The Irrational Liking Thread - Please Add

It is the law of Autoshite that every thread must have an antithread, eg the GOM and its antidote, so as there is an irrational hatered thread it is laid down that there should be a place where we can cleanse our souls and admit to the most deviant of tastes. The rules are simple: one modern, one shiter that we lust after against all our most deeply held predujices. That's it :) .

To start, for the defence I offer the current Seat Ibiza. The styling is a mish-mash of random curves and creases to try and disguise the fact that it is a lumpy thing, it is underpowered and cramped, the Eco model costs as much as 47 M-reg Vauxhall Astras, but is probably no more economical than one of them in the real world. Worst of all a non-petrolhead friend has one which shares the garage with a VW Fox  Yet I am strangely attracted to it :?

I can also see nothing in favour of the Renault 19. It has had all the character surgically removed at birth, which always makes me run a mile from a car, and it isn't even remotely sporting (one point for energy engine :) ), but someone at the church has one and every time I see it I have to bite my tongue to stop making an offer. Why?

Next please :D

Modern I really like the newish Fiat Panda , if I had the money I would seriously concider one but then I would be entering into the whole world of male grooming etc..

Shite it has to be the venerable Range Rover Classic, fackin love these cars. simple but attractive design, powerfull, almost depreciation proof now :P all the toys, aircon, abs etc. plus they can easily be LPG'ed to lower running costs. Maintenance is done using various sizes of hammer and a welder. Plus they are greeeeaaaaaaat off road. even my non tricked up example is a proper larf off road and it will get a whole lot further than the olli wankers would have you believe without all that checkerplate. Plus the main advantage of not tricking them up is that you actually stand a chance of being recovered when you do eventually get stuck.

I'm going Corsa B here. Cheap, reliable, doddle to fix, decent to drive, 8V engines are magic, part available everywhere for next to sod all and value for money wise I don't think they can be beaten. Oh and they still fetch good money in almost any condition. Brilliant little cars in my twisted opinion.

On a £ per mile basis this thing has cost me far more than the Jag and Jeep put together.

Seconded with the current Fiat Panda.

Modern;

Kia Soul. I like the looks although I know it'll be a dismal driving experience

Classic;

PB Cresta. Fugly rust heaps thirsy as f*ck, lumbering old sheds, Lovely

Modern(ish) - Kia Picante. A lass gave me a lift in one a while ago and I was pleasantly surprised, I expected a right shitbox but it was quiet, nippy and a lot more fun than it had a right to be.

Classic: Reliant Kitten. I've always wanted one and I don't know why.

Modern:

For some reason I really like the Focus mark 2, I think it is very nicely proportioned (I liked the mark 1 also)! Also the Fiat Grande Punto and the Mazda 2!!

Older:

Alfa Romeo 146

Clio Mark 1's particularly the RT.

Any 70's Renault

Austin Maxi

I am not sure if you can really describe all these as irrational.

I've always fancied a Green Goddess fire engine, not sure why. 8mpg, 40mph top speed, and totally impractical. I'd still love one though.

Humber Hawk series 4- The base model in the final incarnation of the big luxury Rootesmobiles and produced with fleet buyers and frugal luddites who didn't like the American look of Ford or Vauxhall's offerings in mind. Vinyl seats replaced the leather seen in previous incarnations of the model and the option of an auto box was also re-introduced for them, obviously to make the driving experience even more miserable. I'd still "hit" a nice one though.

Vauxhall PC Cresta- A direct copy of the transatlantic GM designs of the mid 60's which also shared front doors with the FC Victor. Amazingly produced from 1965 to 1972, maximum RESPECT to anyone who bought the slightly facelifted one on a K or L reg. 8)

Brilliant cars, handle well [ yes really!] comfy, great long distance cruiser. Four speed manual ones are surprisingly brisk. Epic thirst though, mainly due to crap inlet / carb / exhaust set up. There's a pervert somewhere who managed to attache a triple SU set up to one, and the fuel condumption actually improved...................

+1

Bought one for my mother 3 years ago now to replace her HK import '93 Mazda 121.

Did not expect much from it really, was just looking for a small automatic, with the toys she'd become accustomed to in the Mazda plus some safety upgrades (air bag etc).

