Cheeky google street view pic. Have a client round the corner from this garage but it was always parked inside.

Think it's a Scammel of some sort?

Yes, 1950s Explorer.

I'll see your Explorer and raise you a (I think) Ural 4320 wrecker. These couple of piss poor stills from a shoddy video were all I could get: it's hiding in the woods right by the A1, a couple of miles north of Seaton Burn on the southbound side, if anybody fancies having a poke about. Fair made my day, I'll say!

Library pic for comparison.

Yeah, I think it is a ZIL.   Though initially it might belong to this hero.....but he lives down South I think.

Great channel to while a couple of hours away on, though!

I have a mate who maintains a ZIL for a local tree surgeon,i will try and find some pictures but it could take a while!

Could well be the ZiL, the Ural guess was just that! I only saw it from behind at the last moment, and I assumed it was a Diamond T like further up the thread, but on seeing it again on the way up, I'm fairly certain it's not one of those. It would need a much better look to be sure.

Pics don't do it justice: it's a sort of faded safety yellow! More anti-camouflage to be honest...

Yo crew

Went to have a look at these two units yesterday.

Gotta be a Daf as the place who does our maintenance runs them as they know them inside out.

I never noticed till I have started looking how many places sell tractor units to export. Yards full of them everywhere and there seems to be good money in it.

My mate down the docks reckons he regularly sees units going out on flat-racks for export that pulled boxes into the port themselves a short while previously.....

Just go down the A180 towards Immingham/Grimsby - there are that many old wagons heading to the docks it's as if they are answering some unheard siren call from Africa and are migrating en masse.

Monster trucks monster trucks

Went for an IMechE tour of Southampton container terminal yesterday. As I imagined it was a pretty intense operation of cranes and trucks everywhere. Sadly it was in the evening so not many photos but the straddle carriers are some serious kit up close:

Saw these in the Dunkerque ferry port the other day - Renault branded Dennis bin lorries. Didn't realise any were actually exported. Something new and interesting among the JCBs and New Holland tractors I often see being trucked onto the continent.

These are Renault Access dustbin lorries. From Wikipedia Francais -

Volodya is a closet gearjammer! He seems to make heavy weather of the manual shift though, definite kangarooing there.

Not sure it's worthy of its own thread, but there's a new show on Spike (or it's on the Channel 5 On Demand service) called Trucking Hell.

It follows Crouch Recovery pulling trucks out of fields and stuff, most of their stuff is quite new but there's just been a tantalising glimpse of a fully liveried, very shiny DAF 3600 wrecker and some sort of Kenworth (or other generic American truck) which hopefully make an appearance.

Edit: only watch if you can put up with the American style "find out later what happens" ENDLESSLY.

The skills on offer are really good, and most of the blokes they're following seem a right laugh. The commentator and flow of the program are tiresome though

This happened last week. I'm a proper lorry driver now.

Would highly recommend John Smithurst for transport training in the east midlands (Nottingham). He's the sort of no-nonsense bloke that would go down well with most guys on here. Does B+E, C and C+E.

I think this sums up why I don't miss HGV driving for a living.

Plod admit that they made a mistake and each pallet was only a tonne each but FFS! Was he planning to drive the wagon upside down???

Who/what the fuck is CMPG?  To be honest I'm surprised he's got any straps around it; most drivers with curtainsiders still seem to just draw the curtains and forget about it.  Especially those doing multi-drop for the pallet networks.  They'd be fucking around for hours at every call if they strapped everything down.  Even when you do try to strap stuff properly you just end up squishing boxes due to the shit way in which most warehouses pack their goods.

Central Motorway Policing Group.

They're the traffic cops that Carl and Daz off Police Interceptors aspire to be.

The driver could have an interesting conversation involving maths and physics to show why two tonnes of mass doesn't equal two tonnes of lateral force.

Essentially the Police want the driver to use three straps for each pallet.

I'm not calling for a return to ropes and sheets (although plenty of old arses are) but there's no way that load would move during pretty much any normal driving.

Look at that.... Ford D Series. Tis a thing of beauty.. been in situ for a very long time given the hedging growing in the back!
