Randy Panda Bought. The worst best car in the world (with the worst wheels in the world)

Having 2 hopeless old croc's that are constantly broken are all well and good but I've been on the look out for something newer and "fun" what ever that means for the last few months. Something that's I can take to knock hill for a track day but isn't going to cost a fortune to run. Originally I was going to spluff a few grand on something but I have the fear that what ever I buy will shit itself and I'll lose all my money.

I was casually looking at the listings for the local shite auction in Dalry at lunchtime and among the usual taxi rank rejects and rattling Zafiras they seemed to be putting though a load of trade in's from Eastern Western group. One in particular caught my attention.

I came home and eat a pie to focus my mind then headed up the auctions and put the my deposit down. I went through to the hall and hmm, it was a bitter rougher than I hoped for and it had space saver on one wheel.

I should of course have walked away at this point but no I got a cup of tea and waited for the man to come around and start up. Sounds okay other than a the exhaust sounds, erm sporty (has a hole in it). No lights on the dash or any other obvious faults other than looking like it had been Stevie Wonder's daily driver.

Gets more tea, sits and waits for it to come onto the block.

someone - 600 -  me 700

someone - 800 -  oh fuck me.........Nine huuundredd!

Bang goes the hammer. Oh fuck,  Provisional, I'll make a call say the auctioneer.  I kind start half hoping that they're going to knock it back and I've got a get out of jail free card as the inevitable buyers regret starts setting in.

The auctioneer rings and I hear him not get through and leave a message. I start thinking, maybe just maybe I've got out of this as buyer regret turns to cold sweat. He comes up and says "I can't get through to them but don't worry ve'll sell it for that".

Oh fuck.

It is of course a Randy Panda 100HP. I've always wanted one and was angling to get one for MrsC but the boot's too small and decent ones are out of budget.

It's had more hits than Gary Barlow. The v5 indicates the owner lived in central Edinburgh and was obviously a practitioner of a particularly violent defensive drivers technique. It has a big dent in the passenger door.

Scuffs and dents all over.

But nowt a 10b tub of isopan and some pound shop gloss black paint won't make look better.

Soz for the pics (fixed now I hope)

The wheels are horrible, horrible fox alloys. Who knows why as I really like the originals. Hopefully I can find some, what ever these will be getting binned!

That is horrible, in a strangely alluring kind of way. Decent little steer when sorted too.

Well done!

Interior isn't too bad other than the standard sweaty ball seats.

It has an mot to June although I recon it's going to take a few hundred quid to coax it through another one. The sticker on the window says "part service history" This is true.  It was regularly serviced up until 2009.

I guess it probably needs a timing belt and I've a feeling I'm going to be getting into the "could have bought a decent one territory" by the time it's finished.

I also have to figure out how to get it. I might see if I can sneak Monday morning off and get Mrs C to drop me off.

Be wary of that Blaupunkt stereo- they have a nice habit of randomly turning themselves on and draining the battery, especially if there's a cd left in the player... It's a common fault, but I'm not sure if they cured it on there later models.

The only other thing I can remember from the missus's 04 plate was the gearbox mount shearing it's bolt and dropping out of the car. It should have a later type mount, but it bolts under the battery vertically and screws down into the gearbox. ( I think they share mountings across the range, if not ignore me!)

fuck sake.

you're no allowed to wilsons without a carer from now on in

900 quid eh? Not bad, 07 plate is BRAND NEW so looks like a barg to me.

I'd definitely choose this over 9 Lagunas anyway.

My Dad is a serial car changer, every year or so he'd get bored and change.

I recommended a 100HP to him.

He's had it two years and absolutely bloody loves it.

Top purchase, I'll be keeping an eye out for when they hit sub-£1k.

Correct rimz_yo and that'll look a thousand times better. Not bad for £900!

Posted

I really like these and thought about getting one myself but they are still a little rich for me and my sub £1000 targets, I'll be interested in see how you get on with it, and seeing those alloys die a painfull death.

Posted

That has to be a bargain for a 100HP.

I'm in a 1.1 with moon mileage for £500 by the time it has its second at least engine fitted

Posted

YEAH! :-D

These things still make good money- good luck with the wheels though, they are expensive!

Like Dave Q says, that's brand new! You're pretty harsh on the description but it looks gr9 in the pics. Good effort.

Like.

I am looking at a small car to replace the Leon. So far it's a choice between one of these for practicality or a Renaultsport Clio for the Lolz. Although I have heard these get a wiggle on quite nicely.

Always enjoy seeing a little Fiat getting some love though, looking forward to seeing it's gradual improvement programme'

The pictures flatter it the front especially is pretty duffed up.

there's someone in Falkirk selling 4 fiat 500 steels with good tyres for 85 quid. I may just get those as an interim solution until I can find something better.

Mot history points to it needing brakes and maybe some shocks . Also noticed a mark on the screen, which looks like a fail but may polish out. They seem to sell for 2-3 grand still. This 'll never be a great one but hopefully I can get some fun out it.

Could be a good candidate for that firm in Glasgow that reckon they can do a full respray for £400.... get it painted some stupid colour after it has a gallon of filler on it

I reckon that'd look NEET on some wide steel wheels - perhaps something from this list?

Posted

Nicely bought. Will be interested to see how you get on with this after my recent failed attempt to buy one - for 4x the cost of yours so perhaps its a good thing it fell through!

Posted

I wanted to go and get this tonight (the auction yard shuts at 6). But Mrs C through her toys out the pram when I suggested a lift to go and get it as it's her "night off".

I'll just need to wait until Monday now. Baaa.

Sounds like a good deal if it's mechanically sound, assuming that the auction fees don't add much on top.

Friend of mine had one and raved about it. The original wheels are apparently quite prone to buckling which might be why yours has had those questionable aftermarket ones fitted.

Always liked these but they normally go for good money. Looking forward to hearing how you get on with it.

There is a black 5 door Panda in scb, not sure if the standard panda doors would fit?

Posted

It looks like 145 wheels will fit too. There's a couple of sets on ebay but they're frigging miles away and none of them look like they want to ship.

I was reading some stuff on facebook about these guys. I think when you pay them for a respray you get a very complete job i.e. they paint the windows, wheels, doorhandles and head lamps.

I recon I'll knock the dents out as best I can then wob up the rest and rattle can it black. I don't need it to look perfect. It could be proved immediately 876% by changing the wheels.

I really wish I could get it tonight :(

You've not paid much more than CAP Below for it - if you were able to sort the body out to a reasonable standard you could quite easily make a few quid on it when you're bored of it

Your right, heard the just scotch brite the cars rough masking and then one hit and out the door. Can expect much for £400 must cost a good bit for the paint.

Absolutely love these things. Great little steer.
