A gap in the Vauxhall/Opel collection I've been wanting to fill for a while, but these always seem to be expensive when they come up for sale, especially in saloon form. I've been wanting an Omega in model form since my brother had a couple of them, about 10 years ago. He also had a couple of E39 BMW 5 series at around the same time, and always said that if the Omega had had a BMW or Merc badge on it, there would have been a lot more of them about.

The box has survived in pretty good order, as these GM dealer boxes of this period are normally destroyed by now. Apart from some indelible price tag remnant on the front and, bloody annoyingly,

IMG_20250615_001344.jpg.b9bd0e16c9dd752a890494e2c54eed80.jpg

some permanent marker scrawling on the back, probably by some Vauxhall parts department bod back in the day.

IMG_20250614_234818.jpg.8ca4b82d63eea8b1fa16be0564430872.jpg

I'm really fond of the Schabak/Gama/Schuco dealer models of the 1990s. Schuco really made a nice job of the Omega, heading more towards the 'modelness' of Minichamps and the like, away from the more 'toyness' of the earlier Gama castings with their opening features (which in truth, I miss). I have both the Gama and Schuco dealer model Calibras and they look and feel like different models, despite being the same casting.

Try dipping a cotton bud in some white spirit or thinners and gently rub the unwanted paint away. Or T cut on a cotton but might be enough to shift it. Go carefully though and don’t press too hard as it’ll rub through the original paint.

Mighty nice model that though👍

Schuco did indeed make some fantastic models in the 90s. I do prefer the earlier ones with opening bits though but they seemed to stop making their models like that at some point in time. The accuracy and paint were spot on.

The quality of Gama went downhill in the 90s, the opening parts fitted quite badly in the end.  Then they had a swansong with the MK3 Mondeo which is in my opinion the best 1/43 model ever made. It's almost Minichamps quality but has opening doors and tailgate which fit perfectly.

Schuco and Gama had some crossover with a few 1/25 scale models. I have a 1/25 Schuco BMW E36 M3 which I think is a rebranded Gama. I also have an E36 saloon in the same scale branded as a Gama and the quality isn't brilliant. £25 they were new in 1991 too.

I don't know what happened to Schabak either. I have some really nice late models from them which have steering and tons of separate parts, even wood effect trim pieces!

Next up one of the Norevs I didn't buy last time was still there so it's mine now

IMG_2014.JPG.8a174bdfc150596f7dbe6ad25b07cf09.JPG

The next stall had an interesting 1/24 scale Datsun which I posted to the Tat Friday Emergency Channel and had two takers. Luckily there was another one! These are earmarked for @Split_Pin and @Spottedlaurel.

IMG_2015.JPG.62bca29ba678d7a65c12b7fada69e370.JPG

The details on them are really very good, the door shuts etc look just right and the grill and lights are also super realistic

IMG_2016.JPG.cb25f96fc85149db0677d6f6d9d68449.JPG

Not sure what make they are, the seller thought they were a magazine part work

IMG_2017.JPG.59d64c0bda17a62f7fda2e06070de4eb.JPG

The usual Spot On seller had three Jag XKss for £15 each, I went to look all around the fair and when I came back bought one that had been restored for £10. I would have painted either of the others anyway and both needed a screen.

IMG_2012.JPG.36b5f7ec41a0090af4a3448c18c886f4.JPG

Annoyingly this had a steering wheel when I looked at it so I must have lost it somewhere. Never mind, I'm sure I have a suitable one

Just in case anyone had a sleepless night wondering what was different about yesterday's Gus's Gulper:

PXL_20250615_130815499.jpg.e0146491ac9501ff2bba555ce1f94715.jpg

It has the wrong base, the orange interior and flat hood scoop belong under its sister car, the Milligans Mill

Matchbox Speed Kings K-38 Gus's Gulper

Because they share the metal part of the base, misbuilds are common, wrong scoop or interior colour in either car, I've got one that has a mix of yellow and orange parts inside somewhere too

Made by Atlas/Altaya/IXO. From searching the web they have appeared recently with prices ranging from £15-£30. My guess would be that they are from a failed part work that never made it to the Datsun Issue.

They did/do do a second Cars of Mexico series which offered the vehicles in 1:24 scale, most were blown up versions of the 1:43 cars in the same series but in different colours. Although not all the 1:43’s were copied in the larger scale. Maybe it was that partwork?

Nothing broke and it seems a really nicely made well designed model.

It's a nice model, although I much prefer the slightly larger Corgi one.

You can probably see that I took a sharpie to some bits like the A, B and C pillars, front indicators and touched up on the rear lights as most of the details were faded. I added the front badge and added silver to the name plate at the bottom of the rear lights. A tad bit of white on the rear lights was also added to give that SD1 rear light authenticity.

The scale is smaller than Corgi but a big bigger than a 1/43, here it is with my recent Matchbox SuperKings Range Rover:

I like those. I know the cost cutting is obvious with the plastic base and weird afterthought tow hook, but the shape is nice and they had a decent stab at the interior.

The Sunnyside/Superior version is 100% the same casting, I've used parts off one on the other. Looking forward to my boxed example landing on the mat any day now!
