Moderns: What Would You Have?

When the Jag XE V8 Sportbrake is 10k I'll buy one.

They've not released it yet, so I've got time to save up.

If Dyson made cars, would you buy one?

No.

It would look smart at first, and work really well but gradually it would slow down, the enging would ingest bits that the filters are supposed to filter out. Eventually the spark plugs would ingest themselves and I'd need to put a new engine in. The airflow paths inside the engine would need to be stripped and washed every 2 or 3 years, tyres would be specific to it, and discontinued after 7 years so only used ones are available. The paintwork would be horribly soft and scratch easily. Also the windscreen would get blasted by the road dirt until it was opaque, and a new one needed. Which would be discontinued. The interior would probably be shocking...

I'd buy a 20 year old car made by Miele or Numatic though.

Is honest John a real person I thought he was a made up person like Ronald McDonald or Jeremy Clarkson?

Are any Chinese vehicles cheap to buy? The MGs are mega money aren't they?

They are too expensive for what they are, you can buy similar un-half arsed vehicles for the same sort of money.

Was there not some talk that MG are secretly(ish) knocking the diesel ones out via tax centres for 12 grand while they try to make their dealers sell them for an impossible 18 grand or whatever?

If they sold them for 12 then they'd probably get a fair bit of the giffer market that Kia and Hyundai used to live in.

That came from Macdroitwich originally, seems to be this lot shifting them: http://www.thetaxicentre.com/products/mg/mg-mg6-gt-s.html

There are supposedly a few of them being used as taxis in Edinburgh but I haven't seen one of them in the metal yet. In fact the only MGs I've seen in Edinburgh have been at Avis and Enterprise.

Anything as long as its not got an ECU or multiples thereof , A plastic body coloured bumper  , a Catalytic  zorst , no diesels unless its veg friendly and finally isnt a battery / engined powered pile of wank.

I've driven a 14 plate Alto today,  it's suprisingly acceptable transport considering they cost £6k new.  Drives a lot like the Cherry but does have decadent features like electric front windows and (key in the door operated) central locking.  I misplaced the key for hours because everything else at work has plippers and I'd left the key in the boot lock while cleaning the inside of the back windscreen.

Not to be called a stick in the mud, I just did a search on Ebay with the following criteria: 2012, 2013, 2014, max 10,000, petrol, sort by highest price first.

I scrolled through the first 50 results. Even I had no idea the world is this deep in shit.

Now I need trauma therapy in form of posting a shitload of shite into the Ebay thread.

I never even thought of the Lada Niva!   That's cheered me up no end.   Wouldn't want to wank 10 bigguns on one but at least I can understand it.

Isn't Celerio the stupidest name for a car ever? It's like they tried to combine the good parts of Celery and Cheerio. Goodbye, you're pointless.

Even Vans have gotten wank in the last few years.

Had a look at the new Transit today, cab is cramped because it is full of glitzy crap. No engine choice, Diesel only, but an automated manual queerbox is available.

I did this properly, searched Autotrader for anything up to 3 years old for £9500-£10000. I didn't like any of it.

If I had to choose one of them it would be a Honda Civic 1.8 VTEC. They seem to be fairly reliable, hold their value (comparatively) well, and look slightly different to everything else.

Having said that,

...you could add £250 and buy one of these:

Just for sanity's sake, I did an Ebay search with the following criteria: 1986, max 10,000, petrol, sort by highest price first.

Some of the results:

I can't possibly eat as much as I want to shit on modernz.

The base price for the new RWD Twingo is £9720. If it was any good I'd have one of those.

Otherwise?

A 500, some sort of Picanto, or one of the last of the old C1/107/Aygos. The new one is hideous.

The only modern I'd actually consider is an early Octavia RS (the 1.8 20VT ones), and they're only about £3k.

I'd much rather spend £10k on an '80s coupé and waftbarge, like a Starion and an S3 XJ. (And maybe a cheapo Proton for knocking about in).

Posted

Appreciate it's just an exercise but I'm in the same camp as many - that is, I really just can't get too excited about much modern at this price. Also, I have a requirement that if its going to cost my max (£5K), it must be enjoyable, long lasting, pref. appreciating and most of all, fixable by me with reasonably priced parts and a workshop manual available. This tends to exclude the criteria in question.

Like others, spending £10K on a car is all very well (if you want to & can, feel free, I wish you all the very best) but I'd be constantly scared of any noises/rattles etc. fearing what it was going to cost plus there'd probably be no info or manual around to aid fixing it so it'd need to go to a stealers so you're going to get screwed.

I would have a yeti. Well, if they are under 10 grand for a three year old one yet anyway.

Only new car I really like the look of to be honest. The rest all look alike.

MG6, anything else and you're not shiting hard enough

Sorry. It has the most ridiculous 'key' of all time. And the handbrake feels like fingernails down a blackboard. I was entirely disappointed that was just from sitting in one.

I would be tempted by the Fiesta with the little Ecoboost engine, unless there are some horror stories coming out.

Failing that, 159 (black, estate) every time.
