When fuel is bubbling in the filter, you know things are too hot.""...............discovered that the Police can be very expensive...!

Silver Foil, folded several times to create a heat shield and a few cable ties to hold it suspended between heat source and Filter........you did pack the Cable Ties didn't you......

As for the Rozzers, same the world over innit.........Cable ties and gaffer tape......round the nearest tree........probably just as well you didn't pack the cable ties and gaffer tape innit.

Top notch on redefining the boundaries on 'Banger Rally'. I mean, buying a £400 car in the U.K. and prepping it before hand is all a bit tame really compared to you guys exploits.

Is your fuel filter in it's proper place, between the fuel line coming from the tank and the fuel pump, or it's where most Romanians fitted a secondary one, between the pump and carb? The fuel hose should bee thick enough not to allow heat to transfer to petrol, and if it's between the engine block and the left inner wing (where it should be if fitted in it's proper place, at about 4 inches from the engine block) it wouldn't have heat issues. Also, the old type was a glass body (decanter style, lines coming in the upper part and gunk staying on the bottom of the glass) with a paper cartridge inside. Long gone too, I'm afraid.

The fuel return line is directly from the pump.

Trying to recall now, but I think it is between pump and carb - not the coolest of spots!

I'm still curious as to why Yugoplod pulled you over.  To me, two hippies in an ancient Dacia doesn't immediately scream "easy financial gain"...

The guys enjoyed their bromance in the Balkans so much they decided to stay on, 15 years after Dollys successful gender reassignment the couple are pictured happy and carefree in the land of chod.

The fuel return line is directly from the pump.

Here's your issue.

The fuel circulating betwixt tank and pump (and back) is probably at a sensible temperature. The bit of fuel between the pump and the carb is the bit that is overheating. If that line incorporates a modern cheapo filter, that will be where the heat is getting in.

Move the filter to the constantly-circulating fuel line (in the line from tank to pump inlet) and make the bit from the pump to the carb both as short as possible, and from the heaviest gauge fuel line you can find. And in cooler air if possible.

Or just ignore it and don't try to hot-restart.

Or you can prime the line by hand: remove fuel line from carburetor inlet pipe, press the "tail" of the fuel pump by hand. The spring will raise it back, and you can see if the fuel filter fills with petrol, and when fuel starts gushing trough the line. You'll loose under 10 ml of fuel if you keep your eye on the line while manually operating the pump.

It's two hippies who turn out to be British, driving a Romanian registered car in Bosnia, which probably gave an opportunity to collect some tips. After all, the "English" have got money, right?

In a good many countries, police officers are relatively poorly paid, so they end up doing business for themselves. That sort of thing becomes widespread, and accepted by society, especially as the superiors turn a blind eye to it. There are bent coppers the world over; it's just bad luck if you happen to cross their path.

I'm fully aware that that kind of thing happens frequently in the Balkan countries, and if they had been driving a UK-registered Range Rover Sport then I would have understood - but nobody in their right mind would expect a 28-year-old Romanian-registered Dacia driving through Bosnia to be piloted by two "moneyed" Brits.

That may be a British perspective, but a Bosnian traffic officer in need of money may have a different mindset.

Indeed, it's a foreign car. Doesn't matter where it's from, the occupants can clearly afford the fuel to drive from wherever the car is based to where it is now, so it's an obvious target. Certainly moreso than a locally-registered car, even one ten years newer.

Does anyone know how/when/where Cats and Dolly are due back to Blighty?

Apparently, they're aiming to turn up at Shitefest. Which is just south of Aberdeen on the 9-10th of June!

I meant more as where they are crossing the water from mainland europe to the UK. I cannot make Shitefest this year, but it would be great to welcome them back to the UK (I am much closer to most UK-Europe ports than to Shitefest)

The scenery is still cracking but mood is down a bit after police tug.

Can't believe they made you give them a tug, money is one thing....

I don't want to reveal all their social media stories here and steal their thunder, but...

Our third stop in two days. Just before we left Bosnia, I got fined for forgetting to put my headlights on... He wanted 30 Euros, but accepted 30 marks, which is about half as much. He even gave me change!

Reading on FB looks like up 3 tugs now

yup, entering Bosnia, leaving Bosnia, and now in Croatia (but apparently this last one was 'free')

Aye. We do seem to attract attention. Second one was fair enough. I'd just jumped behind the wheel, and we were so overjoyed that it actually started that we just set off. He was a very jolly officer though, initially trying to charge me 30 Euros, then charging me 30 Bosniagroats, which are about half as much.

Third one was just a random stop by a Police chap watching for dodginess. Very friendly. Didn't mind when we said the car would not restart.

I got pulled in Croatia, near Zadar in a Clio 1.2 hire car for speeding and not giving way to a car coming across my path on a main road (?!).

The fine changed several times and no reference of it on my ticket, they didn't speak a word of English. I had to borrow the cash from passengers in the car who were all really pleased*

Its par for the course! Don't let it get your spirits down!

It does get me down, because it's not right. It made us not want to spend any time in Bosnia, so more fool Mr Greedy copper. Second one entirely fair enough, though I do wonder where the fines end up...

Zagreb tonight. Have some catching up to do with pics!

We're going to Zagreb in October for Mrs Yoss's birthday so I'd be interested to see any pics you might have.

I have just been looking at a map of Europe. It looks so much bigger somehow this week!
