaffected.

Dad has lost confidence driving it and wants rid. It's a bloody good car - drives really nicely with plenty of power, the autobox is beautifully smooth and the brakes are sharp. The air con works, though it could do with a regas. All electric windows are fine. I've used it myself on a few occasions when my cars have been broken and it's very comfortable indeed.

Oh, the passenger side door mirror is off a BRG car as some kind person smashed it off and drove off when he forgot to fold it in one night (we live on a busy road)

It's MoT'd until 21st July. Obviously no guarantees that it will pass easily, but I don't see anything that will obviously fail. Mileage is 135,000. Surprisingly for a 600, there is no rot anywhere that I can see, the rear arches are like new. There are the usual car park dings and scrapes and some small dents you'd expect for the age and mileage.

The best thing about it is the interior. It's got that lovely cream leather with cream dashboard, which is all in good condition, and it even still has all four of its original cream 'Rover 600 series' mats.

I'd like £200.

Both cars are in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, approximately 25 minutes from Jct 29 of the M25.

Both ace, I'd be all over the 600 if I wasn't having to be all sensible at the moment.  Shame to see the Maestro up for sale, I hope its replacement is something equally brilliant and it gets to stay in the community.

If that does someone as a good a turn as FathaAngry's last 600 that I bought, they'll be doing alright. Best maintained shitter I've had for years- had a brand new spare!

Just spoke to daughter that had it but she's happy with the 307 ( also off a Shiter) because hatchback.

So GSLWT or whatever.

Sorry to see you're getting rid of these Dicky.

The 'stro is lovely, I had the honour of being chauffeured to Southampton & Portsmouth for Solent Shitters in it last year, a round trip of a couple of hundred miles and can vouch for it's solidness, fine reliability and effortless cruising ability.

Isn't it just!  Dicky, if you were in Lancashire instead of Essex I suspect you'd be down to one For Sale by now.

Bump.

Both these cars are still for sale. The Rover passed its MoT yesterday so now has 12 months test! And the price has only gone up to £230! Come on, it's a brilliant car, and drives laaavely.

Hey AngryDicky. Can I give this beautiful thread a free bump and at the same time ask if the 600 is still available?

Maestro now sold, deposit taken. It's off to live in Leicestershire, with a chap who's got a huge fleet of mainly BMC/BL stuff.

Since the R600 passed its MoT, we've decided it's too useful to sell so I'm going to use it as a commuter for my new job!
