New Motor

After months of looking and wanting a Princess (nothing else would do) I ended up with a Royale coupe. There is a madness behind this as when I was a 15 year old in 1980-the local jeweller had a new blue Royale saloon.

My Royale has had the 2.8 carb and 3 speed auto replaced with a 3.0 injection and 4 speed auto from a later Senator. Bodywise very good-needs a paint. Mechanically-exhaust has a blow and front wheels "feel" loose so will have a look.

Plan is to take it to a local garage where they charge £28 for an MOT and see what it fails on. Longer term-repaint and generally tart up.

Thanks all,

Doesn't smell damp-so there must be a problem!

Had an SD1 years ago that was always wetter inside than out.

Lush, in and out

My cousin had a couple of these when the were in ten-year-old nice but worth nothing era.  One he smashed to smithereens, the other rotted-out

Always secretly wanted one, never got to drive either.

Oh, I say.  Outstanding.

Need to score some proper Royale 5-spoke wheels for it, mind, none of that Senator nonsense.

BOOM! great looking things these, and that interior almost deserves a thread all of its own.

Identical to mine save that mine had a boot.

It's a top motor and I would love another saloon.

Steve I hope you can weld - I know you said it's solid but I guarantee that if you start prodding you will find all kinds of unpleasantness. Be wary of any big six vauxhall of this vintage that looks like it has recently had tyres on the front - when the front strut towers start to shift the geometry alters and kills the tyres. New tyres can hide this.

Ask me how I know.

At least it does'nt have the solex 4A1 carb - you will get better fuel economy (an oxymoron if ever there was one) and the car will not be a PITA.

Ask me how I know.

Lots of updates please, I shall be following this thread with interest.

You have to love a car that has upholstery that looks like it has come from Raymond's Revue Bar.

Thanks all,

I do have the original alloys-I far prefer the original to the ones on it. Also came with another drivers door. The Seller Callum was a top bloke.

The idea of buying it was to have something to do on weekends and evenings as I have started to suffer from severe boredom. I will be buying a mig and will start to practice the dark art of welding on pieces of scrap.

Regards

Lovely car. I always liked these from afar but have never even ridden in one. Shame they don't make something comparable any more.

I always wished they'd continued with the Royale name. A Royale GS/E with digidash would have been a splendid thing.

wasn't vauxhalls version of the saloon one of these called the viceroy?

that is a lovely looking car, well done, a top buyage!

According to HML, there are only 9 Royales taxed at the moment, and 30-odd SORNed.

Vauxhall Viceroys are similar to Opel Commodore (C series).

Royale are Senator, Royale Coupé Monza. There are some minor differences, though. Taillights on Senators and Monzas were always smoked and the number plate is placed between them.

Wheelbase is the same as on Opel Rekords btw.
