Remember I painted this NOS grille last year?

Well, now the nice weather is here, time to put it on. But I didn't like the original rusty screws. So I got some new OEM ones from a Ford dealer because I'm not* a rivet counter

Doing this got me going cod-philosophical

One of the reasons I drive older cars is because fighting against the dying of the light, trying to slow down entropy, and because extending objects usefulness beyond their designed lifespan gives me actual pleasure. 99% of the 93-96 Mondeos are bean cans. Only 0.25% are actually taxed and on the road. So all that human energy and world resources have moved on. For me, it's a reason to be alive, particularly as I'm aware I'm beginning to decay myself. So that's why I've been painting and fitting a new grille to my 27 year old Mondeo. And you thought it was just to get me out of the house..

One Chodtastic Mondeo you have there @egg, as I've said before it's one of my favourite cars on Autoshite. New grill looks really nice.

Want to replace the front number plate screws, they are 5mm diameter self tappers, I have millions of 4mm of course! And they won't hold.

Pop them in a vat of Coca-Cola overnight, then clean with scotchpad and repaint maybe?

EDIT: when I worked for a Ford dealers years ago, I had the job of fitting the new number plates. IIRC, the MD ordered a massive box of screws from Ford so it may be worth seeing if they sell them?

Posted

Normally yes, but the thread has gone completely on one of 'em

Homebase is open today, I'll pop round and get something suitable.

Now sorted with new screws and caps that don't quite fit because of the round head screw. Still the old AS mantra, better than it was.

And yes, I do actually have a new plate still to fit. This was prep.

Haha, glad you like it - I was worried it would come across as mickey taking, which it wasn't, I actually think it's a lovely bit of writing. Interestingly when I typed in blue mk1 Mondeo into google this picture was I think the 5th to come up!

A article on the BTCC Mondeo from December 1993, in cars and car conversions magazine. Kindly provided by @Christine

The only other MK1 Mondeo without a sunroof (apart from the base). They amazingly got the weight down to 950kg.

And at an international event at Monza

Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. I really got into BTCC at this time, I think they used to show it on Grandstand on Saturday afternoons.

It may have been 1992 that I first started watching it; IIRC the privateers often had bmw e30s still.

Definitely one of my favourite Autoshite cars.

I had the Scalextric of that BTCC Mondeo as a lad. and it was always my preferred choice over the E36. Good times.

Updating wall pictures and won the picture off ebay, and had frame and mount with another picture I lost interest in.. and seeing ur mk1 and btcc stuff I thought I'd show you

1994.  Peak BTCC for me. I wish I still had my red Alfa 155 :)

some (semi) interesting trivia, that Renault 19 in the picture is driven by the dad of Red Bull F1 driver Alex Albon

There are two touring car replicas I'm aware of. The blue one (Isis blue) started off as a base...

Yeah, was sad to see the damage to the blue one, I think he's put 10 grand into that car!

i ended up spannering well labouring to alvin powell one night at knockhill on his prodrive mondeo, clutch had gone so gearbox out job. to think in club racing these guys are basically motorhome and trailer, far cry from the million quid per car per year ford paid prodrive

I'm biased being a Mk1 owner, but this is one of my favourite cars. It brings me a great level of comfort knowing that a K Plate BASE in arguably the best colour is in safe hands!

Matt raced a ex wsr built car, replica is the red one above. He is still racing touring cars for his own team in a honda civic

Posted

Wow I didn't know Mat Neal was still at it. He must have seen it all by now.
