Whatever happened to...........the Renault 21 Savanna???

Didn't have my camera with me, but saw one of these in White in Sheffield the other day, the first for probably 5 years -  which made me reflect: these have nearly all gone!!! But where did they all go to and when?

They were on every street in the year 2000, now they've gone the way of the dodo. The R21 GTS for example - 8200 examples in 2001; 11 left by 2017, which if you're geeky gives an average scrappage rate of 10 a week!

What are we saying? Does it's new found obscurity qualify it as shite yet? I say YES!! And the 21 saloon even more so...

An amusing article on the (come to think of it equally rare) R21 model in general here:

I liked these.  Sold a few over the years and briefly had a phase 2 turbo.  I regularly pester a chap who has a 1 owner g plate TXI with the 2.0 12v engine and only 25k...i am hopeful that one day it will enter the collection.  the estate were roomy cars too, were they a longer wheel base than the 4/5 door ones or was it an illusion?

Did anyone make the inevitable?

I think they were; and the different front ends depending on whether the car had a transverse 1.7 or longways 2.0 meant the 21 could be had with four wheelbases.

Crazy, and yet so French.

There was one near me until recently a 21Turbo. I think they used to suffer problems with the cooling system quite a lot.

Sakoon is an Islamic counselling service for people feeling anxious or depressed. There must be a link between this and owning a 17 year old Renault, but I just can't put my finger on it.

They probably all went the same way as my dad's 21 saloon. It dropped all it's brake fluid on the exhaust manifold to set light to itself at 70mph...

Seemed a nice car till then.

Seven seats like the 505, and I think that they were forward facing.

Killed by the Sharalaxy etc

Copied by the Zafira etc.

Personally I liked the concept of a large estate with seats in the boot and I think it's a shame that the concept has gone.

I use a 21 txt hatch as a tow truck, on the road right now.

It's ok, not that special. Boggers, save for a set of 25 pepper pots.

My early 21 turbo though, is an absolute hoon. Love it to bits, not well enough to even consider recommissioning right now.

Overall, they're OK, if a little ordinary. Rare now, but that doesn't make them valuable.

I tried to buy one several times in the late '90s but nearly all of them were seven seaters, which I didn't want. There was a 4x4 I tried but the luggage area was seriously spoiled by the rear axle. (Seller was absolutely raving drunk, which didn't help!)

Two I've seen this last year or so:

In 2031, I understand, we are due to resurrect the last one from a drive-way somewhere in the Home Counties.  If anybody has any parts could they kindly look after them for the next seven and a half years?    Can we even A-frame on a Tesla?

Lol if that is a swipe at my R30 "Phoenix" efforts, then it was witty and I salute you sir!

Actually I might call the R30 Phoenix, very appropriate given the circumstances!!

I'd like to try one, but they're never ever up for sale now, and if they are, it's usually for ££££ in Ireland, like most rare Renaults these days (see also Peugeots). Bloody loads in France though so importing one probably would be easiest now, and they're not worth much there.

These or the Montego seemed the default 7 seat estate back in the day.

Undeniably so, but it doesn't stop them being very appealing to the electronic parishioners hereabouts!

Not sure if they're Autoshite in the true sense of the word, as they were very popular when new. However they are certainly an oddball unusual choice these days that most people wouldn't be seen dead in, so I think they have "arrived" on these electronic shores

SOMEONE GET ONE BOUGHT SO WE CAN TAKE THE PISS OUT OF YOU!!!

I used to pass a green one of these in someone's driveway every day on my way in to work up to about 2 years ago.  Then suddenly one day it was gone and replaced with a silver Galaxy.  I'm still kicking myself for not putting a note through the door.

Yeah but lets face it, to keep a Savanna that long, chances are it had a pretty well terminal problem for them to get rid of it? I'd say you dodged a bullet there

Ok -they ain;t Savannas,

but heres my 21 GTX a couple of months back -doing sterling towing duties.

A normally aspirated 2 litre its quite a torquey lump, and quite well suited to heavy haul. Its virtually all it gets used for!

and heres my 21 Turbo, looking disgracefully neglected -a few years back.

Totally standard now save a recent set of Silverstone alloys, it is virtually road ready. sadly the clutch is just too heavy for my damaged leg, so having the pair together will just have to wait.

I like them, competent but a bit ordinary (for me).

My cousin had a 21 Quadra turbo which did it's very best to bankrupt him for the 4 years he had it, seriously quick when it was working but everything had to come from a main dealer after waiting 2 weeks for it to be shipped over from France.

Looked awesome in black with red detailing.
