With such a clean, simple design I'm struggling to even guess a date.

Go on, which Rover is it for then?

looks like a very base nova or astra circa 85/86 ish ?? :D

how posh was the metro that went in vdp??

You just can't imagine the depressing switch-blanked sea of grey plastic that must have been destined for. I can't remember the last time I saw a MW/FM radio only in a car, maybe it was for something like a Metro/Maestro van?

Want that?

You need to see mu 8 track....

FM AM MW jokez innit

It is nice n shiny, mind.

This reminds me, I have a chrome* Beltek that I might try and find a new home for.

The magic one?

I will buy that.

My 2001 van has a FM/MW Delco set. No tape, no inputs, nothing.

It does have a clock though.

Swanky.

Aye. Why was it magic again?

It made me feel warm. Who needs a heater?

What you gonna fit it in?

I'm also going to guess it was destined for something light commercial, the bottom of the car range in the early 90s starts with no radio or an optional radio/cassette.

Wow! That reminds me of the radio I saw in a work colleagues car some months back:

I'd love to buy that and stick it in the Sterling for that authentic 'the orignal stereo got lifted and this is all I could replace it with' look, or that well known* 'every option in the list ticked, bar the radio' look.

I like that the first radio in this thread has a Loud button.  More things should have a Loud button.

Ford were still fitting radios without FM in 1986, I've a feeling Austin/Rover were too.

They were too. My 1986 Metro L had an AM (LW & MW) only radio.

Thank Jehovha for Atlantic 252

My first company car (in 1991) was a 1990 mk3 Cavalier 1.6S which came with just a radio.........no fm on that baby.

I was delighted with that

I have the tape version of that Philips in my Justy. The radio is crap. It doesn't illuminate, so you can't see what you're tuning to in the dark.

It's a Rover item isn't it? I had a similar one in my Metro GTi. :)

(edit: just seen Rover on the top of the box).

Same thing fitted in poverty spec GE and XE peugeots around 1989 Before they went to clarion units.

Where I worked in the stores we had a pile of warranty Philips units waiting to be sent back, and the local radio & TV repair man said he would have gone bust years ago If it weren't for Vauxhall fitting Philips radios.

Pretty sure my fossils '88 Seat Ibiza had one of those in.

A friend of mine has recently acquired a 1989 merc. 300SE. It has the original blaupunkt radio in it.  Just a FM/MW radio, nothing else. Somewhat galling on an S class!

Posted

That doesn't surprise me, I think that any sound equipment was an option on all mercs until pretty recently.

Strange on my Volvo.

Heated seats, Bose speakers, top spec (in its day) radio. Windyup windows.

There is nothing like getting a 30 year old car and finding the original radio or better still an aftermarket one with the manual included
