'XJ' Jeep Cherokee - shit or shite?

What's wrong with the Terrano 2.7 TDI? I think it's just like the earlier TD engine but with electronic diesel control and an intercooler. I'd prefer a fully mechanical pump but it's still quite a simple setup.

This must be the nicest early Maverick left, but I can't get over the gawky styling.

There are a lot of 4x4 yobs around here, I think the green laning scene in England and Wales is a bit more sedate - we don't really have green lanes or off road byways in Scotland.

I guess I'm just scared of electronic stuff. Said the XM owner...

I LOVE the gawky styling. It means folk assume it's a pansy soft roader thing, which makes it all the more fun when you drive through a section their big, butch Land Rover was struggling on.

I still want a Maverick. Or a similar uncool yet capable device. Clearly I need to be selling my cabrio in the winter and buying a 4x4 in the summer though, that's how I make a profit*.

I've driven one or two XJ's, well over ten years ago now though! I liked them.

2.5 pez manual not as bad as you would think.

2.5TD VM 4 headed monster I hated them.

4.0 litre straight six the only one for me. They go really well, but

diff bearings are shit and autoboxes need fresh fluid and filters regularly.

I remember rolling this photo of a spot I made a few months back when there was last talk on here about XJ Cherokees, so might as well whore it again.

Other than that, I have nothing else constructive to add but on a personal note, I like the early chintzy ones which weren't sold in the UK and I find it funny that it took so long for them to be sold in RHD. I remember the very first UK market ones being launced in LHD (around 1993 IIRC), much like SMART did a few years later. Can't see that Britons would have been clamouring for a 10 year old 4WD that they couldn't wait a few months for the RHD one to turn up.

I quite fancy one, to the point that when the Freelander eventually shits it, I will possibly replace with a Cherokee.

I need to do more research, but there is something with the transfer boxes on these....Quadratrac rings a bell? anyway, some have a viscous coupling so can be left in permanant 4X4 for on road, and others dont so can only be run 2wd on the road and 4X4 on the slippy stuff.

My Grandfather bought a new one....M reg I think, and it only got very light use taking him to the golf course three times a week since his clubs and powacaddy wouldnt fit in the back of his Yaris. He was most annoyed to find they wouldnt fit in the bloody Jeep either due to it having the spare mounted vertically at the side of the boot so he had to get a swing-away carrier to hold the wheel on the back.

When he gave up driving it sat unused in the garage for a few years since everyone on that side of the family has far too much money and when it was eventually pulled out I believe it was a dustpan and brush job due to terrible corrosion around the back end and sills.

I like them though....compact size - I have no use for a seven seater monster that barely fits into a supermarket carpark. They look different to all the other stuff on the road and are apparently pretty capable. Gramps had the 4.0 and it went like stink. The ones I see local to me seem to mostly be the Renault engine versions, its rare to see a 2.5.

I remember a documentary about a group of criminals who drove a Jeep Cherokee. They had a disused cafe by the sea, and kept a disfigured man in the basement. Long story short, a load of kids found a ship full of jewels.

I don't think the Cherokee ever came with any sort of centre diff, just in or out for the drive to the front wheels. QuadraTrac and viscous controlled centre duffs are a Grand Cherokee thing,

You might get punched by locals if you take it Glasgow International.

These appeal to me for some reason, but Wagoneers and TJ Wranglers appeal more. Shame we didn't get either of those.

I'd have one, petrol only though cos diesel is the devil!

The earlier type Cherokee/Wagoneer is the best type though. Or, for me, pick of the bunch would be the similar Jeep Gladiator pick up. With a nice big financially ruinous V8!

They're probably served by the American equivalent of Britpart.

Land Rover parts are cheap but they are yearly consumables.

I fancy one of slightly more modern lardy Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 ones. I'm sure it'll be awful but there's something about them I find appealling.

This. The luxury in them is fab and there seem to be a fair few with lpg.

I once test drove a Cherokee 4 headed monster with a view to buying it. I was put off by the heavy clutch, practically took 2 feet to press it down and dam near launched me out of the seat on the way up. Shame really as I like everything else about it. I also drove a 4litre but it would have financially ruined me on fuel. I would still have one but my 4 headed monster Frontera is fine for now.

They're okay. 4.0 petrol version for a grand, better than any junk from Solihull.

TREASON! Is true though.

My mate swapped his 02 smart car for an m reg one back in the day in 2004. We had to make an insurance certificate Friday at 2pm to get it taxed, based on a legal running policy (days before email certificates)

It ruined him financially. He got a belt off the coil once when servicing it, all the window switches on the drivers side broke, which took someing else out as none of the windows would work. He found this out on a Thursday by putting them all down, we went 40 miles to see a mate that weekend, it was a windy journey.

We used up 3/4 a tank of fuel coming home that weekend, 45 mile journey. Granted we spanked it back, hit 120 on the m40 (with all the windows open...) and that turbo switch flicked on the dash. We all saw the fuel needle visibly drop in notches.

The gearbox physically shat itself in the end, we were driving up a hill (the hill from Wycombe upto winch bottom Lane, by pizza hut). Things slowed down, and by the time we got to the top it stank of burning fluid. Nursed it home, it sat for 3 weeks then he bought a d red (sadly not d701swl, as that would have been epic) defender, which we rebuilt one summer at nights. Good times!

But expensive, I swear we had to chip in fuck loads of fuel everytime we went out. My mate still to this day says it ruined him, he started to eat into his savings to keep it running. But then we were 19, and living off sainsburys wages!
