Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 So here's the news of my Sunday.... first off, sorry about the crap photos, all taken with my WINDAZ PHONE thanks to one of these 3 comedians robbing my camera and hiding it in the dog bed, forcing me to set off without it So. Up at 6.30 am, have a bit of toast, spend ages looking for my camera, fail to find it and set off half an hour late. Still, it was a lovely morning: Took a couple of hours to get to the lad's house but this time I has worked out a proper route so didn't get lost. I had asked the lad to hoik the Ibiza out of his barn in readiness, and sure enough it was sat in the yard waiting... Used my little wanky hand winch thing to load it onto the trailer, didn't take long: Soon had it loaded up and strapped down: Look at the suspension on the Volvo!!!! I positioned the Ibiza well back on the trailer to get the nose weight down but we still had a MAJOR LEAGUE ARSE DRAG situation. There was nowt I could do about it and it seemed disproportionate so I crossed my fingers that it would sort itself out once we got moving, it did last time i used the trailer. The silver tape is to hold the rear windows in as the little microscopic flimsy hinges that they open on were bust apparently. The seller told me that he'd replaced them once already, but that one day the hatchback slammed shut a bit quickly and the air pressure 'spike' inside the car was enough to bust them again!!!! Thats SEAT build quality for you. With hindsight I should have done that job as it looks a bit rubbish now. Anyway I paid my outstanding £135, handed over the case of 'Doom Bar' Ale that I had brought as an offering (French people love it), then I could not resist asking the seller for a little tour of his shite fleet. We went round the back of his 'showroom': FUUUUCCCKKK!!!! This giffer-owned Kadett was his latest acquisition and had MINT rear arches like you have never seen. I kept telling him how we don't have wheelarches like those in the UK. Lovely. Original trims and ace badges too, this was an absolute cracker. CX GTi Turbo with bonis cat pawprints...... flippin sweet. There were a couple of SAAB 900 classic turbos and a Fiat 126 as well. Across the way..... A minty Fiat Croma, Saab 900 turbo with lovely tan leather, Mk1 Renner 5 and i can't remember what that red thing in the corner was..... Looks a bit like an Autobianchi but I would remember it if it was. BMW E32 7-series, Mk1 Strada, Mk1 Fiesta and a Smart Roadster; all guarded by a crazed cat that was running around going berserk during the tour: Next we went indoors: Fucking HOLY MACARONI!!!!!!! 1976 104, recently scooped up off Leboncoin for a few hundred euros; lovely condition and in a GR9 colour 'I mainly bought it because of the colour' said our man If you think the 104 is a great colour, then check out this 1977 Renault Poire!!!!! Absolutley mint!!!! 2-dr E30 323i; formerly owned by the lad's dad Mk1 BX GT (1.9 carburettor) 5-dr Renner 11 turbo: not long back from a professional respray, looked flippin ace. 'It properly flies' said our man One-owner chrome bumper mk1 Fiesta!!! MINT MINT MINT!!!! Its only a flippin Fiat Regata Weekend!!!!! 1.6 SOHC engine in this one, must be the '85' model. MINT Anyway after admiring all this shiz for about half an hour I was spent. And, I really had to get moving as I had a flipping long drive home. Edged up his driveway scraping the jockeywheel along the ground and finally got rolling. Got on the motorway and after about 20 mins someone came up flashing their lights and beeping their horn.... WTF is this all about? I pulled over and they did too. "Monsieur, something fell off your car!!!!" The fucking bastard window had blown out hadn't it. I asked the woman if it had hit her car - seemingly not, someone swerved to avoid it then it hit the road and smashed into over 1,000,000 pieces........ BASTARD The rig had levelled up though thankfully: Absolutely piss all I could do about the window though so I just had to crack on. At least it wasnt raining Managed to negotiate Paris no probs and no massive traffic jams either thankfully. The rig rolled along very nicely at about 65 mph, at that speed we were just above the trailer's 'vibe zone'. Just a bit north of Paris I was rumbling along and a dutch-plated BMW M6 came past faster than i have ever seen a car travelling on a public road, it was flippin amazing. He was covering ground much more than twice as fast as i was, he must have been doing 150mph I reckon. HARDCORE About an hour south of Calais I got pulled by the French coppers. I thought 'here we go' cos I had two tyres that were a bit thin and I had not had my new ones fitted (had them in the boot still). In fact, they just asked for all my paperwork, which fortunatley i had, took it all away for checking and came back 15 mins later saying 'all OK, have a nice day' and off i went. PHEW! Got to the eurotunnel about 6pm and almost drove straight on, it is a flippin great thing the old chunnel. Very civilised. It gave me 40 mins to have a proper look at the ibiza: Its super sound, but to be fair its not going to be hitting the road anytime soon. The tyres are all kippered, wheels all crusty (and they will be expensive to refurbish properly) the fuel system is half-dismantled following aborted efforts to get it going by the PO, the headlinign is sagging, lots fo chips and scratches in the paint, theres a window missing, a big dent in the wing and various other niggly problems like the seat foam is half-knackered on the drivers side, boot catch not working, blah blah blah. On the upside, just LOOK AT IT!!! I have always though that these were one car that just looked 'right'. I love the proportions, the angle of the tailgate, the stance of it sat on those intricate wheels, the simple treatment of the headlights, bumpers and indicators, even the placca bodykit with the red details - to me it just looks great, i think its probably my favourite 80's hatch, AND its got shiteness just pouring off it. Its one of those cars that I could just sit and look at (good job innit). I'm super glad to have it, I just hope I can get time to flippin work on it. I will start by sorting out some better wheels n tyres then try to get it running. I have a feeling thst the fuel system is just blocked solid with shite from long-term inactivity like the old Argenta. Anyway I got home about 11pm and went straight to bed, bloody knackered. Came out the next morning and surveyed the view: Where I live, I don't own the house, I am a lodger!!! How lucky am I - not many lodgers can have 4 shitters sat out front off the road!!! I admitted to the landlady that I had made the yard look a bit like Albert Looms' in Derby, she agreed so tonight I shifted the Ibiza up the garage to make some more space. Anyway thats the story, if anyone stumbles across a dead Ibiza in a yard that will give me a window, hinges and catches I will be forever in their debt if they can help me salvage 'em!!!! Cheers! andrew e Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Fuck me that Vert 14 is fabulous! Pain in the arse about the glass though Reg. Due to recent ice based bad luck, a proper diamond cur powder coated refurb was quoted at @£115 inc (obviously this is a southern price for a 17"). oldcars 1
Jon Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Pretty much all you say in praise of the Ibiza matches the sentiments I have for my Visa GTi. Pragmatically, I have no use for it and since it's been in philibusmo's tenure I've not really missed it, though that's probably because it'd been a garden ornament so long before beforehand. Likewise, it's wheels will be just as expensive to refurb properly and I'll just cup my ears and shout LA LA LA instead of think how I'd get replacement glass out here. Still though, if we can all keep these shonky old piles going, we can bask in the exclusivity of obscure fast 1980's hatches, along with RatDat with his Sunny Europe/Arna. I bet the recommissioning will be in stark contrast to your efforts getting the Pony back on the road - at least the rust issues will be easier on this one! That Franco shite barn is nirvana, like a Mainland Eurpoean Benjyp10 connoisseur. Makes you wonder why he got rid of the Ibiza!
trigger Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Excellent stuff, I love a good collection thread, I think that's a great looking car in black with that spec, you just never see them anymore.
nigel bickle Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Well, another surprise with yours. My rear windows don't open! They are sealed shut - might be an option for you?Send me pics of the clips to see if they are Fiat ones, renowned for being rubbish..
