Didn’t Nissan own Datsun at some point in the 80s?

Nissan and Datsun have always been the same company AFAIK. 

Datsun was the name used in the UK in the 60s and 70s, then a decision was made to switch to the Nissan name and both names appeared on the cars for a few years, including the first Micras.

My mum had a Y reg B11 coupe for years, that had both Nissan and Datsun badges, and it had Datsun branded keys too. NBP 504Y - long gone now I expect.

Actually, Datsun UK were a separate company who simply imported Nissan cars. There was a contract set up in the 60s and the company with the contract were onto a very good thing and Nissan were tied into it and couldn't get out. 

Luckily for Nissan, the chaps in the UK were crooks and when Nissan got a look at their accounts they dobbed them into the UK authorities to get out of the contract. 

Nissan started their own company in the UK in 1991 and the head of Datsun UK lived the rest of his life in tax exile.

The tax office knew they were up to no good and had been after them for some time. Had a team of people working on each director. 

In the end Nissan gave it to them on a plate as they wanted rid of them. 

It was Michael Hunt (real name!) everyone really disliked. Right wanker by all accounts.

I think you may be confusing that with AFG, which was the UK importer. AFG had nothing to do with the Datsun name that went on the badges.

Datsun was a brand owned by the parent company Nissan, and was used internationally.

But UK Datsuns became Nissans in, like, 1981 not 1991.   I clearly remember a playground argument between 2 kids. One saying he knew for a fact that the dealer would change the badges of old Datsuns over to Nissan if they ever went in for a service and that it had already happened to his auntie.  The other said he was talking bollocks.  Never did find out who was right.
