What's the deal with the 1953 Studebaker? Interesting because I don't recognise it at all (presumably an American brand). If it was a couple of quid I'd enjoy looking at that for a while, but wouldn't stretch to a fiver I'm afraid. Would like to see some close-up pics if you go back and can be arsed, though

EDIT: It's Franklin Mint, and a little crude, but perhaps not too easy/cheap to find in this part of the world so might be worth a punt for a fiver, actually...

Will do my darnedest, chaps - may be able to sneak away for half an hour while everyone's troughing their sandwiches, so stay tuned!

I'm going to try and give you an idea of the few hours I had today to walk around Berlin and pop in to a few shops looking for toy cars. I didn't even find a branch of Muller, my usual favourite - just a couple of branches of Smyths, and a TK Maxx.

Starting with the TX Maxx I showed earlier

20221021_13200220221021_13200620221021_13215120221021_13215720221021_13230320221021_13231420221021_13241720221021_13245220221021_13252320221021_132532

Then we found this place

20221021_154256

If you want a die cast Trabby, this is probably the place to go

20221021_15431720221021_15434520221021_15440120221021_154442

The museum has dioramas visible through the windows with loads of tiny ones

20221021_154632

I wished I could have looked around the museum but I only had a few hours available after finishing a job

Onto the first of two Smyths

20221021_162119

20221021_16240320221021_16241020221021_16251420221021_162618

Some nice stuff on the shelves but not enough to make me part with my money.

Last stop before getting in the van was this Smyths, which was a much better prospect

But what did I buy?

Here's a demonstration of how things can get out of control. You start by collecting only Politoys M-series cars. Then you add Mebetoys, then Mercury, then Pilen...

Say hello to Pilen 206 / 515 (2), the Matra Simca Bagheera from 1977. This started out as number 206 in 1974, then got re-numbered 515 in '77. There was another 515 in the range, the Citroen DS which came out in 1974, and I assume this replaced that model. Both are ex-Dinky castings.

20221022_124047.thumb.jpg.f41e7a9f2433d1024888f8f9275082a6.jpg

This one is pretty basic really, with just opening doors, and it has what passes for 'generic' wheels at Pilen in the 1970s (ie, they were used on more than one casting)

20221022_124126.thumb.jpg.a74888102e794da7a9641141a4340cb2.jpg

The base fixed through the number plate is an unusually crude solution for Pilen, but it's a hangover from the original casting

20221022_124138.thumb.jpg.e8c1ca9260a2464a0d3e4e937dd6135d.jpg

Overall a very nice representation of the real thing. The Dinky only came in lime green, but the Pilen was cast in a range of colours of which this bright yellow is probably the nicest, and most accurate to the real thing

20221022_124212.thumb.jpg.3425c87b792f1ce2a52d01a19ae05615.jpg

Very black interior so difficult to see the nicely moulded triple-seats

20221022_124156.thumb.jpg.ea48067fd3281460fffa0fa58b5401f8.jpg

Not much going on underneath - note this still has the 206 number, but the box (not pictured) is marked as 515.

This is another instance of a fairly unusual car getting 'the treatment' from lots of companies - there's the Dinky, this one, a nice Solido with flip-up headlamps and opening rear hatch, a Spanish-made Nacoral (the origin of which I'm uncertain of - it might be an original casting as it doesn't quite match the others mentioned above?) and then a Majorette in smaller scale, and a 1:25 Burago, and probably others I don't know about.

Had a delivery in the post this week from @Jon.

Not one I was expecting to get, as when Jon stopped by to drop the Corgi Fiesta off, I saw this model in his stash and I mentioned that it was one I was after but @Split_Pin had dibs on it. Anyway it transpires that Iain then said to Jon to let me have it instead, which is much appreciated as this is another of those  Vanguards that I missed out on when it came out and now attracts silly prices on eBay.

IMG_20221019_224531.thumb.jpg.9c2d729f6e2cc4ea2b6017b6fbf4c2a2.jpg

A reminder of when Corgi weren't afraid of modelling subjects that other people weren't. At the time they moved a bit from '60s -'70s British stuff to more "youngtimer" type subjects. They struggled to sell at the time, with most being the type of older cars that were still widely in daily use (like the Cav, BMW E30, Golf Mk1 and 2, MK2 Astra) and even newer cars (like the Rover 75, Bentley Continental, Range Rover L322 and X350 Jag XJ) However, with time, as these cars have got rarer and being accepted as modern classics, so the models have got more sought after.

