Unlikely Autoshiters

As we all know, Autoshiters come from all walks of life.

However, occasionally it is revealed, that people could be potentially much respected members of this forum, from whom you would least expect it.

Let me start with none other than Brian Eno.

Imagine my surprise, when I learned today, that he owned

- a 1981 Datsun Cherry

- a 1987 Austin Montego

- and a 1990 Skoda.

Read it here:

Considering his enviable fleet, it is not so surprising, that among the objects he always carries with him, are an electrical screwdriver and a battery tester.

David James the footballer is another. Though he's just been declared bankrupt, so it clearly didn't work out in financial terms.

Tina Turner once bought an Avenger from me.

Peter O'Toole and his Nissan Primera.

Here it is, apparently:

Due to my slightly autistic memory I still remember an article about stars and their cars back in a 1982 Daily Express car guide so quiz time. What did the following 'stars' drive....

1, Angela Rippon.

2, Larry Grayson (2 cars).

3, Sue Holderness (Only Fools and Horses).

4, Hairy Sex Predator Dave Lee Travis (2 cars).

1. Metro VdP

2.Spirit and Corniche

3.Beta Coupe

4. Trans Am, I think this would be before he started getting free Shoguns from the Mitsi dealer in Leighton Buzzard. He'll probably be dusting the Trans Am off again when he gets out- Birds love it.

Didn't Dave Knee Trembles have an Allegro that was painted black with double yellow lines along it and several other highly amusing features, seem to remember seeing it on some kids tv programme in the mid 80's.

(I would google it but I'm at work and don't want THAT kind of thing in my browsing history)

 (DLT that is not Allegros)

Hon. Alan Clark used to have a thing for 2cvs. Bought it in St Tropez in 1964 and used it well into the 80s often keeping it ( and several other relics at the same time like a battered 356 engined vw) in the House of Commons underground car park, much to the annoyance of the authorities.

Didn't Mahmoud Amedinijad (spelling) auction off a 504 recently? I think Liam Gallagher has a Bristol also.

Noel Gallagher wanted a Bristol but Tony Crook refused to sell him one from the showroom. Think he had to get it from elsewhere.

Out of a potential 6 you have scored 1.

Here's some clues.

Ms Rippon's car had probably the sexiest set of alloys on any car from 1981.

Larry's second car was available in both four and six cylinder varieties.

Sues car was British.

DLT said his second car was a little rocket that's quicker than a Capri 2.0S

I think Liam Gallagher has a Bristol also.

Patsy Kensit has two.

June Brown (Dot on bellenders) used to smoke an A60 Cambridge around until presumably the steering got a bit heavy for her.   I think hers had windows and bumpers, still tho.

Princess Anne, she's owned a Reliant Robin and at least 2 Scimitars. She still smokes around in one of those reborn Scimitars from the late 80's

I spotted the old Marquess of Bath (of Longleat fame) in a tatty old Renault 6 in the early 1980s; he also ran Renault 4s, and featured in an advertisement for them.

Darcey Bussell drove a 1979 Jeep CJ-7 at the height of her Royal Ballet career in the 1990s (her parents used to live round the corner from me in London).

We've had a picture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Maxi on here recently, I think.

Stephen Fry and the Duke of Edinburgh have both rolled around in FX4 taxis (er, rolled around separately I mean, in separate taxis, meaning they were driving them - God, that's how rumours start)

The current Pope was presented with a 200,000km Renault 4L.
To the dismay of the Swiss Guard, he immediately took it for a spin around Rome, and returned smiling from ear to ear.
He said it reminds him of his student days, when he had one to commute to Uni.

Another big fan of the Renault 4L is Pierce Brosnan, who owns at least two of them.

Michelle Pfeiffer collects Letter Series Chrysler 300s and does a lot of work on them herself.
I once ran into her when she was rummaging for parts at my then favourite scrapyard in Yermo, CA.

Meg Ryan has a battered late 70s Chevy El Camino and uses it a lot to hoon around the LA area.

German/Austrian industrialist and billionaire Friedrich Karl Flick had an old Beetle, which pioneered OMGRATLUK.
When his image consultants suggested to finally replace it with something more in line with his status,
he bought a used Audi 100.

The current President of Uruguay eschews more befitting transport for his Beetle. He also donates most of his politcal salary to charity, and lives a lot of the time on his small farm.

They had borrowed the car from a friend for a holiday trip. John subsequently smashed it up somewhere in the Highlands.

So did Nubar Gulbenkian.
