I thought the black Range Rover was going up for sale back in the summer?

Yes but nobody wanted it whole, only bits off it. So I am going to have to take it apart.

Hmm, 6/10, a pass but could try harder :)

Ah, just noticed its 6/16, are you the fat boy that sits at the back of class?

I make it 7/16...

Space could be an issue.  An 11-car drive roughly equates to a 4-Huggy drive

How fucked is it that no-one wants it?

Hah, bonus points for the early Jag XJ dash warning lights...

Nice to see that's found a good home, as I've said before - give me a shout if an extra pair of hands is useful, gives me a reason to do something that gets me out of the house now and again.

Very, no engine for starters. Plus the gum ball rally motifs.

You could get your own back on mini owners by raping a decent mini and sticking the engine and box into it...

I really really like this.

I like it so much that after you spend £400 + on the gearbox, I'll offer you it's full value of £300.

Okay, now I see, good save. I don't know how you were so drunk to end up with some God-awful KIA behemoth, either. The good thing is, you have an early VP 1500, no, not an Allegro, but Plas with Plah. A very different car. I see the indicator lens has gone - I will look for one of them amongst my stuff. The indicator units are one of the few things which rot on these cars - take care of them - the suspension legs can fall off and if sill covers and rear stone guards are fitted rot can take a hold. Also the petrol tanks rot where they meet the rear valance - this is a priority to take off (only several bolts) and preserve/repair.

The dashboard looks okay and the seats are good. The VP's had Wilton carpeting IIRC. Dashboard wiring was 'traditional' and eschewed the by then common plug-in method. These E Series engines are worse than the A's by all accounts, but, if in good mechanical order will last for years. The weak spot is the automatic gearbox which can fail in comedic fashion.... it either works or it doesn't and a replacement shouldn't be hard to find.

Imperial or Whitworth?

Do you get metric Whitworth?

Posted

Good save, Chris. I can see this being serially bothered by FoD attendees - shouldn't* take much to get it going again !

Spotted a C15 from the train, too...

Entirely the wrong quote, which should have said about pulling the cord

If £50 you can afford, then go ahead and pull the cord.

If £50 you do not own, then leave the fucking thing alone.

Top chod saving Mrs_6c.

I'm glad it happened!

Do you have an engine crane? I'll happily come across with mine and any tools if you need a pair of hands getting the lump back in. Likewise any other work scrambling around/under/in as needed to help fix stuff.

I think you're only like a 2 hour drive from me in Bristol, so I can easily make a day of it. Won't be long before days are getting longer too.

2001 Volvo V70S 2.4 mauual. A friend said his brother was selling his car ridiculously cheap because he had a company van now and needed it gone without any fuss. I said why don’t you buy it, he said I don’t need or want it and it would solve his brothers problem if I just bought it today. I said I can’t raise that much money today so he lent me money and we went and got it.  I offered it to Mrs6C but she turned it down because it was manual or maybe no Turbo!

1988 BMW 735i SE. When Mrs6C purchased her 330Ci we started attending the local BMW club meeting, the area leader had a passion for E32s and I am so easily led! That is 11 years ago now and I still have it in good working order. I have driven around the Nurburgring, maxed it out on a German autobahn, driven non stop for 7 ¼ hours to Edinburgh on a Friday night, lent it to a friend with a broken leg, been shopping in it and it has never failed to please.

1986 Citroen Visa 10E. I wanted a Citroen Visa again and looked for a diesel and after several months could not find one, there were a couple of Visa 954cc 10Es for sale so decided to settle for one of those. One was in Essex the other Amersham so one Saturday morning we drove to see the one in Essex knowing we had an appointment to see the other one in the afternoon. I said to Mrs6C what if the Essex car is ok should we just buy it and cancel the viewing of the other one, her replay if it is good we will buy it and then go to see the Amersham car and buy that as well and decide the long term when the are both safely home! As it turned out the Essex car was fine but the seller was so horrid we could not do business with him so we bought just the Amersham car.

1997 Alfa Romeo 164 Super 24v Auto. A friend wanted a quick and easy sale so offered me a decent car at an irresistible price. I think this car was so spoilt by the Auto gearbox and strange colour combo of lovely dark green outside and blue plush when another friend said he wanted it I let it go.

1978 Alfasud 1.3 Sprint. I had booked to go on an Alfa Club day out and a friend had offered his 156 V6 to do it in. He called a week before to say he had sold his 156 but it was ok because I could use the 156 1.8 loan car from the local Alfa specialist. Friday night I was told the loan car had been sent out with a customer and it was not available. Another friend bought a Hillman Minx and the seller later offered this Alfasud Sprint as he was thinning his collection but had told me he did not really want it. Saturday morning I confirmed my friend did not want it and got the contact details, buy on Saturday and drive on Sunday. It was not hard to pass on as it looked beautiful.

