Total bollocks. It depends on the wording of the policy. It comes up every time it's discussed and regurgitated with unshakeable belief, rather than solid fact. It's what the plod would love you to believe (as it makes their life simpler) but it's not the actual case.

It doesn't have to show the MID. Indeed it can take up to 7 days to go on the database if the insurer is tardy. You will get a pull by the plod if it isn't on the MID, then you have an opportunity to present the relevant certificate. That relevant certificate can be electronic too. It doesn't have to show the vehicle is insured. It has to show that the person using the vehicle is insured to drive it.

Familiarise yourself with S165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 as amended. Case law of Pryor v GMP is of note too.

There was a bit more tonight because Mr_Bollox  talked about putting his Bi-turbo into storage reminded me ours needs to come out before anything goes wrong. Too late the fuel pump works so the puddle on the floor could grow! Looks like a simple fix as it is a piece of rubber fuel hose at fault.

I think it is a warranty item if only I could find the supplier.

When we bought the Maser 6 years ago we were warned that the rubber fuel line inside the the pressurised air box that contains the carburettor were subject to failure and you would not know until it was too late!  Yes I had them replaced, but not the underside ones.

The old pipe is close to the end and I have its replacement on my desk ready to fit.

I’ve cycled to work every day this week, as the Mercedes is now immobile having had its aux belt removed for the ac  compressor to be taken out. I’ve got wetter this week than in winter!

I am trying to get the aircon fixed in my 2001 156 V6 manual saloon. I am told I need pipe 60657141 Compressor to condenser and beyond. They are dealer listed as unobtainable, any ideas or anybody have a used one they could sell me?

I can't see it on the drawing. If it is just a flexible or rigid hose with standard connections a good hydraulic specialist should be able to make you up a new one or fit a new flexy onto your connectors.

I know someone who is good at that sort of thing but he is in Ramsgate area so probably too far for you. I'll be back in England in a couple of days, if you need his details message me and I will find his address.

The hose number 10 on the drawing looks like it has a something as part of the assembly. A restrictor or one way valve or something. Probably.  

If it is just the hose and not the widget, try the ever helpful Pirtek, they may be able to crimp on a new flexi bit.

My air con guy John is coming tomorrow to refit the new compressor to the merc. If I see him ( he’s doing it at home when I’m in work) I shall ask him, he specialises in old systems.

Decision made, my Alfa specialist has found a new pipe so I discussed Bee-cool claim that they could make any A/C pipe at a large saving, recently another customer had one made and it cost more than the dealer part. I have now given the go ahead to buy and fit the new pipe and I should only be a week away from getting the car back.

I am putting my E32 735i back on the road after a 1 year rest and it needs its power steering fluid topped up, the hand book says it also does the brakes somehow as well but when it comes to type of fluid it it says "BMW service stations know the factory approved grades". Anybody know for certain what fluid I should use?

I use normal stuff in the 635 which is the same steering brake thing you have.  I have a noisy pump and the braking system failed due to the pressure sphere failing. Could it be the fluid? I don't know as both systems are in their mid thirties, have been neglected for a large part of the cars life and done well over 200,000 miles. it had normal stuff in when I got the car, you can't drain the system without disassembly of parts only suck it out of the reservoir. What I will say is, look at the pentosin operating temperature range and that of normal ATF or whatever as I suspect normal fluid thins out too much when the system is operating hot. This could cause all sorts of pressure issues for example, my brakes would lock themselves up at idle when stationary and not  free off until some air could pass through and cool things down. Trouble with that is of course, the brakes are locked up... you can't move without burning things out. Then again, I don't know how the pressure sphere failed. 

There are 2 pressure switches on the sphere valve block, I assume are low and high pressure. I'd like to know what these actually do because mine do sod all apparently!

A bit of further investigation by unbolting the PAS reservoir strainer shows the fluid in there is red and I thought Pentosin CHF 7.1 was green?

Aha! That might actually be not much different from Dexron III.

Try this instead - this was the same stuff I put in my 635CSi all those years ago.

All that label is telling you to do is pump the brakes with the engine off and the fluid will rise, when it stops rising top up to 10mm below the rim of the canister. Probably knew that anyway. Lots of exclamation marks tho...

I've had all that gubbins apart back to the bare bones before.... bad thing to do as it physically doesn't fit back together, even with the strength of 10 bears!

I am now confused as to what is in there, I can't remember putting any fluid in there but I guess somebody has in the 11 1/2 years we have had it.

This is the fluid I have at home Total ATX, Carlube ATF-Q and Carlube Dexron II are red.

What is the difference between Dexron II and Dexron III?

I have read you can't drain the system so unless anybody has any bright ideas I guess it will be Total ATX as I have most of that?

Dexron III is an updated version of Dexron II. I think it is supposed to be longer lasting and more universal in its use.

Should be green* hydraulic fluid. I have a tin of Audi green fluid which rather oddly says it is  "not for use by the public"  in Switzerland.

Also says "not for automatic transmissions" 

I guess there has been a bit of history of muddling these fluids under the bonnet.

**I wonder if it is just LHM?  Neither VAG nor BMW would ever admit to using any thing French.......

I had ordered some Pentosin CHF 7.1 and it arrived today and is in deed green.

As what was in there is red I did not want to top up the reservoir with it so have used red Total ATX.

I don't know what is in there or who put it in there and I don't remember paying anybody to work on the fluid part of the steering in the 11+ years we have had it.

The battery is now charged and it starts without the jump pack although I have left it on over night because it has a 88 Ah capacity, also it got a wash today as it was very dusty.
