not sure which colour is most horrendous cack black or harvest gold!

Blimey! I wonder how that's travelled to Wellingborough in such a short space of time? That car was registered in Swansea and I've seen it running around my manor for donkeys of years in its very fetching two tone livery!

Happy days, those aren't tide marks on the side, they're champions league WIN status levels.

It looks absolutely horrendous so is there for brill, and can I take this opportunity to be the first to suggest this car is absolutely ripe for a BMC 1500 diesel conversion?

Didn't that chap from PC - Theodore Whatshisname do this to his BGT?

The yoghurt truck just crashed. That is just gopping. I'd like one of these cars too, but when I think of US driving conditions, and all the street-squeegees in my part of the world, sanity* retuns and I prefer to live vicariously.

Top bombing, wack!

For once I'm in agreement with Billy, get a diesel in it for extra shite points. An XUD for vegetarian-ness perhaps

Yep, I've bought an MGB GT...

So, will you be growing a White beard and smoking a pipe whilst talking about trunions and onions?

Serioysly, well done. Sounds like your really getting into the swing of it. Never been in one of these myself so might have try one, one day. Just make sure you don't get sucked into the tweed blanket, wire wheel, chrome polishing krew.

I honestly have nothing against MGs. I do however HATE seeing endless seas of the fucking things at car shows each summer. I do find that a lot of the owners are generally idiots who oddly seem to turn their noses up at some of my cars that are apparently less 'classic' than theirs but that is a generalisation, a lot of people probably get like that with my cars, its just there are more MG owners than anything else. Therefore they are simply an easy target for a bit of piss-taking. As far as cheap as chips old car motoring goes you can't get much better. What other 70's coop can you get for under a grand now? None.

I think Seth got quite a nice a Blue one a few years back didn't he for just £800?

Having never driven one I cannot comment on what they are actually like as a car. I follow one to work quite a lot which is the same colour as this is meant to be. The reverse lights come on when he hits the brakes sometimes and he does like to hoon it about.

I always wanted one of those, then I bought one! I was all posh though with a new heritage shell roadster and full leather interior with red piping, beautiful car... to look at (if you like that sort of thing) and pretty quixj as it had a new Oselli 2.0 engine with a Weber 45 dcoe.

I fookin' hated it!

I'd have much preferred one like yours to be honest as mine was a garage queen that got used and it was just horrid in every respect.

It looks grim, but you have entered the world of MG ownership.

I wonder what the response would be if you turned up at an MG meeting in it?

The oil consumption problem is an easy one to sort - two gallons of formula 1 20W/50 in the boot.

whs ^^ show up at a MGB owners club meet if you can bear it. then record the comments of horror etc etc etc

that is a hell of a tide mark on it, good work

Please contact the BBC immediately and insist they commission a new 8 part series featuring this fine vehicle.

Obviously the MG would be the star but the supporting actor could perhaps be a down at heel private eye, drinks too much, smokes too much, troubled personal life but is basically loyal and faithful and goes to great lengths to get the job done despite being regularly beaten up and abused.

Right, that's the cars character done, I'll have to think about the humans characteristics a bit now.

Looks like a truly likeable old thing that, hope to hear more about it especially if the words 'For sale' are involved

Something like the Cock-Ford files, living in a static on Ingoldmells seafront with his retired truck driver dad. Eats breakfast at the butlins staff canteen and solves mysteries in his spare time. £50 a day plus expenses. And a can of white lightning thank ya ma'am.

Aye... all of the above. A few trailer queens I see (warmer weather) but an 'honest' all weather BGT is lurking on Tyneside - Khakky Broon, IIRC..??

I do see them about, (For Saylezz) even... on the old A1 into Darlington.

Note: TOTAL shed of a Herald joined the M1, south of Leeds yesterday, keeping up nicely with traffic - 50 on Cameras! Christ, they are so small...

Looks like a proper pile of shit that!.........and all the better for it.

Join the owners club and tell them you have restored it to it's present glory...and offer to help others with theirs.

Dismiss critics without listening to a word they say....you have an MGB and are therefore correct in all matters automotive.

Very well done Mr Wuvvum.

Get some LDV Pilot badges for in and then turn up at an MG meet :)

That looks and sounds like the sort of terrible you can trust to get you anywhere, at any time, without any bother.

Top bombing wuv!!! Way more interesting as it is than the ranks of tartan red, wire wheeled walnut dashed ones that seem to outnumber anything else.

Wonder what the story is behind the colour scheme!

Lovely, that's the worst condition MGB I've seen in a long while, it must be left as is!

Posted

i would wager that it's a lot more solid than some of those shiny ones you see at shows.............crankcase breather blocked ? [oil consumption]

Twin SUs are a pain to keep tuned and synchronised. Find your carbalancer and colortune in the shed and prepare for endless hours of fun*.

They don't have to be. I rebuilt the pair of HS6s on our Herald around 4 years ago and I've not had to adjust them at all since it was rolling roaded soon after.

I think Seth got quite a nice a Blue one a few years back didn't he for just £800?

Wasn't quite that cheap but it was a bargain for the condition it was in - I drove it straight to DaveRapid's and it pretty much flew through an MOT.  It had the worst heater of any classic I've owned though which was bit annoying as we'd bought it as a sensible winter car.  Hope yours is better Wuvvum!

You can still get a decent (if that's the right word) TR7 for less than a grand.

Posted

Oof! You're right.

Looks like they planned to make new rear light clusters to match up with the rubber bumper but never got round to it.

MGB-Roadster-Rear.jpg

'Yeah, that'll do'.

Could it have been a metric/imperial misunderstanding when the Americans told BL how much sponge the bumpers had to have in them?

Posted

I've always had a guilty want for a rubber bumpered MGB GT. Can't stand the Convertibles or chrome bumpered ones for the most part.

That one is absolutely awesome. Glorious. Well bought.

Jesus, even my cat has sicked up better looking MGs than that.

Good going, Sir!

Well I've been roaring around in this this afternoon, and I'm actually liking it more and more.  It handles quite nicely - it's not going to worry any Imprezas through the corners but it's quite well balanced and predictable, and the steering is nicely direct.  It does feel quite vintage to drive in a lot of ways, but that's not a bad thing from my point of view.  The wipers are quite adequate, and even one of the wires on the heated rear window works after a fashion.  The heater isn't bad at all, and does a good job of demisting the front screen despite only having one speed.

It's used a bit of oil, but the level has only dropped about 3-4mm on the dipstick in about 30 miles, so not too terminal.  It's definitely losing some through the cap, so I'm going to order a new one (it does say on it that it should be replaced every 12K miles).  I'll check the crankcase breather too - good tip.

It turns quite a few heads - most seem to be astonished to see such a heap on the road.  I don't give a toss though - I can't see much of the outside when I'm driving it.  Besides, for what I paid for it I've got more than enough for a few rattle cans of harvest gold and a borrow of a machine polisher, which should be enough to get it looking at least vaguely presentable - if I do decide to tidy it up.  I agree with those who have said that turning up to a show in it as it is now and watching the faces of the tartan blanket brigade as I park up next to them would be quite entertaining...

Wasn't quite that cheap

Apologies, I do remember being impressed at the price you got it for though.

Never noticed the bumper thang before either. Where does that drain to or does it just fill up with a couple of cm of water?
