Its a funny shade of ........ errrr....... red? Brown? Both?

I saved this, from a guy that has loads of poxhalls and a mondeo (a man after my own heart). 2.0 GL model complete with shonkey tyres, groovy poo brown interior and speed peal on the roof and boot.

I did question my sanity over buying it, but the answer was negotiable. So I am going to do any work it needs for MOT and sell it on, so someone else can bask in its delightful hopefulness.

Not like I needed another one really.......

So far I have managed to kill the battery by jump starting the other one off it. Fantastic start! The auto choke croaked it so i need to fix or replace.

Onwards and sideways!!

Or you could add to the one I started for you ;-) it's got those collection pictures in that photofuckit was messing about at showing us

(Un) Interesting fact...

When I opened up the thread I saw this photo:

The Red Peugeot 206 BJ51 TFO, (which probably had nothing to do with you or the collection) used to belong to a mate of mine who lived around the corner from where I lived in Birmingham:

Brilliant Carlton, nice to see a pov-spec one being saved. You can never have too many of one make/model  ;-)

Wow! I thought that CD had just got Opel wheel centres, but it's an actual Rokord , in 1985, what's the story? Is it Irish?

When new I preferred 2.2i Carltons to Senators - I'm sure they were faster. Although I'm partial to any Carlton of that era, I had a red 1800L on a C plate as a company car and even with NotManyBHP it spent more time going sideways than forwards.

Used to be Opels sold in the UK as well as Vauxhalls.  Can't remember when they stopped, but someone else will?

Was very early 80s when they pulled the plug on Opel UK baring the Monza & Manta, I can remember the odd Ascona badged mk2 Cav

I don't think the post 82 facelift mk1 Carlton was sold as an Opel in the UK , certainly by 85 I think it was only Mantas and Senator /Monza that got the Blitz badge.

Vauxhall are badged Opel in Eire. Could've been from there, you used to see the occasional Opel Kadett years ago.

Well the V5 says its been registered/used overseas. Which leads me down two paths. Southern Ireland or Ex british forces in Germany. Northern ireland would have had a different number but still Opel. Either its been ordered in Germany by a british serviceman (entirely possible to order RHD cars but they just get registered at a local dealer) or its come over from southern ireland. Id love to know the history myself.

Northern Ireland would be Vauxhall rather than Opel surely as its still part of the UK, going by the fact they're sold as Vauxhalls in Norn Irn even now?

My auntie Millie in Dublin had an Opel Corsa when we knew them as Vauxhall Nova.  Doesn't make any difference to anything but I thought I'd mention it!

Due to foreseen weather failures I havent had much time set aside for this turd. The tyres are all shit. And they arent even the right size. 175 80 14. SO ive bought some very good 195 70 14s for the back so far. Sorry pictures crap, so is the weather and light :(

Oh and I moved it to the other side of the drive so I can get it up on ramps to weld the exhaust.

Then I decided to have a poke at the o/s/r sill at the back. Spotted a crack when I bought it but.............

It don't look too bad, weldy fun time

You come teach, oh merciful master stepford.

Might have a go at doing it. Dont want this one to cost a fortune to get back on the road!

Those 175/14 s are the right tyres , you've been spoiled by the CDi and its fancy alloys and low profiles.

Interesting to see Vauxhall were so penny pinching they downgraded from HR to SR 175's on 2.0 Autos, because they were slower.

Thats an interesting fact! The 175s make the carlton look pathetic and "whimp like". The Rekord has the 195s and looks soooooo much better for them. I do have a full set of manta ronal black and silver alloys that would look good on it, but would also need the bigger tyres. Still havent made up my mind lol.

My word that is a handsome old beast especially on that russet terracotta type colour!

Well bought! Good luck with the crumbly bits!!

Here, have some awfull scans of a 35mm photo taken in 1989! Russet brown AND a CD! My dad traded his 2.3GL (DBU16Y) Granada for it, I remember the back seats were far better in the Carlton and it had a really fancy Phillips LCD hifi. Only lasted a year and the old man made a colossal profit on it trading to a year old Astra CD in 1990. I remember the DWT part of the reg, might have been 589 or something, will need to ask the old man. The yellow pop plus was just 3 years old and a new addition too.

And here with the car it replaced in the background! Bonus beige Fiesta popular shot too - traded for the yellow one above!

I am so glad you said that. I was the "proud" owner of a Volvo 240, same year, and pretty much the same colour. I always insisted it was red, but her indoors (at the time) used to say it was brown to annoy me.

Great shite by the way.

Car tyres?! You're doing it all wrong, get some 8 ply van tyres like I've got on the Commodore!