UltraWomble Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Superb collectionage, snafflage and even better Garlicchoddagespotterage. France certainly seems to be the place to go to get something nice for a reasonable price these days. I should really get my passport sorted out and break out my old level 3 Tricolour book and brush up on how to ask where the gare SNCF is..... garethj 1
Liggle Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Love these, drove one when I was about 15 on a family friends farm, by the time I'd passed my test at 17 there were none to be seen on the roads!
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 Blimey, it never occurred to me that there might be two types of rear side window. That must reduce my already-minute chances of finding a replacement by about 50%! TURDS
nigel bickle Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I suspect it's the same glass. If it's like fiat/ seat. fixings, they are just glued to the glass, with inevitable consequences. My 1200 sxi also has fixed Windows, which is a puzzle. However, the glass looks identical.
garbaldy Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Would the glass not be smaller for the fitted in rubber type though, it is definitely smaller on the mk1 scrotes which I found out by breaking one. Where's all the pics of your museum/collection of chod.
Parky Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 This thread has literally made me fap myself to death. If Dave Numbers can't get the rear windows off that scrapper at a reasonable price, ebay Espana will probably have something but carriage will be a proper pain. Or Bickle probably has the original tooling in his shed! nigel bickle 1
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 The guy I bought the car off told me about this one in a scrapyard in the Auvergne (central France): Looks like it has the right windows too. Only problem is its like 800 miles away. Maybe I wil see if they will remove and store the windows for me till the summer or until I can wangle something.
Spottedlaurel Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Excellent stuff. Great collection the chap has too. Never really twigged before that these have a single front wiper. I like the Touring Car/Max Power positioning on yours.
M'coli Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 That's fucking awesome, Bollox - much respect for the roadtrrip never mind the car!
garethj Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Might be worth a try with Autoglass or Pilkingtons first. They're both pretty good at keeping old tooling and it would make the postage a lot more friendly, then it's just a matter of ebay.mediterranean for some brittle plastic clips
trigger Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 My mate had Pilkingtons recently make a a brand new screen for his Allegro from laminate especially made which cost £200. andrew e and Lacquer Peel 2
cort16 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 So does that guy camp in the garden while all his cars are in the house ? Lacquer Peel 1
Ratdat Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 My mate had Pilkingtons recently make a a brand new screen for his Allegro from laminate especially made which cost £200. Laminated glass is no problem for a windscreen but won't last two minutes as side glass. That needs to be tempered (toughened) which is quite specialised.
Ratdat Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Just lop the arse end off the roof and make it into a pickup. Job done. garethj, trigger, The Moog and 2 others 5
Alexg Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Excellent stuff, it does look mega, but that dudes collection is stuff of dreams.
For Fiats Sake Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Great stuff, I would have loved to spend a day admiring his collection! Just a thought, if a flat panel glass would do agricultural glass specialists will cut to size and will be tempered as they use it in tractor back windows. One of my doors on the 4x4 has SEAT and not FIAT stamped on it - they have their uses!
nacho man Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 This might be worth some investigation. http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C450730 I forgot you had that kv6 45, how you getting on with it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Eddie Honda Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 My mate had Pilkingtons recently make a a brand new screen for his Allegro from laminate especially made which cost £200. There's nothing especial about Pilkingtons doing that. For an Allegro, they dig out the tooling and knock one up in the next batch., it's just the way they do the extra low-volume stuff. For one that they don't have the tooling for, it becomes a four-figure exercise (I think c. £2k) as they have to make the tooling for the job first. For Fiats Sake and trigger 2
spartacus Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 If it's just a flat piece of glass you can make a template with holes marked on it and get it made by any local glass suppliers, as long as it's toughened.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Its not flat unfortunately. I have got a few possibilities for a replacement window but none of them are likely to be very quick!!
garbaldy Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 You just need to find another leboncion purchase close to one of those scrap yards.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 Found some lad on eBay selling some Mk1 Ibiza seats so I asked him if he had any other bits. He's got a spares car but after a week of mulling it over has decided he doesnt want to sell me the window ("might need it myself one day") Miserable bastard!!!!! In other news, just done the NOVA bollocks for this, pretty painless to be fair to the gubbermint Lacquer Peel 1
