Do you need any bits for a Mk1 still? A guy near mine is breaking one.

Whip Street Motors in Ipswich. Be quick though, it looks like it’ll be a cube by the weekend. 01473 832878.

Very possibly, but not before Foxhall or Mildenhall open up again. Good bunch of lads, dealt with them a few times.

Verona?

I quite liked the snazzy trim you got in the Verona. And the Scorpio wheel trims. And the soft touch badge. And the complimentary standard a/c. The paint scheme in green or purple was a thumping added bonus.

Nice, thanks. Can't argue with that review really, points still stand 25 years on.

I remember that group road test. It included the 'new' Peugeot 406. They described the Toyota Carina E as the ideal bank robber's car because few witnesses would able to remember it.

  • egg changed the title to '93 Mondy thread - How Many Left update

As mentioned before, a chap on Facebook does an annual How Many Left analysis. Although the data has holes, it is at least consistent with itself from year to year.

Update for 2020 data.

  • Taxed MK1's have fallen to 811 from 1006 last year.
  • SORN'd have remained consistent at about 3300. So a large proportion of remaining cars are not on the road for one reason or another.
  • In 2016 (first year his review was done) total MK1s were 6,251 and it is now 4,135. In 1996 there were 393,000 Mondeos.
  • My 'special interest' 1993 cars there are 607 left (remember that includes L reg too). Only 129 of these are taxed.
  • Some numbers are vanishingly small - there are 5 taxed diesel 1993 Mondeos left. Maybe 11 1993 taxed base models. Possibly 7 taxed 4x4 models in total.

Yeah I think that one is on the list. I think the K plate I posted is a previously unknown one as can't find reference to it on here

@Eyersey1234thanks chap, but yep, have that one owned by a Mr Moore. I believe him and his son both have one. There's got to be another 100+ to find, but needles and haystacks and all that. Must be a few locked away in garages for years with owners who bought them as their 'retirement present'.

  • egg changed the title to '93 Mondy thread - rear washer seal replacement

Yeah, well since March this car has really been neglected, just the way life goes sometimes. Anyway, #job1 for 2021....new rear washer seal.

I happened on the OEM part on eBay for £2.40 posted, arrived next day (today)

IMG_20210610_140122.thumb.jpg.7b697fe4b838425b967e732ba84dda6c.jpg

the old one was extremely deteriorated

IMG_20210610_140139.thumb.jpg.ed287046fe418c79a41923016912752e.jpg

You have to pull off this plastic piece to access the other side, this is dangerous - crispy 28 year old clipped on plastic.

IMG_20210610_140326.thumb.jpg.1129bf0e1e5043d7962c33dd0f1c2a67.jpg

No problems, reveals the connector, jump in the boot to remove...

IMG_20210610_140331.thumb.jpg.bcce6eebce2db50648d021e44d1e8760.jpg

Yes the old one was dead....

IMG_20210610_140540.thumb.jpg.7e9bb8e5d509a8870869db2d2bdb5c8f.jpg

Anyway, job's a good'un all back together, no leaks so far...despite being a slightly tigher fit as you can probably see, so connector pipe doesn't push in quite as far.

No problem, I didn't know if you knew about that one or not. I'll keep an eye out for any other K plate Mondys.

Steve Saxty has published this on his Facebook page - all credit to him - I need to get his book secret Fords:

Quote

I just started researching the CDW27 Mondeo this week for "Secret Fords" Vol Two. Here's a story I didn't know about the Contour, the North American version was designed late in the day. Here's the first Mondeo (bottom) a full-sized fibreglass model – the Contour (top) had a modified lower rear window and roof top look sleeker.  I drove many of these in the US but never realized why Americans shunned it because of rear headroom – I'd wrongly assumed it was the same as the European car!

His Capri book is excellent.  I've asked my other half to get me the Secret Fords book for my birthday next month.

A month later, another rubber part replacement #job2. I bought this OEM NOS boot seal last year...

IMG_20210706_113429.thumb.jpg.e750fea90896d57d495d39d78878770c.jpg

The old one came off easily, and obviously originally it was glued on in some way. However, I had no intention of gluing the new one.

IMG_20210706_113830.thumb.jpg.d73c54f3e7c661e844848446bad95593.jpg

A few blebs needed Vactan

IMG_20210706_114710.thumb.jpg.7ab06a083b7eaff086ac204a0e372afb.jpg

Pushed the new seal on as best I could, obviously not quite well enough

IMG_20210706_121445.thumb.jpg.8d831b84a591087b0b11dc9a02d9906d.jpg

But since the lockdown energy levels are low, even though I didn't knowingly have Covid, and I wasn't going to start again, so trimmed it and inevitably took a little too much off, but it's ok.

IMG_20210706_123109.thumb.jpg.67d15602f8f3d464ab4f705ac88fb2b5.jpg

I think it's overall a positive result, the new rubber looks....err...more proud ooh err missus, and the boot seems to shut with a nice little thud. Time will tell if it makes winter fogging up any better and water ingress, but it's worth a go. Will be careful when I load up for the tip now!

IMG_20210706_123117.thumb.jpg.e92e3e82d5d0f9cf8dde860a1a3295a2.jpg

MOT booked for later in the month.

  • egg changed the title to '93 Mondy thread - at the clay bar

#job3 Since I've had the car, it has been peppered with these little orange marks (examples highlighted), either some deeply embedded tree sap or similar, or possibly a spray can knocked over in a garage or something.

InkedIMG_20210715_112003_LI.thumb.jpg.a957531dcdfcca87f60102d9b639f9b9.jpg

I bought this Autobright fine clay bar kit from eBay, and it has been pretty effective at removing them. Much more to do though, so file this as ongoing.

First time I have ever used one, and it's easy enough as long as you keep it wet wet wet.

Sorry to hear!

I'm continuing on cosmetics, started using Polytrol on the side strips. I have had good results with that product on other external plastics around the house and cars. Hand painted so might suffer from slight giffer 'paint' runs.
