What would you buy with £25,000?

I ain't got £25k, i'd struggle to scrape together 25,000 rupees  .

But my mate was telling me how his brother has just bought a secondhand range rover for this amount and it got us talking about what we would buy.

He reckons he'd get; Evo 8 (chavvy twat) and red 2.8 capri for weekends with a "slotty back window" which i worked out meant autoplas louvre  .

For me it would be Fiat 130 coupe (fantastically rusty and thirsty, but oh so gorgeous!), A red cortina XR6, and i'd keep my beige 1600 gl cortina for a daily . Partly because it's shit hot, but mainly because i don't think there would be much change out of £25k after sourcing and importing the other two.

So what would everyone else get?

Old Virage (the one with the Scirocco back lights) with the brutal manual 'box. I drove one years ago and it was a beast. And the Aston Martin purists* don't like them. If I had any change left I get it painted Ford lacquer red just to really piss them off.

I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a vehicle.

In fact, I'd wince at spending £2,500. But for that, I'd probably get a Yugo 45, a Reliant Kitten AND a Lada Niva, and have enough money left for a bit of tax & insurance on them all.

A manual Senator 3.0CDi 24v. I like the auto, but I'd like to try a manual. An FSO as Steve et all are making me v. jealous... a really nice Mk3 Cavalier SRi130 would neatly round off my spend.

For me it's not the car but the spares. When you go into a garage and he apologises 'cos it's going to cost £400 and you can just say "no probs".

I'd try to buy as many similar cars to what I had when I started driving and thereabouts onwards.

1965 Hillman Super minx Mk3. Azure Blue, with white stripe.

1970 Mk2 Cortina 4 door. Aquatic Jade.

1970 Austin 3 Litre. Deep Blue.

1967 Humber Imperial. Gunmetal Grey, vinyl Roof.

1973 Citroen DS Pallas. Light Metallic Blue, black roof.

1979 Opel Kadett Estate. Light Orange.

1970 Mercedes W115 200 Petrol. Red.

1977 Mini 850. BRG or thereabouts.

Late 60s Bultaco Sherpa.

BSA B25 Starfire.

and so on until money ran out or I got pissed off with one or the other.

And Mk1 Sierras. Preferably a 2.0 Ghia Estate in Crystal Green, Y plate. Plus others.

If it had to be one car, Citroen SM. £25k should comfortably buy one and leave enough to run it for about six weeks.

Otherwise, I'd be desperately trying to find a barn in which to stash the 50 hopeless shit heaps I'd just bought on Ebay.

Unlikely.

MUCH more probable!

Something shagged with a rover v8. And a lot of petrol.

It would probably be a Ford Fal;con XB/XC imported from Oz. I'd get an old Toyota Crown, a Montego estate for the rough stuff, and put a daft engine in the Yugo

With you there, John.

I would like a really nice Panda, my first 750 if I could find her again :D

Funny you should say that. How about this?

A lot less than £25K. MOT until June/July. No tax. Sweet little car though and would be mine if I had the space.

PM me about that Panda, please.

What could be better for £25000 than 100 shite-heaps?

If not that, then probably a Bristol of some kind. A distinguished and exclusive class of bad panel gaps.

As mentioned, I'd have a few cars that reminded me of 't'old days'.

I'd find a really nice MG Metro or even a nice GTa or Advantage. Partly to remind me of my first car, and working on a training scheme at a local Austin Rover dealer back in 1990 & 1991.

I'd also hunt down a nice series 2 Allegro for much the same reasons. In fact I'd probably find it hard not to buy up every 1300 a series engines car out there to save them from the inevitable...

While on a nostalgia trip, I'd have an MG Maestro or Montego 2.0.

Plus,

Arrow series Sunbeam Rapier,

Mk 4 Cortina, resprayed Peppermint Green with S trim recaros, slightly lowered and updated, sitting on 7J 4-spokes, with a Granada 2.8 chin spoiler.

Viva HC, preferably a 2300 SL 2 door.

Cavalier mk2 SRi, or even an LXi if I could find one, drove one for a company I worked for. Loved it.

Mercedes 190e, 2.6 sportline with the sport seats package and manual box.

That lot'd do me. Probably spend the rest insuring them all....

Whatever 50's or 60's Yank I could get for the cash with a bit left over for some go-juice. Failing that then a Jensen Interceptor or a bloody good Series Landie.

Id buy this 280CE which had pretty much been abandoned around the cnr from me..
