Ford Streetka. Shit or shite?

These things have been catching my eye, they seem to be for sale everywhere, and really cheep. I do like an original Ka, fun wee things..  I know the convertible ones are a bit feminine, but are they as much fun to drive as the original?

Snog marry or avoid? In all my years in the trade, I've never sat in,driven or worked on one...

The StreetKa when introduced had a reputation for being as watertight as a sieve, I believe!

They are great to drive with tons of grip and great handling, the engine is a letdown and it's a Ka so will terminally rot very quickly, peanuts to run and fix, great shite in my book

^^^just needs the wheels & grey bumpers** from a base Ka and a hardtop in grey primer.

***and the lights, wings, bonnet....

A woman at work had one that got more and more rusty until it failed it's mot. She tried to sell it but failed and in the end I got it for £50. We welded it up and took it to Donington for a track day for a laugh. Apart from the mx5 it's the most fun car I have ever done a track day in. An utter hoot to drive. Would I drive one on the road? Sadly not, I consider myself ALMOST immune to stereotypes of who should drive what car but even I would struggle with a streetka as a daily.

As always, the concept looked slightly better...

Once you get to my age, you'll be past caring about bollocks like that :)

Bonus for me in one of these would be it would really annoy my ex when I went to collect our daughter in it.

I wasn't sure if I was imagining things, but I remember Kylie Minogue was heavily involved in the launch promotion of these. A quick Google has confirmed this. Surely that's enough reason to have one? Gold lamé hot pants optional.

The shiter option is a boggo spec 1.3 tintop- once up to speed its like a fuckin gocart..nae need for bodystyling when yer GLFing

if you want a nippy good handling car for not much the clio 172 is a much better option.

I need to did the Burd's one out

It takes a special designer to take the shittiest made, rustiest wankiest car ever and remove the roof.

Must be handy if you met a gang of vicious armed muggers one night though, one mention of owning a StreetKa will see them off, nobody's going to fight someone that brave.

I had a Sportka for nigh on 4 years.

Good fun to drive, surprisingly nippy, handled well, only 1FTP in that time.

Very juicy, small tank, rusty.

I'm a glutton for punishment, and travelled up and down the M3 in mine daily, and this highlighted that this car was not suited to this environment, however on the country lanes it was a treat. Buy carefully at this age, the majority will have issues with rust, also there are parts such as alternators which are specific to the sport/ street Ka which can cause jaw dropping moments, £ 315 to source the part only I seem to remember.

My view if you find a stunner that's been meticulously bathed in rust proofing materials go for it, otherwise, look elsewhere.

Fancy a soft top as the Saab is staying. Hopefully something to take to Italy next year, so aircon is a must, heated seats would be nice for Scotland leather seats are good for Roscoe's drool and also a hardtop. I don't think I could bring myself to own one, but they do seem cheap, tick all the boxes and are built by Pininfarina...

Too many Clio's have been chavved. They caused me some late nights, and bleeding knuckes when I was spannering. Ah'm oot.

I think I'd rather spend a few hundred quid more and get an mx-5

As cars age they slow down due to wear and tear.

Sport ka is the only car ever to buck this trend due to it shedding it's metalwork like eczema.

Do yourself a favour and keep it that way.

Personally speaking, I'll be happy when the last Ka rusts into oblivion.

Most cheap MX-5s are soft, slow, rusty and don't live up to the 'purest driving experience for true enthusiasts' twaddle unless you chuck at least £500 at the suspension.

They can be made brilliant, and like the MGB that inspired it, they're an incredible blank canvas. The 1.6s do absolutely fuck all for me stock, I'm afraid.

I mean, I'm sure they're gob-smackingly quick and nimble compared to most AS approved vehicles but then you drive something proper and wonder what the fuss was all about.

The 1.8's getting there; lose the power steering and they almost resemble the breathless Pistonheads bollocks spouted about them. A decent (i.e. mostly rot free) 1.8 is pushing a grand now, though. You can get them cheaper but they're mostly hot air and rust.

The MGF's the same - although at least the VVC/Trophy 160 can sort-of get out of their own way.

Dunno about the SportKa/StreetKa either. Soz.

Welded too many MX5's to even consider going there, even had to have a good stare at some 4 or 5 year old ones on the MOT ramp. MGF's are ace- won't hear a bad word about them and looking for one constantly. Not so keen on the TF but would. Fancy something different that I've not had before though.. Barchetta,Copen.. dunno. Loved my Alfa GTV but not sure about a Spider. Off for 9 days as of tomorrow so purchase window opens :)

Got totally Pi$$ed off looking for a campervan.. a builders van with a skanky mattress chucked in the back isn't suddenly worth 3 grand.

I haven't driven the 1.8, Dug, but people say the 'S' is the only one to have. If they're even on the same par as the 1.6, I'll be mightily impressed.

Nope. There are sooooo many better alternatives, including the Copen, Capuchino and if you can find one a Honda Beat.

All equally rusty?

Not sure about the Copen but the others love to dissolve.

That street a prototype looks nice, dash mounting of oil filter should make for easy changes.
