Draining fuel tank-best way?

Recommended Posts

I bought another C70 for parts yesterday,it does run but the clutch has completely had it.However, when I started it up,I noticed that the fuel gauge reads half full.I'm a bit reluctant to waste £40,so was wondering the easiest way to drain the fuel without making too much mess?

When a friend took it out my Vectra he disconnected fuel line from injection rail, connected a piece of hose to a inline fuel pump from a cavalier and the out hose into a petrol can. Seemed to do the trick

Plastic tank I assume? At the breakers they usually have the fork lift hold it in the air then a quick upswing with a pick axe at its lowest point.

Connect a pipe onto the outlet and bridge the fuel pump? Best to bridge it well away from the pump - I.e. find the relay under the bonnet and bridge that. Sparks and fuel vapours aren't a good mix.

Yep, hot wire the pump is the best bet, it'll take a while but safest all round.

Why not take the return line off the fuel rail, put a pipe from the rail to your containers, run the engine whilst filling your containers, that's what I do

If you are lucky, you may find that the fuel tank has a drain plug, or you may be able to gain access to the tank by unscrewing the sender unit.

I recently used the second method on a Mk1 Punto. It was a PITA putting it back together, so I would only recommend it as a last resort.

Siphon it out. But don't risk a gob ful of pez, simply shove two tubes down the filler neck, lead one into your barrel or whatever, and blow down the other one. Seal roughly around the pair in the filler neck with a wet rag. You should be able to briefly pressurise the tank enough with your lungs to get the pez flowing out of the other pipe into the barrel. I have done this loads of times and its very satisfying to not end up with a mouthful of BS EN228

TBH if you have ever drank Super Skol - or similar, syphon it out - tastes about the same :-)

Cos it tastes crap compared to BS4040.

Jack up and drill/screw a hole in the tank at it's lowest point and catch it with two cans and a funnel, saves fucking about with relays and pumps with sparkyness going on

If its going for scrap just put a hole in the tank.

I once drained a mk1 fiesta tank by hammering a nail into the bottom of the metal tank and draining it into a large bowl.

Looking back, it probably wasn't very clever, but it did work.

If your tank is plastic then just put a hole in it with something and let it drain out into a container of some description, its pretty easy and you should capture it all, though £40 of pez is what, 38 litres? make sure you have a big catch container!

A couple of years back one of the local dick heads was going into a haulage yard and sticking an axe through the bottom of truck tanks and again in the top as a breather, then he was filling a basin and pouring it into 20lt Gerry cans until he filled the four he could carry,

I prefer the two pipe syphon way though,

If you do the pump method, can you pump it straight into another car? Then you won't need a massive container.

Have a search under your couch cushions and see if you can find £3.50

That's the huge price of a Syphon pump from most hardware shops or maybe double that from Halfords,

I wish I had known this before. I have ended up with a gob full of fourstar on more than one occasion.
