the mk 1 mundano:-

Over optimistically the floor pan was designed to accept virtually any conceivable drivetrain, from a transverse four to a longitudinal V-8.

Wasnt that something to do with it being marketed as a "world" car so the same car platform and basic bodyshell would be sold in different countries with different engines depending on the market - Im fairly sure that you can get one with a 4.0 engine in Australia.

Edit - the Ford Contour in the USA came with a 2.5 Duratec

seemingly this "World" car shared only about 4 components lol

I recall the term 'World car' was very overused by many of the big manufacturers in the 90's to describe each one's medium sized car. Never sure it meant very much in reality.

Cougar uses the same floorplan

Theres been a few 4x4 Cougars knocked up by now,inc at least 1 V6 and a 4x4 turbo

Never cared much for the Mondeo, it's only a Jag underneath......

I had a contour for a hire car when I went to Canada in 1996.

It was a 2.0 auto - pretty gutless, especially when climbing through the rockies.

The shape & size of the US license plate doesn't help matters, aesthetically.

The US auto was a far simpler 'box than ours, too. No sport mode, just an o/d button.

I think it's true that the Contour was quite heavily de-contented for the US for cash money reasons.

I like the front plates they use in New Mexico.

I used to do work on a Contour, 2.0 auto, same colour as the one above when I worked in a garage. I actually think it looks nicer than our Mondeo! I always wondered why anyone would bother to bring one over!?

I don't mind the mk1 Mondeo, as it's aged it's grown more appealing somehow. It's just a shame they didn't come as standard as rear wheel drive.

Found a blank CD at work, downloaded a song off YouTube, converted it, burnt the CD, kept it carefully on my desk, skipped back to the car at home time, chucked the CD on the passenger seat, chucked my lighter on the passenger seat and scratched the bastard CD.

Marillion - Grendel gets to the good bit at 9 minutes then fucking skips unplayably...

Will try again tomorrow. Forgot what a pita CDs are!

Not even gonna mention the 3 hours I spent writing a post on here last night only to have my laptop crash and shit everything up...

My Corolla E90 was sold in the Asian, European and American markets unchanged albeit to meet emission legislation. Most "world cars" are sold in every market except the States, but they're becoming a bit more integrated now that they're finally began buying economical cars in any decent quantity.

I had a mk1 mondeo a few years ago. 1.8 saloon with standard gaffer taped rear bumper.

Solid comfy big bus and have to say I preferred it to the mk3 mondeo I had more recently

The most worldly part of the Mondeo was the name - chosen because Monde = World.

I read that in Auto Express, they had a special Mondeo development edition because it was such a big deal.

If only Renault employed people with eyesight, ability, co-ordination or general can-be-arsed-ness when they made the Laguna.

Zut alors Antoine! Never have I seen such shit! Quickly, adapt this platform for the mk4 Espace before they notice!

Current Focus seems to be about as world car as they come - was in one (booted 'sedan') last week in Americaland, identical to European and Asian models.

No 4 liter in Australian mondeos (it's a big lump) but it goes nicely in the falcon. Falcons are cheap and tough which is why there are very few mondeos in oz.
