Some sellers wanting over £1200 for one. ROFLCOPTER

Trouble was they weren't particularly cheap when new, hence all the criticism when they came out.

True dat.

Instead of pricing it to make an OK profit and sell loads, they went ahead and priced it at just below what people were paying for similarly sized Japanese cars, which was nuts due to the massive difference in build quality, experience and value. Essentially that's like Poundland saying "Well our boxes of chocolates look a lot like Dairy Milk, so let's charge 5p less than they do".

Indian list price of the Indica was less than £4k equivalent, what Rover thought they were doing charging £6500 for the same thing (given there's only a basic amount of alterations for the UK market, it's not like they were LHD or owt) when they're buying them in bulk is anyone guess.

Still, it's on the bucket list. Just to see how bad bad can be.

One might think that the owners were a bit incompetent/inexperienced in running a vehicle manufacturing business.

If my wife ever starts driving again the town car shortlist will be Seicento, Cuore/Kelisa & Nippa (and maybe Honda Logo, because no-one seems to love them).

Somehow this thread has managed to get the City Rover on the list!

I think you would probably need to buy 2 working cars, and completely strip one for spares these days, as I bet parts now are a total PITA, it was bad enough when they were current

The best method for keeping your shite mobile on a tight budget.

This is cheap at the moment

Can't be too dreadful as over 5000 still exist.

And I have one the same colour that will be available for parts soon.

Wanting, and getting are 2 different things, didn't Rover pay Tata less than £3k each or summat daft for em? Hindsight being great, but if they'd tried to punt em new for under £5k, they'd have probably had queues round the block of gifffers with cheque books in hand

Indeed. And I'm not sure why Tata, don't open some dealerships inside an Aldi, and sell them for £4000.

Probably they are making enough on selling them in India and elsewhere and don't need the bother.

Don't these have a TU engine in like that in a Peugeot 106 etc? I want to put a 106 GTI engine in one for the absolute pinnacle in surprising people

I don't think they'd dare open any branches near Port Talbot at the moment, and it's a very, very old Peugeot engine I believe

Yeah I've just searched for pictures of the engine and I've got absolutely no bloody clue what it's based on.

Im wondering if its some Douvrin concoction as used in the old Mk1 Renner 5/Renner 18 etc and turned sideways?

Posted

Internet Folklore suggests it was developed from an old diesel engine of the same 1405cc capacity, which seems a really arse way of making a petrol engine. I can't find anything else of the same capacity though, even the 1.4D originally used in the AX was a different capacity, different layout etc. Can't think of any other small capacity diesel engines.

Posted

Not sure what it's based on, Wiki says it's their own engine based on an engine they previously used in 4x4s.

It looks like they use the same block for both diesel and pez so LP might not be far off with it being a heavily redeveloped Indenor.

It's apparently a rebored version of their 483DL which is a 2 litre dizzler.

Aye, it's not related to any modern PSA engines and only very loosely related to a very old diesel engine.

I'm sure "based on a Peugeot engine" was Mythbusted on Macdroitwich but it's all gone so I can't check.

'Cityrover Peugeot engine' is one of the first suggestions that come up when I type Cityrover into Google, so others must have spent idle moments pondering the same question. Either that or it's been bumped up in the last 24 hours by hoards of Autoshiters desperate to find a definitive answer.

Someone on here who knows their Peugeot engines (circa 1930-1980) should take a Cityrover engine apart and help solve the mystery. We deserve to know.

According to a book I'm reading about Tata's ownership of JaguarLandRover, MGR signed a deal to take 100,000 City Rovers over 5 years. If less than 10,000 made it to the UK, there must be a load of CR bits dumped somewhere in India.....

There's one on eBay in Liverpool for £110, no reserve. It's out of test though, so you might need reinforced hi-tensile steel bollocks.

Mystery solved, it's not a Peugeot engine, it's one very loosely related to an engine that might only be inspired by an Indenor diesel and has its own Tata-designed OHC head, I don't know if Tata made Indenors under license or not but according to French wiki, Mahindra used Indenor diesels - they certainly exist in India.

It's as much a Peugeot engine as the City Rover is a Rover.

It does look a lot smaller than any indenor motor too

LOL that car is like the illegitimate son at a family gathering. In attendance but not quite part of things...

If that was 2010, me and Rhyds of Macdroitwich went and parked near it later on.

An MG ZR or Rover 25 is probably a better bet, they were a great drive in their latter days.

My Metro GTa (prior to owning it) was possibly somewhere in that photo too.

So the general consensus is that the CityRovers too shite for Autoshite, thereby making it the most Autoshite car choice. However I think that my Streetwise may be getting a Rover 45 for company if things go to plan.
