Bentley Turbo R total shite! Now, Brooklands 'R' turbo shite....

Leave your details with the dealer and get them to call you if they get any similar cars. You'll go a long way before you find another dealer that honest!

The bar is raised now so I'd find it difficult not to resume the search if it were me.  How about an older one?  Can a slightly shonky but overall decent Bentley T1 be had for similar money, or am I wide of the mark?

Edit: £5k T1, all it needs is the brakes sorting, simple!

Indeed, sit on the dosh if you can and ask the dealer to source one for you perhaps. 10/10 to the guy.

Track action???

Chances of another one having a hidden, catastrophically expensive problem? - High.

Chances of another seller being so professional? - Low.

You have (briefly) scratched the itch - time to look for something else IMHO.

It's a shame it had to go back but at least it showed it's true colours now rather than later and you had the experience of driving it for a bit.

What a damned shame!  I'm with the others though: you've had brilliant service from the dealer, and if he can find you a better one, do let him.  I can't imagine anything less will suffice now.

Get the dosh back and let us find you something.

Does the specialist dealer have anything else to take your fancy? They seem to have gone to good lengths to keep you happy. Presumably they're not happy with the last owner though.

They have this

But it's £32500!

The dealer sounds like a gentleman sorting you out with minimal fuss, shame it's gone the way it has but this is the problem with buying older cars no matter what they are worth

Now the car is worth less can you buy it and have it fixed?........if it is an otherwise good one this might be more sensible than it sounds.

Now the problem is more exactly diagnosed.......it needs to get fixed to be sold.

As I say if it is otherwise good there has to be a deal to be done.........after all what are they going to with it?

Dave, you could've had a classic* Mercedes if you'd been quicker...

That's what I wanted more than anything. Then following one one day, I thought "Hang on. An XJS is more dramatic, and has a V12... and just as much leather & wood & good old British rust"

Indeed. This car unfortunately, is now a parts car. With a known fault like that it's sadly worth more in parts than as a whole car.

If it were me, I'd go back and see what they will do as far as buying it back with this fault. If you can get it at a good price you could take it to a specialist to get it fixed properly.

They may be more keen on this than you think. Don't forget it's going to cost many hours to strip the car for spares and what else are they going to do with it?

I've been in a similar predicament with my Mercury. It is a very straight original car and I'd spent a small fortune and a lot of time buying it and getting it here then I find out the engine is worn (worse than this Bentley)

In the end I decided the car was too good to give up on and I really liked it, so I bit the bullet and paid for the repairs.

It just seems a shame for such a nice car that you seem to like, and you'd even gone as far as sorting the paint etc go to waste. I'm pretty confident you could buy it back cheap and get it fixed.

It's going back to the previous owner! They are washing their hands of it completely even though they are losing money. I'm pretty sure it's been 'cooked' and if so, that engine will be a nightmare from now on, liner seals will be the next thing to go and then you are in a world of pain.

The only solution is to buy that engine that Flying Spares have for sale at £6.5K and have it fitted. Much as I love the car, I'm not doing that.

I feel really sorry for the car,  I really do. Irrational I know but I didn't like leaving it there with its fate uncertain.

Having just read the first and last posts of this thread, what a sad tale of woe this appears to be. I shall give you a manly pat on the back.

I don't think nothing will compare to this; I'd hold out for another.

Gone, but not forgotten! At least you can say that you have owned a Bentley from now on!

Either way that was a massive tick in the box.

It was a bucket list car and you were brave enough to go and do it AND you have the money back!

And the picture posted above will be a reality and here on Friday!

Fuck it, got a warranty this time and it's being delivered to me.

I did it all right last time and it went horribly wrong, this time, not seen the car, not driven it, it's the late one that blows head gaskets as often as Rovers (but costs £4.5k a time to fix!) and it's more money, with less history, and a lower spec car.

I am utterly fucking insane but I don't give a rats arse! :)
