I did it in a 1992 Citroen BX TZD Estate

M reg VW Polo "Coupé" 1.3 CL (learnt to drive with the AA).

1989 Nissan Sunny 1.4 LS in 1991. As with all Nissans of that era, a doddle to drive, which no doubt helped me to pass.

In 1989 with a driving school Toyota

Within hours of passing I was driving one of these - in white with a green bonnet. 10 years old with tax and test cost £60

A dark blue BSM Metro 1.0L - D533 OJN.  It's slightly embarrassing that I can still remember the reg number 25 years later.

Failed first attempt was a 206 diesel, passed in my Dad's 1.1 Uno

The AA had a fleet of Rover 100 Kensingtons so I has one of those. Started lessons in one but the instructor had some sort of nervous breakdown so a different one took over.

1981 Fiesta 1.1 L. I started off in 3rd from test centre and kangarooed down the road. I was convinced I'd failed so just drove normally and without nerves for the rest of the test thinking there was nothing to lose. Amazingly I passed.

My bike test taken on a Honda 250 RS the same year was even easier, just drove around a surburban block in Hendon a couple of times with the examiner watching. When it came to the emergency stop he said 'On the next circuit I'll jump out in front of you as if a child had run out' well ,I could see him crouching down hiding behind a Maxi from the bottom of the road, when he jumped out I almost fell off laughing.

The driving instructor gave me a choice of car to learn in; a Vauxhall Shove-it or a brand new (B reg) Vauxhall Nova swing

1993 Red Nissan Micra. I missed out by a week of taking it in the back up 1984 Nissan Sunny but the Micra had been fixed after I broke the clutch. :-S

Driving School Triumph Toledo, I did my driving practice on my father’s Citroen GS Club 1220. They were very different in that with the Toledo you could drop to walking pace in 2nd gear and pull away smoothly while the GS required 1st gear dip the clutch and lots of revs.

My driving instructor's utterly knackered 1996 Peugeot 106 1.5D in 2001.  The driver's seat shot backwards under acceleration until he wedged a chunk of wood behind it, the wipers tended to stop in the middle of the screen and the drivers door wouldn't shut properly.  I think it died soon afterwards, no connection though.

BSM Vauxhall Corsa, brand new, in 1995. Have never driven a Corsa since. Would like to have a go in one.

Exactly the same as ProgRocker, those 1.3 Polos were fairly forgiving to drive as I recall.

Green Citroen zx 1.9d

The instructor kindly* fitted a new clutch the day before my test so I had to deal with the new biting point on the day. Still passed first time though.

I still maintain that the driving test is the most important test you will ever take.

I still think they're awful.
