Can anyone id the van ?

Bedford Beagle? Or Maybe a Hillman Husky? Certainly not a Singer Hunter.

Too early to be a Peugeot Boxer.

Petrol Ration: The Suez Crisis triggered petrol rationing in the UK from December 1956, rationing was controlled by coupon books, limiting private use but providing some extra for essential workers - lasted until May 1957.

By that point the Austin Sheerline would have been a gas-guzzling anachronism.

I looked at Husky. Not a Beagle, the low left Lucas brake light suggests something Rootes, or forrein, rather than BL

I was joking. I think it's an Austin or identical Morris Half Ton van - manufactured up to 1973.

Wipers mounted on the roof ?

Yes so the driver's windscreen can be opened, hinges at the top.

(Obscure, obsolete G.P.O. requirement, like the Minor Vans with rubber front wings)

Did they have a heater fitted ?

Highly unlikely, my '56 Austin A30 had an aftermarket heater fitted, a round thing with two doors (one to direct flow to drivers side and one for passenger) under the dash. My 1952 Citroen 11BL (Big 15) being more luxurious had a hole under the dash that was supposed to connect to a tube linked to the radiator but the tube was missing so all I got was icy drafts on my ankles. I doubt the GPO would be so frivolous as to care for their employees. A legacy that has carried on to the recent post office managers fiasco.

No.

Heater delete was another G.P.O. requirement, along with front passenger seat delete on Postal Delivery/Collection vans.

(In fairness most van manufactures of the time; the front passenger seat, wipers, heater etc etc were extra cost items.

Even the speedo was an extra cost item with some of the manufactures even tho a legal requirement by then)

BTW G.P.O. Telephones department had a different specifications to G.P.O. Royal Mail for the same vans

Rubber wings was used for long, some of the forward control vans had them too.

We've only just lost our last 08 reg  Combo's with wind up windows and a cassette player and I clearly remember vans not having a stereo at all. I also remember during Covid we had lots of hire vans in as we couldn't share them and all these hire vans had things like air con and touch screens and I felt like I had reached the future. Our vans have always been as basic as possible.
