The opposite of autoshite..but value it for me.

A bit of a family issue.

Father in Law bought a new mk4 astra 13 years ago, has done a meer 13000 miles in it, never ever taken it out in the rain, never done a journey less than 10 miles, has checked tyre pressures weekly FFS.

He's giving up driving, and my son (21) will need a car for work in about 6 months, so I said "If nobody else wants it in the family I'll buy it for what it's worth"

Son has been told "I'll buy you a car for £1000 of my choosing for your placement year, but you pay the insurance"

(I did a fake quote on direct line and it's not bad)

I convinced FiL that he can not just give it to my son, as there are other people who would be pissed off by that.

Anyway he's offered it to the others and  been turned down (Feck knows why ?????)

So here's the spec --- give me a fair valuation....

1.6 105 BHP 16V CLUB in BRIGHT red

13K

Full Duerdens Service History all bills, mot's, a book with the fuel consumed at every fill up

PERFECT (No really. One parking scratch on bumper that I sorted with a paint stick and you'd have to be a professional to spot it)

Alloys

5 door

REAR seats have NEVER even been used

Never been over 50 mph never been to redline or even above 4000 rpm.

As I said it's not autoshite, but it is a cheap car and unfashionable.  If I didn't have a decent daily driver I'd buy it myself (and Lpg it I think).

£1000 was my view of the price I'd be able to get him on autotrader, with a stealer wanting £2K on a forecourt.

Seems reasonable to me, if its as mint as all that you might even get a bit more than a grand, I got £500 for a well used one a few weeks back

That'll need a good blast to get rid of the cobwebs in the engine. I say your 1000 is generous.

Nowt wrong with a spot of generosity, particularly within the family.  Seems to me that both Son and FIL benefit hugely from this deal, and I can't imagine you'd get a suitable car for the same money with such history... history that you know from your own experience!  You can't put a price on that.  If you grab it now, make sure you (not son) drive it daily between now and about Easter, so you find and sort any niggles before the youth takes it over.  I hope he is suitably grateful.

I think would have thought it would be hard to sell at £1000.

Doesnt mean it isnt worth it though. You just need to find someone looking for a good low mileage Mk4 Astra.

If it needs gone, then its worth what a man with cash will pay.

£1000 for a low mileage car  thats been looked after properly sounds ok to me

You could probably by a similar car higher mileage for a lot less but you dont know how its been looked after or how many people have thrashed it  if its due a timing belt and you cant do it yourself your looking nearly £200 at a garage a good service and maybee a tyre and your nearly back up to a grand again  not to mention the next MOT .

There are allways cheaper cars but you get what you pay for  ... if your lucky

I know they are a bunch of robbing merchants, but put the details into "webuyanycar.com" and then add a bit as you see fit.

Cheers

To be honest, I'd be looking to change a 13 year old cambelt anyway, even if it has only done 13K miles.

I reckon that is still pretty shite.

If your FIL was willing to just give it away and has been turned down by others, £500 is a good deal for everyone.

I wouldn't want to spend a grand and then extra to do the belt service,, tyres etc.

I'd buy the lad a cheap micra, and put the Vauxhall in your Garage if you have one and lock the door for a few years. It'll be worth a fortune.

Sounds like a bargain for a grand to me. Knowing the history the PO personally is worth far more than any 'guarantee' that a trader might offer on another car.

But, really, will it? stick it in the garage for ten years, and it'll still be worth a grand with an MOT, which'll require a set of tyres and a battery at the very least. And it'll really really need a cambelt on by then

Try and find another decent car with only 13000 miles on it for under £1000, you won't, I'd still be budgeting £600-700 for it as it is your son after all and FiL is making on the deal.

Cobblers is right, it won't be worth a fortune at all so forget that.

Folk will pay serious money for 'cheap sensible motoring' in really good condition though, there'll be some dad out there looking for a car for his daughter to go off to Uni with or something, who will be quite happy to pay a bit over the odds if he can be sure all the 'honest john' boxes are ticked about low miles, one owner, full history, never bumped or scraped and whatnot. If I was selling it I'd mop it, do the cam belt and put it up for £1500 at the end of Jan when everyone has forgotten about christmas and life is back to normal.

£1000 is generous. Yeah, it's low mileage but that just means when it gets used it'll go wrong. They tend to do that.

For the mileage and condition that'd probably doing £1595 on AutoTrader or a 'classified' advert on eBay. It'll need gentle treatment though, it won't like being hammered about etc after such gentle use and all those short journeys.

This to a certain extent, though my folks opted for the 'security' of a dealer when buying my first car and my youngest sister's. They learnt a lot with my car and appeared to do a much better job of it with my sister! My £500 Fiesta was a deathtrap! I pointed out lots of reasonable mileage little cars in the £500-700 bracket, but they felt better spending a grand

We all went to the in laws last night for a meal, and a drink (I was driving so only one glass of red all night for me), and Father in law started asking if I wanted it, so we had a little chat, and he's holding onto it until July, when my son will have it for his first job, after graduation.

He's refusing to accept money for it, but my only concern is that the rest of the family are somehow put out by this. I don't want my son's cousins somehow thinking he's had some 'favouritism'.

Come up with a price you reckon fair and let your father in law take it as payment. Then donate to charity or tell FIL to go on holiday or something.

So the handover was yesterday.  Mother in law said to me "Don't worry about anyone's nose being out of joint, we have just given DXXX, some money towards his house deposit"

Father in Law said "Now I'm a bit worried about the radio, which shows the wrong date"

I didn't take a photo of the boot, but there £100's worth of cleaning and polishing kit in there, plus foot pump, and genuine unused Vauxhall boot liner.

Thats lovely, now get the lucky little sod underneath with some bloody Dinitrol type stuff and make sure he keeps it well serviced and looks after the bugger.

I would wet myself with delight if I had a car that clean as my first motor. Not too powerful, reasonable on juice, ok for insurance, it's a winner all round. I hope he looks after it....
