Thanks to Top Gear we all know what happens when a piano is dropped on a Morris Marina. What isn't as well known is that if you try the same with an Ital, the piano will simply bounce off and crash to the ground instead thanks to a piano-repelling force field built in by ItalDesign. Legend has it that after too much vino during a lunch to discuss how to improve the Marina, the Italian engineers looked into the future, saw the antics of Messrs Clarkson, Hammond and May and decided this wanton destruction of British motoring heritage was unacceptable and must be prevented. This was their major contribution to the car but BL refused to even acknowledge its existence, the real reason why ItalDesign are so embarrassed by the Ital. Due to various complex factors, this technology wouldn't work on the coupe bodyshell, hence there was no Ital coupe.

The Austin Allegro was originally meant to be a rear engined car called the Orgella but a mistake with the plans meant that they came out of the copier reversed.

Because their flat layout boxer like engines allowed room for a larger passenger compartment. Lanchester's were the preferred dogging wagons of the Edwardian upper classes.

The Austin Allegro is more aerodynamic as a pile of components, before assembly.

I heard that rumour.

To save time in putting out their series of new designs of post war cars, the chassis and running gear of the P4 and Land Rover were initially identical designs. To improve the ground clearance for use on the Land Rover, the chassis was turned upside down. Unfortunately this precluded the use of the independent front suspension used on the P4, which was engineered for off road use, so a simple live axle suspended by leaf springs was used instead.

To save extra time the bodies for both were just simple copies of the Jeep for the Land Rover, and a Studebaker, that was found on the street in London, for the P4. Later redesigns of both removed any copyright infringement from both designs.

Ironically, considering the years of rumours and myths surrounding the aerodynamic properties of the Allegro it was the first saloon car with a drag coefficient below 0.30 . The BL marketing department however saw this as a negative feature, that was likely to put traditional customers off . Market research showed Morris Minor owners loved the upright stance of their cars as it imparted a feeling of solidity. So it was kept secret, both Audi and Renault paid royalties to Harris Mann on every 100 and 25 sold after they were caught copying the front valance and fog light shape in the 80's.

Later Allegros and Marinas were fitted with big plastic spoilers to increase the frontal area and thus wind noise.

As you'll know, the prototype Land Rover had a central steering wheel, there are many unfounded theories and explanations as to why this was changed to a conventional set up for production. The real reason, not talked about due to embarassment, is that on rough ground Maurice Wilks discovered that there was a frequent bollock/gearstick interface; leadng to complaints from Mrs Wilks who was fed up with him using the "pains down there" excuse for not doing his duty.

Henri F0rd was known to say 'you can have any colour painted on any one of our cars, as long as it's in black'. This is a complete myth. You could get a F0rd in any colour, apart from a holographic radar reflecting stealth paint job.
