Ta for picking up the Chevy too.

Not a bother - will pop those both aside for you!

That's odd, mine were on Wednesday

Yeah, the last time I was in The Entertainer the Matchbox mainlines were shown as 3 for 2 - and indeed the basic Hot Wheels still were marked as such today - but the signage was now removed on the Matchbox display.

Could be a staff error?

Yeah, I've had my eye on that for a year or two now... £3 isn't super-dear, but it's not super cheap... one day I'll bring it home! But today was not that day.

I can’t remember if I posted this to the thread previously, but I definitely made a mental note to.

Whilst out in Slovakia, my father in law bought this for our son:

I was possibly more excited about it than my son was 🤣 for a cheap toy aimed at kids I thought it was quite a nice reproduction of the real thing.

We went to a toy shop there later in the trip, and they had a whole wall of trucks, tractors and farming implements. It transpires that they make a bigger version of the Tatra truck we have, and that the bucket on that one can hold 100 kilos 😳 I could have spent a lot of money!

I'm looking for one or more of these at scrap prices, in case anybody falls over one...

9562104903_a0e2edd36d_b.jpg

I don't mind what livery - it came in several - because it's only going to get painted.  Damage is unlikely to be a problem because it's a simple, robust casting.

I also need a Morris Minor convertible and a mk2 Ford Zephyr (and any mk3s).  Again, one is only a minimum, multiples will be perfectly acceptable at scrap prices.

Just a heads-up in case you find any!

Pretty sure there’s a Zephyr here in your box Eddy. Red one if memory serves.

Thanks Dan, well remembered there!  So, less urgency on the Zephyr mk2 then, but I'll always welcome a mk3.

What scale are you looking for? I did say I was going to do a selling at some point, I haven't got around to it yet,but have taken the pics.

Thank you good sir!  Yes, the Saico Minor is about 1/32, which is just that bit too big for the space available.  So I'll have to decline, but again, thank you.

The models I mentioned are all 1/43, either by Corgi or Vanguards.  Vanguards also did the Rover 75 and MG ZT, both of which I would like to find as scrappers.  As usual, my intention is to paint them.

Not today but they turn up regularly. I almost didn't buy the bobsleigh even though it's the 007 version, but on my second look through his trays of cars I found an original 16 Hot Wheels so I grabbed that and the Corgi

IMG_20210813_100815~2.jpg

It was not in a good way.

Vast improvement; well done!

Shonky doors seem to be a given on these - and in fairness, this was the first time opening doors had been attempted by one of Britain's mainstream diecast  toy manufacturers.

Corgi kicked off the 'opening things' craze with their #218 Aston Martin DB4 in March 1960, featuring an opening bonnet and detailed engine beneath (and, coincidentally, an early one of those with disc wheels fell into a Tat Box just the other week):

(Turns out that's antique Plasticine in the engine bay, and not anything more repugnant.)

1075702412_IMG_20230728_1406062.thumb.jpg.7113dab969164a7bfdc288d8b92fcaad.jpg

Corgi continued to innovate with an opening boot feature the following year - the #224 Bentley Continental in April 1961, complete with removable spare wheel...

20200215_150804.thumb.jpg.ff6d13790e5f92c58a0e73b3ea76368f.jpg

While the #239 Chevrolet Corvair followed a few months later, with a detailed air-cooled flat-six engine beneath the opening rear compartment.

More opening bonnets followed - the #234 Ford Consul Classic...

and the #231 Triumph Herald Coupe.

February 1962 saw Corgi release both the #230 Mercedes 220SE Coupe with an opening boot and spare wheel, and the #420 Thames Airborne Caravan with opening rear doors.

571585850_IMG_20210806_1045512.thumb.jpg.60244bd80f3f5cca42be9805e16fda36.jpg

In September the #238 Jaguar Mark X was launched, going one better by boasting an opening bonnet and boot, plus plastic suitcases.

But by that stage Dinky had pulled out their #113 MGB, cunningly released on the same day as the real-life car's launch, and the novel opening doors feature was A Big Thing.

Corgi appeared to be blindsided by this development, and at first could only respond by adding more of the same opening features for 1963: including the opening bonnet and boot on the #239 VW Karmann Ghia Type 4, and the opening tailgate and flip-down rear seats on the #436 Citroen ID19 Safari.

1732990735_IMG_20230609_1522102.thumb.jpg.14e1ef272845b4a57c8e2c6b26744b6d.jpg

1454517676_IMG_20230609_1522152.thumb.jpg.5af94d07a5c6e7e9cb5750ed9aa29dde.jpg

The #310 Chevrolet Stingray of August 1963 was the first to offer innovative flip-up headlights:

1390062260_IMG_20230728_1407072.thumb.jpg.664f58a4edf2c3dc43fd61e579168361.jpg

But the really big news came in November 1963, just in time for the Christmas rush, when Corgi finished development of the #241 Ghia L.6.4, boasting 'the works' - bonnet, boot and doors, all opening - and tip-forward front seats, too.

This was a first, and at that point the ultimate in diecast realism - so it was no surprise that sales were strong, with over a million were shifted in the first two years of production. This was despite the real life counterpart being rarer than a rare thing, with only six examples ever built.

Unfortunately, in Corgi's rush to catch up and get it released in time for the big festive sales pitch, it turned out that it could be a little fragile compared to others in the range...

1018858209_IMG_20201002_1124502.thumb.jpg.c358dd69422da502eb42d35ebf3bd283.jpg

Mmm, shonky.

An unscientific study of one places this as the model I'm most likely to find in pieces at the bottom of any given Market Tat Box.

No new opening-door models appeared in the Corgi range for 1964, other than the rear doors of the #448 and #450 Mini van, but in May 1965 the #320 Ford Mustang 2+2 was launched featuring opening doors, with another 'everything opens!' model - the #246 Chrysler Imperial - following in August.

Within a few years, most new releases by both Corgi and Dinky would boast at least one opening feature - sometimes two or more - as the search for added playvalue pushed design innovations even further.

But for all Corgi's endless gimmickry, the #113 MGB was very much Dinky's glorious proof that the old stalwarts Meccano could innovate too - and even steal a march on their Mettoy rivals.

Excited by the reminder of the DB4, I looked for my other early Corgis.

I obviously need to try harder, although somewhere I’ve got a Plymouth Suburban that was my Dad’s only non Dinky.
That Classic is the former @FakeConcernand @eddyramrod, I think. Acquired in a deal for an X350 Jag. If only full size ones were a similar value these days.

One seller has loads of interesting stuff but were a bit pricy. I came away with this 928 with Tyco era wheels (there were various others like the probe on the table)

Nice finds there. The Jeep Gladiator is one of my favourite Matchbox of that era I think.

Some of those Corgi wheels have certainly covered some miles!

One for the Shite Spelling and Punctuation thread there.

The 007 Bobsleighs are pricey when still in their bubble packs. I remember having both that one and the orange one.

The Entertainer always have lots of HW although they've been stuck on the old cases for a while now up my way at least.

But I went to a branch I don't normally visit and came away with these.

I left the VW ID bus as it was 3 for 2. Really happy to find the Alfa, it's a fine casting indeed. Glad to know there's a Busso under the non opening bonnet too. It's a pity the Chevette has all that drag racing crap on it as I'd love a stock one. I remember seeing these in a 1989 issue of Canadian Auto Trader. My dad also had 2 of the UK version in the 1970s.

I haven't decided if I am keeping the Volvo yet.

The trailer I think was an RNLI set with a rigid on it and a Range Rover 3 door towing it. I had one a while back.