IMG_20221019_222939.thumb.jpg.3ef7ae6c84f916317be2c264d7d1a7b5.jpg

Me though, I love stuff like this. Everyday street furniture of my youth! Corgi captured the shape of the Cav nicely, I would have preferred the hatch but Corgi had BTCC models in mind when they did this casting, and being a saloon meant GSi and Turbo versions too.

IMG_20221019_222448.thumb.jpg.a44b07cd366997a90e0a37271676e48c.jpg

The Westminster blue paint shines nicely, and the Cav slab alloys are done well, if a little under scale.

IMG_20221021_210105.thumb.jpg.ee01e027982fc8def5608f0b19200e7c.jpg

Lights and badging, as usual are very well done (better than on some of the more recent releases), the pre facelift rear lights and appliqué being a subtle contrast to those on the turbo. The factory backbox looks great too.

IMG_20221019_220806.thumb.jpg.aee53bfa743a27268877666e98e275ba.jpg

Much has been made of the interior on these Cavaliers, mainly the seats, but with the interior being lighter on this one, it's not too bad, at least the detail can be seen more easily. Stuff like the door cards, console dash and steering wheel are instantly recognisable to anyone who has driven a mk3.

IMG_20221021_210542.thumb.jpg.0b5b7e0b2612c5ac1d2c28a36ea588a1.jpg

So, admittedly not as interesting as most of the subject matter on here lately, but I'm glad to knock another past Vanguards off the wish list. If I could snag the Carmine red SRi now, I'd be happy.

(But having got the Fiesta Supersport, the Professionals Escort and this one, this month, I may have to take a break from diecast buying for a while!)

I actually thought this was another Turbo 4x4 model! I already bought one of those very cheap from @Datsuncog and Jon knew that I was only going to buy this to put on ebay anyway.  However I'd much rather pass on the goodwill I got from Tim in letting me have the Turbo one cheap! They go for silly money on ebay. Before I bought one from Tim I was watching an unboxed one on ebay at £40 and rising.

This place is insulated from all that I think!

It's a great model and evokes the spirit of the original very well I think. I do think the partwork GLS hatch I got from ebay is more accurate though.

Yes, you got a cracking deal with the Turbo, although I was lucky to get one off eBay for way less than people normally ask. You're right though, the prices people ask is ridiculous. Trouble is, someone will have a desirable model on and chance their arm with a silly price of £50, and have it stuck there gathering dust for months. Then a few others will try selling theirs and instead of seeing how much they go for on completed listngs, they will see the one up for £50 and think "oh, that's what it's worth". Cue several models unsold for months and a lot of pissed off genuine collectors wanting them. I have almost every Vanguards Allegro ever made, I started collecting them when I had my real one, and they went for less than a tenner a pop. I only need the LE version in Tara Green to complete the lot, there have been two on eBay recently, one with a starting bid of £120, one with a BIN of £75. In the fucking sea with you!

I was glad to get this Cav though, as it is subtly different to the  GSi, and I wanted a couple of different versions and I can't see me getting the red SRi with the prices they are fetching... So it's much appreciated you sending it my way and for Jon selling it at such a  reasonable price. This place etc.

I really do need to get one of those partwork hatchback mk3s though. Jumajo have them pretty cheap, and also in the same burgundy red as the 1.7 D Envoy taxi I clocked up many miles in.

Haven’t done it for a while but it’s once again time for some resprayed and hand detailed shite, and for the first time it’s something BL:

For some reason these photos make it look slightly more yellow than it actually is - I actually used Ford Jasmine Yellow, an adequate substitute for Almond I’m sure you’ll agree.

Silver Golf is nice ^

Some bits turned up while I was on my travels. Corgi Commer police bus needs new glazing, I think this is the earlier version that has the POLICE script cast in rather than using a sticker or decal

This is a real curve ball, I believe it's a Corgi casting but it's branded Hot Wheels - but aren't they Matchbox wheels? I know Mattel ended up with some Corgi Juniors, and now own Matchbox, but is this really a mash up of all three?
