63k, £345.

"This car has been owned from new and garaged at home since new. It needs to be seen and assessed by a buyer but we are keen that it should have a genuine owner as it has only covered 300 to 400 miles a year in recent years and we would like someone to look after it the way we have done. I would prefer to answer any further questions by telephone and we will look sympathetically to a person who really wants this car"

I couldn't break their heart. Though quite what is meant by a 'genuine owner' I don't know. "No fake owners!"

The 2.1 engine's one of the nicest 4 banger dizzlers known to man - just make sure the belts are all good. 50mpg quite possible and if it's the Bosch pump then cheerio filling stations and hello 20ppl veg. I ran one with the Lucas Epic on 70%+ veg no bother, contrary to all the nay-sayers. Make sure the large diameter hydractive pipes aren't rusting, they're a pain to replace, unlike the rest.

We're talking XMs again. Sorry Richard.

Thanks FDB. It's amazing how much better the 12-valve 2.1 is than the older XUDs. I was astonished. Belts may be a concern - for duration rather than mileage. Which is still a concern. Survived a belt change on an XUD so imagine it's similar? Shite access but not actually very difficult.

Ah, I did think "The 2.1 engine's one of the nicest 4 banger dizzlers known to man" was an odd statement in the context of Renault 21s.

Next time round dollywobbler needs to sell the idea of an car auction visit to one of his publishers. Then he can sell is old car, buy a new one and get both a feature payment for trading up and the expenses (travel plus auction costs) sorted.

We just have to turn up and point out all sorts of dodgy chod to buy. We can also provide board and lodging for a night so that travel time to/from darkest Wales isn't an issue.

ive got a rover 600 gsd diesel in nightfire red and I run it on veg and the ground clearance aint to bad, so I vote for the rover

Wheeler dealers trading up, the autoshite version!

DW must get from lands end to John o groats buying a car for each hundred mile leg. Starting with a 2001 Vauxhall Corsa C (provided by our sponsors at Cavcraft), he must hit the heady heights of an SVM car by the end...

Posted

Bloody Ray Winstone has just popped up on my screen offering odds of 2/1 that DW doesn't buy a 600 or an XM

Just stuck my months salary down, this time next week I will be.......slightly better off.

Re, XM. To be fair, I always seem to be fiddling with mine, nothing major- just little bits and pieces. It's the kind of car that needs fettling to keep on the road. A pain for many people but a BOON for any motoring journalist.

The thing about an XM is that in those brief moments when they're running right they really are perfection, but when they're not it's like having a millstone round your neck...

The AS Midland Massiv 'Chod Auction Advisory Panel' stands ready to assist!

I reckon with that budget you should get an Isuzu td engined Cav or something with an L series, Montego?

Alternately a td Volvo, 7**/850 and start the Welsh chapter of SVM.

Genuine owner = owns for more than 2 weeks.

And for that reason you are OOOT!

A vehicle has been purchased. More info once I reach an actual computer. Now at a deliciously grim truck stop for lunch.

Well... I just checked Twitter and Mr Wobbler has posted a picture of two white 90s cars.  One is the Rover, can you guess what the other might be?

That XM runs out of MoT near the end of Jan... by which time it'll be invisible in the snow! Ice should be covering any corrosion underneath for the tester as well as slowly dripping onto his forehead to piss him off even more and just make an advise - corrosion on all hydraulic pipes, some out of sight/unable to check. Good thinking, dw.

Since the headlamps barely give enough light to read a book with, fit yellow bulbs for the ultimate French look for the headlamps (they always look especially good on a white car, fsr) and strap a couple of bright led torches to the grille.

Remember to check/oil the foot brake rod/cable (pedal to valve) if the brakes feel a bit wooden.

And if you're changing spheres, the hydractive system often needs a good half hour to lose pressure even after releasing the bolt on the doseur.

And it's white as well - will you be fitting black wheels and having the roof painted black to make it look like a drug dealers audi / merc / bmw?

Posted

No. I was thinking of painting the wings red and making it an XM Dolly to go with my 2CV. That'd look excellent*.

Your old BX is jealous. Owner of said is fairly green too. That might have been last nights tea though.
