Many moons ago I had an indicated 95mph in a Panda 750L...The speedo only goes to 100.

I think it had a bigger engine (a 1 litre ) fitted, was going downhill (on the M18 were it joins the A1 before Donny) and there was a hell of a tail wind.

I was actually very scared.....

Funnily enough I once had an indicated 100MPH/160km/h out of a Seat Marbella in Tenerife - 4 up! :D

Oh that's much more impressive than the 1000MPH I normally think about! :D

My old Fiat 127 1300GT rev counter sat at 500 when the engine was off

That was the rust per minute gauge you were looking at

I once broke 140km/h in the Laurel taxi. Took ages - once you get to about 120km/h it hits an aerodynamic brick wall. You sit there with the pedal to the floor squinting at the speedo needle as it slowly nudges up the little lines, counting each km/h as it comes whilst the overspeed chime goes "bing bong". Can't wait to start using it again!

I'm not really that bothered about top speed as I don't tend to be on the motorway that often. Speeding on them round here is tempting fate anyway, don't know why anyone bothers. On the times when I used the motorway to go to work, I'd only be going up the M1 two junctions and on average I would see 2 marked and maybe 1-2 obvious unmarked cars just for that. Might as well not bother, at least until you get on the M62 (where there never seems to be any).

I Took to Germany one year in about 2010. As you can see i used to like driving it spiritedly

It was freezing!

On the way back and with the weather somewhat better I held it at an indicated 130mph (so 120?) for about 10 mins on a quiet stretch of autobahn. It wasnt quite flat out as i was conscious not to blow the engine on a 20 year old merc with no service history on the German/Dutch border with a lot of driving still to do. I do have a photo taken from the passenger seat of the speedo at our Vmax  but i cant find it. Think its on my ex wifes hard drive. It did start to make some poorly noises as we made our way around the m25 but it turned out it was the exhaust system breaking up. IIRC It averaged 23mpg over the whole trip, but given my driving i thought that was pretty decent.

Whilst we were over there my wife at the time crashed it into a gate post on a farm track. That we are no longer married has no connection to this 😂

I did this once or twice in my old S13 200SX

it was an actual 157mph as it was hitting the rev limiter and wouldn't go any quicker,  not bad for a home modified CA18DET which didn't ruin its bottom end shells.

Probably 25 years ago now thinking about it and have never been as quick in a car since, my old Hayabusa would show over 200mph flat out in top, it was only doing around 180mph in reality.

1980’s Vauxhalls:

1200 Nova indicated 120 on the clock down Haldon Hill on the A38 near Exeter

1300 Cavalier, again 120 indicated with 4 on board. No rev counter in the Cav but you knew when to change up as the dashboard started bouncing up and down.

Vauxhall certainly made very willing, free reving engines back then, and company cars were always the fastest.

It was a long time ago and I can't prove it but i once saw an indicated 92 from a  courtesy ac70 when I took my Cobra back to the dealer for a service.

I had a mk2 Golf GTi well off the clock - it was not working correctly, obviously.  resetting the trip/mpg data showed an average speed of around 115, which seems possible.

I've had a 2CV off the clock tailgating a Volvo estate on a downhill section of the M8. My mate who was following in his Golf said afterwards he was doing 85 to keep up.

I've had 90 on an Iveco 7.5 tonner with an L322 on the back, on the A9 hill down into Inverness. Knock it into neutral at the top and you get the satisfying "overspeed" on the dash 😆
