Mazda Boingo Friendeeeeeeeee isn't very big, has bed and can come with V6.

A bit joyless though. Back to Passion Wagons?

Ride quality is not going to be much good on any of these though is it? I am obsessed with ride at the moment; the Insight is infuriating on bumpy roads, especially two-up when it can feel dangerous as well as painfull. The old Legacy is a magic carpet in comparison but it isn't in the Ambassador / BX / Renault 20 class.

Aye, the Insight was quite depressing. When I drove yours, I swiftly realised there was no chance I would ever own one. The S-MX is meant to be quite good for ride apparently. The idea of spending a four-figure sum on a car is a concept I still find quite scary though. £800 sounds much less scary.

I can't believe I've been looking for a car for four days and haven't bought one yet. What is the world coming to?! The problem is, the different priorities are bubbling over like lumps of gristle in a really awful soup. One minute, V6ness is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, then it's a rear wiper. Or two. Then I want super, super comfort, then I want something small and nimble. I am disappointed about the S-MX though, so maybe that is telling. Mind you, I had managed to talk Mrs DW into the idea, even though she'd been telling me that really, I don't need another car as we have several. I think that really does mean that bland isn't going to cut it. Is a Honda Accord Coupe bland? I fear it is. I like the arse, but the face isn't doing it for me as much.

I've no idea what I'm on about.

Why would someone want to import a shittyy Mk1 Zafira with a Subaru badge, unless it had a banzai turbot flat 4 in?

Oh, GM. Some of their badge engineering was baffling.

Buy something completely Radio Rentals and not japanese, and paint it in a flower power stylee, something like a Merc 123 diesel :P

I have this problem all the time . Okay I really want a cortina so I sell my car and instantly buy a Mercedes s350. I want a boxster or an z4 so buy a fiat panda. 9 times out of 10 I end up thinking damn, I wish I 'd held out and bought the car I was after originally .

I say hold out for a nice early ls400 or better a Toyota celsior.

Finally managed to get hold of the seller of the purple Accord V6 coupe. No email, never seems to answer the bloody phone. Finally resorted to text message, in which he revealed the timing belt was last changed at 60,000 miles. It now has 122,000 on the clock. V6 timing belt interval seems to vary between 90k and 105k depending on who you speak to. So, worth a punt?

90k or 7 years i think, I'll dig out my workshop manual in a bit and confirm it.

My coupes belt was changed at 70k in 2007 so I'm well overdue as well, bear in mind the valve clearances will need checking/adjusting after 120k as well.

I suppose it depends on how much you pay for it, I'd think a shagged gearbox will kill off most before a 2nd belt is needed.

Aye, that was the other advice from a chap who ones one - gearbox flush. This is fast turning into a whole heap of can't be arsed.

Wobbler, what about one of those 3.0 v6 duratec Jag S types? I had a leggy one that was absolutely miserable, because it was shagged and had whiplash inducing driveline shunt. It still had appeal. Went through rear tyres at a terrific rate.

Within your price range, correct cylinders, sort of (shiteist) classic Jag...

A bit too leftfield?

Failing that, a new contender enters the fray...

V6 MX6!

S-Type is out. Neighbour had one and sold it because the seats were so shit.

That MX-6 is a bloody good find though. They seem to be rapidly creeping up in value. Two-number reg plate too. Attractive.

I had completely forgotten they were a v6. Could be good mag fodder...

Wiki says:

It was mechanically identical to the Mazda 626 and subsequently the Ford Probe

Seem to be proper curiosities. The euro spec ones had four wheel steering.

Edit:

Another in resale silver in the West Mids

No double wiper, but double happiness.

Intriguing, but silver can GTF. I absolutely hate silver cars.

My personal land speed record was set in an MX6 - A+++++++Recommended, would buy again

I'm fairly sure I'll own a Ford Probe one day.

Actually, I've changed my mind.

Posted

Mx6 are an epic car, they were rare when current and even more so now. Few people know what one is anymore, but they remember the probe.

I've got really distracted by MX6s now. They seem to be one of those weird motoring deadends which never took off because the market changed while they were being made. Co-conceived by Mazda and Ford to appeal to an american market to replace the mustang?! Japanese engineering, american taste. Outsold by the MX5.

All aluminium engine and gearbox.

Jalopnik have this article on them with interesting stuff.

Nice engine note too:

Apparently MX3 1.8 V6s were a thing too. Definitely some potent Sake in the Mazda factory circa 1990.

Another car to add to the list of stuff for the future.

EDIT.

Found a MX3 1.8 V6. In budget.

It's a 60 degree 24v DOHC 1.8 v6 with a 7000 rpm redline.

Madness.

Sorry Ian. I'll get back in my box now.

I had an MX3 with a 1.8 V6.  Wasn't any quicker than any other hot hatch and drank pez like it was going out of fashion, but did sound good.  Handling was great fun too, but it was cramped and the ride was dreadful.

Posted

My wife had two Galants, a 2.0 and a 2.5 V6. Epic cars. A cut or two above the other Japanese contenders.

Posted

Aye. I have driven an MX-3 and it didn't win me over. MX-6 is a different matter entirely.

Might be cheaper to glue the front end of a Fiat Cinquecento onto a Matiz yourself.
