P6 Appreciation Thread

This thread brought to you by the inimical logic that sees me interested in P6s as a replacement for my 400 should it ever expire.  Because what you want to replace your rebadged 90s Honda with is a technical tour de force, hidden rust and British design.

Current favourites for colour schemes are green exterior with orange cloth interior, grey exterior with red leather interior and scarlet exterior with black interior.  I love the noise of the V8 but prefer the look of the straight six other engined cars.  Conelrad and Junkman's exploits with their cars has cemented my desire to acquire as I feel at least slightly enlightened as to how annoying and haunted they can be in addition to how wondrous lovely they are to look at.

Always fancied one, but since watching them on the tv program last Friday i now really want one. Nice one on car and classic for £1500 i think in Almond, looks lovely.

They are ludicrously affordable too, for what is a 'proper' classic car.  Â£2-3K gets a reasonable starter, spend £4k and you can get a really nice one.  I've never seen one up for more than £6k unless it was an estate or highly modified which seems mad for a car equipped with such style and a V8 motor!

My father had a new N reg 2200TC which was nice enough to drive although a bit pedestrian. Plenty of P6 love here as I appreciate the forward-thinking in the design although nobody called them P6 back then. I still think the dash design on the TC has never been bettered.

I love the noise of the V8 but prefer the look of the straight six cars.

Apologies for the nit-picking but no production P6 was built with a six-cylinder

I think a 'Gaffer' replica would be perfect

Despite me being a die-hard Triumph man I'm embarassed to say I'd probably have a Rover 2000 over the comparable Triumph, despite it's lack of cylinders..

herpaderp.  I always thought they were 6 and 8 but not 4.  Shows what I know!

I have to say, I still have a sneaking longing for a P6B.  I drove one when I was about 22, just down the road and back, a white auto with a Webasto which I would call ideal spec.  It was a very well-worn 1973 example but still impressed.  My neighbour would have still (just about) had his Zircon Blue 2000TC at the time too.  In Cyprus I was slightly involved with two examples, both 2000; one an auto.

Have to admit, VL, you really go to town when valeting....

The only new cars known in my family were my Grandad's sequential brace of Zircon Blue 2000TCs.

He bought the first when he retired in 1967.   My own retirement plan involves a P6, hope I can still afford one then.

I had a multi colour (Almond originally) 3500S.SLP347L I think-this was about 1991 ish.

Bought it with no gearbox-Fat Lewi who had it before me  had blown it up racing someone-found a 4 speed nearby and it went like shit off a shovel. Would wheel spin  in 2nd in the dry.

Wish I kept it. Later bought a SD1 3500 manual-not a patch performance wise on the P6-think the engine was stuffed.

I think I paid £200 for the P6 and £40 for the gearbox.

Found a parts specialist in Yate near Bristol-he had loads of P6's-bought and replaced a few rusty panels-hence the multi colour.

I've had a simmering desire for a P6 for many years now, however I can't afford a good one now and it is one of those cars I suspect is worth spending a few bob on to get a decent one - although they are still ludicrously cheap for what they are.  Absolutely gorgeous looks, Trigger's red one is just stunning and a Rover V8 in deep red would be quite perfect.

I remember there was a right bobby dazzler of an estate fitted with a 3.9 injected v8 and 6 speed supra box for sale a while back. I remember having deep and meaningful days dreams about owning that at the time.

Can you imagine how much these would go for now if they made the 'Ford P6' probably about £25,000

These are excellent classics, look the dogs bits and so so cool.

I would love one.

Junkman ten minutes ago.

They are a beautiful car - having had V 8 SD1's I would have a 3500 in slightly tuned up flava - cam' carb etc.

5 cylinder triple carb what?

Yes but it wasn't a production engine. The rover boffins came up with this 5 cyl version if the 4 pot to give a bit more oomph. They had to stretch the front of the p6 to make it fit. They called it p7. It was rendered obsolete when they got their mits on the v8.

It's surprising that there aren't a plethora of badly design fibreglass body panels for these to turn them into sports cars, especially given the relative ease of stripping them down to the basic skeleton ready for a new suit.

Inboard rear discs, everyone LOVES those.

This one was spotted in VIenna by a friend of mine who runs alltagsklassiker.at:

These two have disappeared by now, I have heard:

And there are many more.

So it may be a fantastic car, but it certainly is not a rare car. It have a huge following, Clubs are taking care of it.
