Shite in Miniature II

39 years is a very good innings for a casting.

I'm sure the original tooling's long since worn out, or lost to multiple changes of production facility, but it's great to see the original Lesney design's still with us after all these years, even if a few small changes have been made.

My MR2 kindly arrived from @Datsuncogthis morning, having what looks like a full restoration, so thank you!

I was expecting a fairly rough looking MR2 but as it turned out, other than the wing mirrors being missing, it looks in fine condition.

Hey, glad it showed up safely!

I gave it a quick going-over with a fine brush, just to get the worst of the grot out.

Looked better than I expected, too - enjoy!

Seventies Dinkies seem to fall into two categories, impossibly rare and thus expensive (Parisienne) or as desirable as a bout of Syphilis (Boats, CF etc)

How about a CF this clean?

Also found this that I wasn't aware of before, Matchbox Mega Blaster that takes a single cap from a toy gun

That’s just out of the box. It’s quite interesting to see how desperate over the few short years in the late seventies things were in how basic the casting was.

That does look jolly decent - though for me, the teeny-tiny speed wheels off the Mini Clubman really doesn't help the overall look.

There's a chap who does various Code 3s using older style wheels, which has proved to me that really the casting's not too bad at all.

Dinky_Bedford_CF_Code_3.thumb.jpg.8e9e9221d63168eeb73d982f941cb2f6.jpg

I mean, it's a simple enough casting, and a bit lacking in opening bits and pieces, but proportionally it's quite good once it's not on rollerskate wheels.

Also, some have chosen to go full custom....

Looks pretty good, that does...

Photobucket no worky for me.

(surprised anyone still uses them after they deleted half the Internet a while back)

I finally found some time to get up in the loft and re photograph some knock off diecasts.

They do appear in this thread but it's way way back about 5 years and  it was nice* to get them out again. The only reason they've all survived is because they are completely useless as toys. The wheels either don't turn due to fouling the body or the car doesn't move because there's insufficient ground clearance.

These are Polistil knock offs so at least the subject matter is decent.

20211210_162016.thumb.jpg.bc8279b20615dd206ab21beb00b7657f.jpg

The Lancia and Renault 5 are missing. The originals aren't much better quality though. They're from an era in the late 1980s when some European diecasts  went to shit.  Spanish Mira and Guisval used to be lovely solid little things which were fun to play with. They then turned into flimsy husks with no innards and terrible proportions. Polistil churned out some chiseled 1/43s with big spoilers and most features were picked out by paper stickers.

However, these are even worse.

20211210_162550.thumb.jpg.1f6ec0e20228f8cc6d41a97c657a1f15.jpg

I only kept them for sentimental reasons because my Granny bought them for me in about 1990.  They were actually displayed in their box on my shelves for many years after.

I think this Mercedes 500 SEC is a Matchbox knockoff, its quite a lot later than the other 3 copies which are of Lesney era toys.

Is the BMW based on the Corgi, which wasn't exactly a lovely thing itself? I had one as a kid but dont think it saw much play

I like these collections of knock-offs and crudities you guys have. I wouldn't want to own any of them myself, but it's nice somebody is preserving the unloved, ephemeral toys of yesterday. Much like with full-sized cars, I guess.

Interesting both were made into Super GT castings - got any pics of the bases? I have found both these as copies before but didn't think they were Golden Wheel

The bases are completely plain plastic with very crude suspension springs cut into the material. No similarities to the real thing underneath sadly.

I have compared them but the knock off had a different spoiler and door mirrors. I quite like the Corgi one myself. I have the Police liveried one which came as a set with a 1/43 Turbos 635CSi. Both are completely implausible as 80s Police cars and neither has any light bars or other Police paraphernalia!

These are the three I have - I thought the brand was HW, they have that and a number on the base

I had what I presume to be the same set but it had a silver Porsche 959, which as far as I know is where I left it in my late grandparents garden buried.  Shockingly bad quality but it was one of those toys your grandma would bring back from a week in Ingoldmells.

I expect like a lot of far east stuff, there are copies of copies and moulds getting used by multiple manufacturers.

I do find the copies quite fascinating, I've got everything from this tiny Blue Box J2

It’s incredible the Dinky CF looks 6000% better for a wheel swap. That AA van looks lovely though @bunglebus

I reckon that's a lightly reworked copy of the Corgi Juniors 'Shazam Thunderbolt'.

I'm positive I had that very model - and now I look at it again, seems to me to be very much a Matchbox Hairy Hustler rip-off...

Funnily enough, mine came from a shop adjacent to a crazy golf attraction in Blackpool, c. 1987. The set included a DAF articulated truck, and several other bits of rubbish I can't quite recall... But I've no doubt I'd recognise them if I saw them again...

Yep I reckon it's exactly that. Think I need to line up all my rip-offs with the originals for a photoshoot, I'm still sore that someone sniped the large plastic copy of the Lesney Airport Fire Tender

Anyway - on a late night mission into London last night, so scoped out Asda - brand new 2022 Hot Wheels box on the shelf.  I'm probably missing flipping it on eBay, but I think the Mario Kart wheels have a 70s concept car vibe so I was going to pinch them. Yeah they moved the post orifice inside it years ago so it's probably safe. There's one in Basildon too but most seem to have stopped selling Hot Wheels/Matchbox at £2.50 a pop

1975 Cadillac Eldorado in 1:64 scale by Auto World. I've posted one before in Lido green. This is the Jennifer blue colour option.

Bonnet fit could be better and I've had to flip the front tyres around as the white-wall was printed wonky. First issues I've had with an Auto World model.