Citroen CX25 DTR. I was using my CX2400 petrol a fair bit and enjoying it but it was a bit heavy on fuel so I thought if I bought a diesel then it really could be my main car. I won one on Ebay and it turned out to be a dog eared old thing. No major faults and but only 33 mpg so I decided to give in and admit defeat and resell it with a fairer description. I was pleased I was bid just £50 short of what I had paid but received some banter about my poor choices! The day of the collection I had a phone call to say they had broken down and would get a taxi as long as the CX was ready to drive to the NE. Half an hour latter another call to say they could not find a Taxi to take them and could I get them from near J20 M1 40 miles away. I don’t know what got into me because I would not normally travel 40 miles to meet an unknown ebay person but I think it was knowing there was still enough fuel in the CX DTR to collect them and get a last drive. They were so pleased with the car and what I had done for them that they gave me an extra £50 so I ended up evens and enjoyed 6 weeks of CX DTR ownership.

1993 VW Passat 1.8 Estate. I nearly left this one out because what I did with it was not Autoshite friendly. A friend had a Top Gear Style Event for 40th birthday party and I was invited to turn up with a low cost end of life vehicle that was road legal. I bought it from a local car dealer as a nuisance in the corner of his yard and used it normally for a week. At the event after a number of tasks were completed we ending up racing around a field and it did not survive.

1974 Peugeot 504 Cabriolet. A friend’s car for many years, he had it restored it, but now shitting in a shed in Banbury and my friend was in Scotland so I asked to buy it. After 18 months of maybe I was visiting him in Edinburgh and he gave me the keys saying I don’t know what state it is in because it is now outside and I am never going to do anything with it! Well that was almost 10 years ago and I have had some new metal let into the rear deck and another respray, I have had the Kugelfischer fuel injection cleaned and the engine started. I then put it in a trim shop for a new hood, carpets and some leather sections to be let into the seats, well that was 4 years ago and they still have the car inside their workshop!

1975 BMW 2500 E3 Auto. I have always loved the E3s since they were new and I was a child, a friend had one and we got drunk one night in a pub and I bought it from him. Trouble was neither of us could remember the deal struck and we had to ask our designated driver what we had done!

2008 Fiat 500 Sport diesel. As soon as the first pictures of the new retro styled 500 appeared I loved it and wanted one so put a deposit down. In due coarse I was asked to choose a final spec from their list, black, red leather and chrome trim and given a price. A little later I was told I would have to have a Lounge to achieve my spec and pay an extra £300 to achieve it. I said you can build it anyway you like but not at extra cost so they said I could not have it. I looked at a 500 Abarth and was disappointed with the performance so was ready to give up when a black diesel Sport ex demonstrator came up for sale at a considerable saving so I bought it. The plan was the 67 mpg car would become my daily driver, but due to a horrible ride on the lovely 17 inch wheels, 46 mpg and a big gap in the power delivery I always found excesses to drive something else. After 14 months and just 2,000 miles Mrs6C asked if I ever intended to drive the drive ornament!

1983 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0. This car has been owned by several friends and when the last one had to move he offered it to us and I turned it down so he turned to Mrs6C and offered it for a £1 and I refused to cough up so in spite of not carrying money she managed to conjure up a £1 coin! Needs lots of work but not rotten.

1986 Citroen Visa 17RD. As soon as I started running the Visa 10E I knew I wanted another diesel as I found hills I had never noticed before so I asked the Citroen Visa Headmaster to find me one. After a year had a call to fetch a free two owner Visa from Bristol, I looked terrible so I started home thinking I wondering how far it would get. Actually it drove quite well so I began thinking what will it need for its next MOT. It is structurally sound and just needed odds and ends for the MOT but it has taken quite a bit of work to tidy its appearance. It is used for trips to Europe and cruises all day at top motorway speeds doing 50+ mpg.

1985 Audi Coupe 2.0i 5 cyl Auto. From the same source as the Alfasud Sprint and beautiful again. It only needed a water pump, service and set of tyres to put it back on the road, but somehow for me the Auto gearbox did not suit it. I sold it for export to Hong Kong and had to deliver it to a shipping agent at the docks.

1972 Citroen DS Super. We attended the Citroen DS rally without a D and longed for another one so considered the two cars that were on sale at the event, the first was better than new, but at £70,000 was a non starter. The second was a tidy running car at a fraction of the price and we decided to go for it. I said to the owner I would collect it the following week from the south coast, but he said he wanted us to take possession of the car that day and give him a lift to the station in the evening. I said I could not pay until next week and he said I am sure you will pay me when you are able. The seller was an older gentleman giving up his beloved DS because he could no longer maintain it and a sad day. A year or more later we received a large brown envelope in the post with the note having a clear out thought you might like this, it was only the complete history of the car including its original service book.

1994 Citroen ZX 1.9D 5 door. Though the Citroen club there was a call to buy this ZX as the factory sunroof had parted company and blown away at 50 mph and frightened the lady so it had to go. Purchased for less than the price of the tax on the screen a neat playwood repaire put the car back in use first by me then my neighbour and ended up with a 16 year old learning about cars.

1976 Triumph 2500TC manual o/d. A friend needed to move it from the garage it had been in for many years with children leaning they bikes on its patchwork paintwork, he tried to find a home for it though the Triumph Club but nobody wanted it. He had had it since it was 3 years old and just didn’t want to see it scrapped so I said I would rescue it. I put it back on the road and used it for a classic Rally around the Lake District and had it 4 ½ years but while not rotten I sold it needing a full repaint.
