we used to do all that go round the local places and snaffle them - remember the late 80s ford ones with all the range in them with CARS oon the front :D

Great stuff.

Anyway, I'm just going outside to blind a 747 pilot with the light on my Escort key...

Thanks for posting trig, i wonder if there were many who were like kids in a sweet shop and didnt know when to stop!

Yeah ford were obviously pretty pleased with themeslves with the whole key light thing.  Those high level brake lights look pretty dire tho TBH.

Haha! That brings back a few memories. My 1985 Capri LS had a lighty-up key. We used to sell the wee spare lamp and battery units for them when I worked in East Antrim Motor Factors. To get it out of the key, I think you pressed down the Ford badge which was spring loaded. We sold the Ford oil and all the Motorcraft fluid too, as well as "FORD Vinyldachreiniger" which was only printed in German, for some reason. Those Motorcraft batteries were a right bastard. They came to us dry, and I had to fill the fuckers with acid from an big drum, and the batteries always airlocked and spunked out acid on you. I ruined a lot of shop coats!

Fischer C boxes in the centre console. I used to think they were sooooo cool.

Hey, I have one of those keys! Shield your eyes because here comes some Men In Black mind eraser style webcam shenanigans:

Actually not bad considering that's its original 1993 battery.

Also I never knew they offered those horrible side repeater indicators as an option before they became compulsory.

Excellent stuff Trigger! I bet a load of that is now highly sought after by 80s Ford fans.

Thanks for uploading that Trigger. Our Orion Ghia had that digital clock stroke rear view mirror combo. It had a stopwatch too so you could time your journeys to the nearest minute. Couldnt tell you how many people i showed that off to. When you're 14 that sort of thing on your dad's car is really important.

Just this weekend I found my AR accessory brochure from about the same time. Ill scan and upload asap.

It's interesting that the brochure is split between accessories and service items. Nowadays I don't reckon they'd have pages about oil and spark plugs, because new car buyers don't give a shit about such things.

It's like in ads: car ads from the 80s often prominently featured information about the engine: hey punters get a load of this motor, it's a double overhead camshaft or whatever. Nowadays the technical information seems to extend to whether it's petrol or diesel, and that's about it. We're being dumbed down!

^ Same reason for the absence of gauges even on expensive cars these days. I WANT to know my oil pressure and battery voltage!

Nice one Trig, more enjoyable reading.

Do they (dealers) even do this sort of thing anymore, or is it just a choice of models and colours and that's the lot?

Posted

Those RS body kits are spectacularly ungainly, I wonder if you'd be welcome at an RS owners club concours with an ill fitting , but genuine RS, kit on a 2.3d Sierra estae?

Posted

80s-tastic ! Thanks for sharing, Trig !

Not a Ford, but my MX5 could certainly do with one of them 'audible lights on alarm' thingies.

New Nissans are pretty much all dealer fitted options now so their dealer catalogues are huge.

For some reason i was totally obbsesed with the padded bit that went into the headrest and the speaker direction joystick thing when I was kid. I think it was because we has a Cortina that just missed out on all that stuff and as it was an had no luxury's. I used to stay awake at night dreaming of owning a car that had those things. Maybe even one that had a rev counter if I was really lucky.

Posted

What you really want is a set of those wide door mouldings from page 19 "E", complete with a reflector, just so you can see the car when your about to T-bone it at 50 mph.

+1 for the joystick speaker thing obsession. As a kid I used to thumb through the owners book of the ford my dad had at the time and imagine our car had these natty extras the book told u existed on posher models, which I eyed up enviously!

Posted

My Mk4 had a wiggly joystick, It's one of the cars I really wish I had never sold, even more so far finding it hasn't been taxed since i sold it (for too cheap).

I wish they still stocked all this stuff.

90's Vauxhalls had that key light as well (as standard). It was often called in by the coastguard when the local lighthouse bulb had blown (not true).

On the subject of OEM accessories/add-ons, I've been after one of these four nearly 10 years, and have missed out on a couple (that were both thrown away because they didn't sell). :(

I've seen those square repeaters on someone's mk1 Fez on here, look a bit out of place.

My mum had the lights on warning buzzer..... Well, she bought it and never fitted it. It was a 59p Maplin buzzer, two wires, that you connect between the headlight feed and door switch in such a way that the switch grounds the headlamp feed through the buzzer. Absolutely zero percent technical stuff inside.

Posted

Ha ha those torch keys were gash. You had to press the living buggery out of the button to get the most feeble glow in return.

Did anyone else buy a Ford thinking the key light was the sensor for remote locking? I fell for that with my Sierra

Posted

The retractable loading platform-

BMW made a fuss over this when they launched the e39 touring in the late 90s-  ford beat you to it chaps

They're shit, as well! Just accessory crap.

I gave 80 quid for a set of BNIB Carello 640's. I got the better deal. :D

You weren't the only one! I used to love playing with the one in my Dad's mk1 Sierra estate.

I bought one for my 16i, even though it has no radio atm. Same deal with the cassette storage. :)
