Dollywobbler's GR-8 Rover - getting better all the time

Same here. The Nationalists up here seem to think they have the right to hogg the flag.

I'd say it was the St. George's Cross that the right wing mentals have corrupted, but I know what DW's getting at. Plus, Wales.

I understand the point, Jon, but it still bugs me. And on the Wales point, would anyone (sensible) in England react negatively to a Welsh flag? Just seems we're too prepared to accept criticism rather than be rightly proud of what we have.

I'm going to leave it here, though, because I don't want to turn Dollingtons new car caper into a nationalist bitchfight.

Ps. Nice car Doll.

Anyone who buys an R8, regardless of its condition, is a first class WINNER.  This is a fact.

Should look alright cleaned up, you could do a lot worse and these do seem to have hit the bottom of their depreciation curve.

That Honda Civic I took on the rally to Spain was totally fucked by the time we got it back. The suspension was clunking and rattling like a skeletons arse cheeks. Going from giffing around doing 50 miles a month to suddenly doing 2500 miles in a week took it's toll. Hopefully this isn' the case here.

Looks OK that despite the graphics.  If it has the later seats then you should find those comfy Ian, same as wot I got in the 220.

I couldn't possibly agree more if I tried, Chris. The Union flag is NOT a banner for the racists and we (as an assembly of nations) need to make that point clear, same with the Cross of St George, or the other flags of UK countries should it come to it.

Sorry for the rant on your thread, Ian, don't forget the 'after' pictures when all the stickers have gone.

One thing I must remember - does anyone have the correct plastic grille for this car? I might have to refit the later one until I can source the proper bit. Annoyingly, someone has drilled holes in the bonnet to fit it, which have gone rusty. A decent car is trying to emerge though! I'm sure of it!

Well, I'm taking a break from sticker removal - pretty hot work! I've detailed the first part of my journey here. http://classichub.wordpress.com/2014/07/23/how-will-i-get-home-part-one-delivery/

No more details of the car in that report - just what I got up to beforehand. Now to see if I can get the glue residue off without spending any money...

For removing those stickers try a hair dryer, this worked when I had to pull a big GB sticker off the boot on my old BMW E39. Held the heat on it for about a minute then it peeled off and barely left any mark or residue.

If not then normal household fairy liquid shifts that stuff quite well.

Hairdryer unnecessary in this heat. Lots of glue being left though. I'll try Fairy. WD40 wasn't too impressive, brake cleaner worked sort of. It turned into smeary, gluey mess instead. I have also repaired the boot lid latch, adjusted the windscreen wipers and jets and am now planning to tackle a small patch of surface rot on the nearside sill. It has resisted various pokey things, which is good! Still solid then.

All we use is thinners in a spray bottle; spray liberally, use an old cloth or an old towel and rub off. We're doing it on 6 month old coaches just now to rebrand stuff for the Commonwealth Games and it's A-OK with those.

Posted

cms is right there's no pointing in pissing around just use thinners, make sure you wipe it all off and be ready to give the car a good polish when you're done.

Kettle of hot water works perfectly. I used to do a lot of sticker removal for living.

seemingly whoever did the grill didnt butcher the original hence the red trim under the lights

when they facelifted these with the grill a couple i used to work with bought one new and the were given the option of no grill- so their car had small grill and long indicators

joe - makea wid da parts

Hairnet - English translation:

Joe, you have the parts he needs, don't you?

Sorry, the bits DW needs went to Phil(busmo) as long ago as Shitefest 2012. They're stashed at his gaff waiting for the right project.

When I took the stickers off the maestro van I used a toffee wheel which done an excellent job of the ones I removed. The same can't be said of the stickers that had been taken off before I got it as they had left a horrid mess behind. Thinners should do the job if all you have left is the glue though as long as you do it straight away.

The flag is coming off. It has unfortunate UKIP/BNP connotations.

Id be more worried about Meibion Glyndwr turning it into:

Still, thes shape of 200 are lovely, we used to have a 216 GSi.

Right. I'll get on it straight after this brew then! 90% of the stickers have gone now. Mind you, the paint seems utterly borked. It's like it's been used for greenlaning or something.

The red trim was yet more bloody stickers! Some sort of kevlar-look red stuff that had faded pink. It has now gone.

This makes me angry. It is our national flag and will only be hijacked by the right wing if we allow it to be. If you don't want a union flag on your car, that's up to you, but don't use some sort of national embarrassment as the reason.

Echoed here. What next, 'can't drive a car made in England'? Will the Rover badging and grille be replaced with Honda stuff? Little wonder our indigenous industry has vanished.

Appreciate the St G's cross has been hijacked for now by extremists but let's not allow the Union flag go the same way - it may only have a few months of life in it anyway! I think this points to a serious problem of identity and confusion within the UK, perhaps we all need a bloody good shake up.

And probably will be again in the not too distant future ;)

^^^ they're not green lanes they're normal B-roads

Good to see yet another R8 on here, in spite of the erroneous grill.

Pretty sure it has been lurking on ebay for ages and ages unless it had been through another owner in the meantime.

Knackered, cheap in car in 'shit paint' shocker!

Looks nice Ian, what spec is it? GSi/SLi?

If its possible, you could bung up the holes temporarily as i was tempted to do on the borrowed 820e I had a few years ago:

SLi. PAS, eleccy front windows and mirrors, manual sunroof. Most of the sticker gunge has come off nicely, but the two stickers on the back door have really left their mark, and the bonnet is still a mess. I'll get back out and get scrubbing some more, then maybe I can update my capers.
