I've wondered how well a hatchback Princess would have done.

The B series engine was another odd choice, rather than using the 1750cc E unit.

Supposedly BL considered selling them in the USA & wanted to use an engines mechanics would find easy to work on if they have fixed up an MGB.

It also helps 40 years on when restoring them that many parts are available from MG specialists.

It was taxed as recently as 1 September 2012!

LWK...P was a Coventry issue of September 1975.

I'd say the association was entirely appropriate, as mass market beer was often shite at this time. Watneys Party Seven served warm, anyone?

Hi All - not sure if you could include my Fathers old wedges on the data base both long gone by now I would think and having looked on DVLA site. The first 1800 HL in dark green WPE47S and its replacement  a russet brown 2000 HL       XFF 570W

id say so given it had a V5 issued in 2011 and an MOT issued in 2010 where it comes back as a PRINCESS 2200 HL :) 

strangely untaxed since 1992, I do wonder what the circumstances are when a vehicle successfully gets MOT'ed but still never returned to the road

@Andrew353w's Skoda was like that, MOT'ed fairly recently (well in 2006!) but untaxed since 1989 still

(although in this Princess's case the cynic in me wonders if it was MOT'ed in 2010 to rob it of its plate but it never happened for one reason or another)

I hadn’t tried many *EA combinations; I got as far as E then decided just to put R in and a green wedge appeared! I know you have more tools than I do Dez so I reckon you could do a fair bit of poking around.

to be fair the tools I have dont generally do partial marks I still have to know the full reg or VIN number to get a result

so if someone handed me the picture and said "figure out the rest of its reg" I would of done exactly as you did :) 

 

although I do have a couple tricks up my sleeve to help speed up this process

in that because I have spent far too much time studying the English vehicle registration system

I know generally for a given Suffix, what leading letter would go with that suffix letter

for example I know that an R Suffix car would more then likely start with a late alphabetical letter so there would no point trying saying BEA5R so I would skip to probably REA-R straight away (as I know most registration series had alphabetically made it to R, by the R suffix time period)

a good jumping off point is that in on the 1st of October 1974, every single registration series in England Wales and Scotland, reset to Gxx-N (as thats when the DVLC computer and local VRO's took over from county councils

so you can just work forward from that, plus when you have studied as many registrations as I have you tend to get a feel for stuff

the DVLA simply issue plates/series that where not issued in period as age related plates today 

so for example PHH-P was never issued in period as during the P Suffix period Carlisle was on MHH-P so that left PHH-P to be issued by the DVLA as an age related series :) 

and this works because the first Serial letter, just went up on its own accord, it never changed because the suffix changed, For example see KOO120N and KWC403P,

note the suffix change but the serial letter just keeps going, until they hit the end of the location markers for that area, (Essex in this case) then they wrap around again but with the next serial letter, so after KJN-P LEV-P was issued and so forth

 

with this info in mind, you can then quite easily spot when even a suffix or prefix car is on an Age related plate :)

because you quickly figure out what Serial Letters where issued in period with what Suffix/prefix's :) 

and then ALL age related plates pop out like sore thumb, not just the suffix-less plates

and the world is never the same again LOL

the serial letter rarely changed between suffix changes, so you can quick quickly get a feel for whats a valid registration mark and what is not a valid mark and/or what might be an a later issued age related mark etc :) 

 

obviously things can vary a little bit depending on how many registration markers a given area had to how many cars where being registered in said area

so if you had an area which had only a couple location markers for its area but lots of cars being registered there, they would go through the alphabet much quicker then say an area that had lots of location marks allocated to it but relatively few registration marks
