Cortina GL - now home with bits missing

I am absolutely winning at this fleet reduction lark. To succeed, I need to have all internet access removed from me. And not allowed to go out and find tat on the side of the road. And no access to money. Ever.

It started with a speculative online search for 2 keywords I've often searched over the past 10 years or so. I found 3 'possibles' and obviously hit up the cheapest option which actually looked the better option.

I messaged the seller one evening last week however I didn't receive a response. Eventually, by Friday I had a phone number so made the call and sorted it all out. An offer was made and accepted and a deposit sent.

Picking it up was a problem due to it being in that their Scotland and work being hectic. Many thanks to th 4 lads who each offered to help, particularly 320_touring for getting a route sorted and everything. I owe you one.

Work commitments changed last night so I'm in bonny Scotland later today. The plan:

- Drive the new modern daily to our work base in County Durham, pretend to do work whilst dreaming of adventures in new 1970's shed

- get picked up by colleague at lunchtime, head to Berwick, pretend to do some more work

- Scoot up to Falkirk after work, collect car and head off to digs in Carlisle

- Use new motor for tomorrow's commute into Dumfries and then back home

- Promise myself this is the final* collection for 2016

I'm actually really excited for this one - it's probably the collection I'm going to enjoy the most since I picked up my silver E23 last April. The cars fresh out of the body shop so I'm expecting it to be spot on and having tracked down the previous owner on the book of faces, I'm happy with what I've been told about the oily bits.

It's grim up north this morning. Thank god for modern with heated front and rear screens. The day will get more interesting than this blob I assure you

If this is the Toledo that's obviously* reserved* for me*, then I'll be most sad.

Good luck, sure everything will be fine!

Shame your A1 side or you could have popped in for a brew or two,

And as for last purchase haha I've been saying that for over 20years now.

Here's a snippet of the car - I thought it was lime green!

There's a pint in it for anybody who can guess what it is - those who know what it is are obviously exempt!

This should excuse the boredom of waiting a few hours whilst I work for a decent* update.

I'm betting it's the the 1.6L Mk4 that's been on the ebay thread and is up in mid Scotchland with a recent paint job..

I guess that one was too easy eh!

Skizzer/cort16 - it's a GL actually - we do have a touch more class here ;)

The Mk4s are infinitely more "Minder" than the final ones.  Get that photographed on a bombsite car sales pitch with an Instagram filter and you'll be away.

Cor, that looks ace! You do know how to pick 'em.

Unreserved apologies for lumping you in with the L owning classes :-) In my defence, I thought GL got you rubbing strips rather than pinstripes.

Fuck I was going to say GL as well. I did have some dirty thoughts about that one myself but the blow over put me off given what the blow over on mine was hiding. Bring a magnet (i'm sure it'll be fine)!!

Yes I do have similar concerns and will be checking things out. The MOT history States heavy corrosion on both front wings which the eBay ad states have since been replaced but, being suspicious I will be inspecting them thoroughly.

Despite the fact I probably won't get there until around 9pm I won't be adverse to telling him to get knotted if it's a shed. Then il be finding a cheap B&B to bunk up in!

Is was looking at that Tina too and the paint kind of put me of a bit, but I always preferred the mk5s for some reason.

It was an easy quiz question, since the very next photo in your photobucket was a picture of the entire car... ;-)

Previous owner has confirmed the bodywork was fairly okay other than the knackered wings (now replaced), so fingers crossed she should be okay.

I'm in falkirk, if you need a lift from the station to the sellers house I'm happy to help

Posted

Cheers - I'm sorted for a lift to the car but I might need help getting back to the station if it's a dog - the seller probably wouldn't be so helpful by that point!

I'm sure you already know but get your hand up behind the front wheels and give the drip tray, inner wing and a-piller a good poke. All Cortina's rot here. I went to see one with a full mot a few years ago and when I did this it was like grabbing hold of a bag of toffee.

Looks a cracker-shame I dinnae git to play:(

bet it would have diffed up lovverly ;)BRWAAAAAAP

Put your hands inside the front arches.

If you can feel the wiper motor run like fuck.

Playing with E23 BMWs I'm more than used to cars rotting from the inside out and have knocked many a car back on that basis, this Cortina won't be any different!

- Promise myself this is the final* collection for March 2016

FTFY, although that'll still require 24 days of abstinence!

Sounds like you've done your homework so good luck John, hope it all turns out fine.

Today is quite obviously dragging. Telephone interview for a new job at 3.30 too, then I can gtf out of here I reckon seeing as I'm away from home nearly all week and working Saturday too.

This Cortina better be worth it.

I've got one you can buy. Some assembly required.
