Shared after being inspired by the sainsburys archive and the cool paris one, This is a photo archive by Leeds Libraries of Leeds and environs. Seems to be around 1940s-1990s and theres naturally plenty of spotting to be done and a gritty post industrial atmosphere to soak up..

Yard to the rear of 1-9 Hillidge Road, a terrace of brick built houses, each with one window to the upper floor. The window on the right has bars on it, also yard below with outside lavatories. The yard is a motor scrapyard, with vehicle parts and vehicles in various stages of disintegration.”

Undated View of Proctors Place, focusing on the old Methodist Chapel. Here it is being used by a company called Hurley for car body repairs and vehicle trading. This was prior to slum clearance in the area, photo taken around the early to mid 1950s.

Top thread. I have quite a few pictures to add, if I can find them.  Edit https://www.leodis.net/ has a lot of gems.

Wellington Street 1954.

Leeds Central Station on Wellington Street, in 1954, showing the car park to the right. The station opened on September 18, 1848, for trains on the Leeds to Thirsk Railway. It closed on May 1, 1967, and was demolished shortly after. It became the site of the Royal Mail headquarters. The warehouse of James Hare Ltd, woollen merchants and manufacturers, of 72 Wellington Street, can be seen on the far right.

I get pics sent to me via a family WhatsApp group, they know I like old pics with old cars. Then see if I can work out what it is.

Last one was this from the Yorkshire Evening Post as it looked like my Oxford.

I think that burning them was a widespread disposal method. I suppose the remaining metal parts were then gathered up and sent off for smelting.

London did the same.

Apparently the biggest clothing factory in Europe and a very good employer. It was effectively destroyed, along with the area that it was in, when the government opened the doors to cheap imports

OK not the official archive but i feel this derelict pub and the new building rising behind right beside the former tetley brewery wharf says a lot about the past and the future side by side.

@barrett

I'm no expert, but to get the ball rolling... by the shape of the grilles/cowls/bonnets I'm guessing the top one could be a Rover and the bottom a Morris.

Recently watched a video (of still pictures) about Leeds, I took some screen shots.

Fun* fact number 1. My Great Uncle worked at Hood's Tourist Office end shop on the corner.

Fun* fact number 2. Phil Taylor (Philthy Animal) of Motorhead fame was taught  how to play the drums in the top floor above Vince's.

Fun* fact number 3. My Aunt worked for Phil Taylor's Dad in the Motorhead fan club.

*Not very fun facts.

Now just odd car screen shots from YouTube.

Link to the video below. It gets a bit maudlin towards the end with grave stones, war memorials and Armley nick.

Fascinating seeing pre-war foreign stuff like the Renault, HUB966. Great effort keeping something like that running into the 60s when spares would have been unobtainium.

The van in middle is a moskovich, the dark coloured on left possibly a Volvo?

Undated During World War Two the firm of Charles H. Roe Ltd, at Cross Gates Carriage works in Manston Lane, converted chassis of hundreds of private cars to ambulances. This car was a Vauxhall 20 of around 1935 vintage. The rear portion of the body has been removed and replaced with a simple body incorporating a canvas rear cover. These fleets of ambulances were used by local authorities to transport air raid casualties. Private cars were very often donated by their owners for conversion to ambulances.