I'd seen the odd Picanto driving around and never given them a second glance, a friend of mine told me that her father had suggested buying one to replace her then current car a Renault Clio. I remember raising my eyebrows at the thought too!

After using a 2007 KIA Sportage as a long term rental while working in Oregon, my opinion of KIA changed dramatically. It really was a nice little SUV, the only complaint being road noise intrusion at high speeds.

The Mazda 121 required about 400~600 quids worth of welding and the KIA Picanto was spotted on eBay up in Arbroath. I put a bid on it and won the auction and had the car delivered to the house.

Turned out the seller was an American Baptist preacher from Texas...

I was still out of the country when the car was received but my mother was suitably impressed, I had very low expectations for the car but when I actually drove it I was very impressed indeed.

We've been thinking about buying one of the new style KIA Sedona vans over here in Florida for ferrying the nipper around (....of course there's not nearly enough room in our Saabaru 92x (a Jazzed up Impreza Sportwagon)

How my mum and dad coped with Cortina saloons, a FIAT 126, and a Ford Escort estate, I'll never know

We're not daft enough to buy a new one of course but we went to the local KIA dealers to check out the Sedona looks very nice indeed. Was also quite impressed with the Soul and I'm very smitten with the new Optima.

To top it all off, I had a telephone interview with a Korean company yesterday, I must be turning Korean!

That'll be the latest song from the Vapors for he 21st Century

Kia Soul.

Seconded.

I admit to being a massive fan of the Reliant three wheelers in their various forms.

Posted

Morris 1000: Can't see the problem with them. Unique styling, good fun to drive, makes me smile when I see one and they have stood the test of time better than almost anything I can think of. A car with real character.

ADO16: Sure they rust like there's no tomorrow but to me they'll alswys be a quintessential British icon of a car. The fact so much badge engineering went on with them just adds to the fun.

A40 Farina: I have the major horn for one of these, ideally in pale blue with a white roof, a slightly tweaked engine and wide wheels.

+1 on the new Fiat 500. I know they're probably the darling of the scene following modern car owner but they look as funky as hell.

The other day I was being tailgated by a 40ish woman driving a 500 Abarth, she was determined to out-accelerate the Jag down a motorway sliproad, she was driving genuinely aggressively, full beam etc, giving me the 'move over' sweep of the arm, the lot.

The little Fiat looked pretty good as it receded in the rear view. She looked well pissed off...

I reckon the facelift Quashqai looks alright. Not keen on the 500. Multiple waistlines remind me of flabby cicks squeezing into jeans a size or two too small.

Theres loads of modern stuff I like, no shame in admitting that I don't think! If I was in a position to be buying a new car then I reckon it'd be pretty hard deciding which one to go for. Still, I'm not so there.

Irrational like though. Well, I shouldn't, its pig ugly and something I also dislike. But I know it'd also be great - Porsche Cayenne. The full fat Turbo as well. Not the diesel or hybid models. I want to go fast at high altitude.

Old stuff - Loads of it. Its not really rational to lust after old Simcas, Renaults and Peugeots but I do. But one I'd really like is an old Yank muscle car - Challenger, Charger, something like that.

Posted

Cayenne Turbos are a grin to drive. You'd enjoy it. Something that huge should not handle or accellerate anywhere near as well as they do.

The hair-trigger throttle pedal is a major irritant, but other than that they really are what you'd expect from a Porsche 4x4. They sound pretty bloody awesome at full chat.

I've got the horn for a Range Rover Supercharged, but I don't think that's irrational at all as I consider them to be the greatest vehicle ever made.

Hmm, irrational likes...

Barkas B1000. Every time I see a battered panel van putt-putting away in Czech I keep thinking I really should try one.

Alfa 90s. I'm not insane enough to actually buy one, but I've driven a couple and once the cramp went from my legs they did make me grin.

These things;

kamakuro330-001.jpg

Pretty much everything I don't like about Jap cars rolled into a great big flabby ball of ostentation - yet I'd roll one.

'70 Ford LTD. Good enough for Dirty Harry, so good enough for me to want one - even though I know it'll be shit.

I saw one the other day and had a "Mmmm, I wonder???" moment and the urge to try one.

Seems as if it would be OK if you just needed an old Jap runaround and weren't bothered about rear seat space (I'm not - no kids yet).

Probably epicly shit and/or dreary though.
