I was pretty certain so I didn't want to spoil it but once revealed I can fit the answer to my vague cryptic clues and proclaim how great I am, even if I am wrong 😀

I knew you were really Donald Trump? That's his MO

Congratulations to @MrBiscuits, the car was within spitting distance of his Alma mater. Kev, I didn't see much of Southampton, but you were right all along: much nicer than Portsmouth.

Same to @wesacosa and @Dyslexic Viking who guessed correctly.

Sitrep: still grinning from ear to ear. Man fitted 1.6 VW engine to a Favorit and hilarity ensued.

@Yoss kindly interrupted his postal rounds to do the 'customer handover' and I got to see his lovely Mk1 Favorit. Transaction painless and swift, would be late to arrive again 14/10.

Congratulations .I was only wondering the other day who got that, should have maybe guessed as I know you were admirer

I'm sure your keen* to know the cryptic clues

Billy Ocean for the colour, Carribbean (Qu)Green and Southampton's most famous* export, Craig David.  My ex was from Southampton but nobody wants to see a picture of her

What a superb vehicle.  Has anybody called dibs yet? I would very much like to try this.

Vlak? I hope you’re collecting this:

I've no idea what the thread title means but Vlak, or derivatives of, means train so this makes sense.

Obviously I couldn't comment before as I didn't want to spoil the big reveal. But that is hellfire! Known locally as Brejlovec which simply means goggles which I don't need to explain.

The 754 is the best variant too as it still has the original CKD engine. CKD built all the diesel locos during communist times, whilst Škoda built all the electrics.

Recently they seem to have given a fair few of them heavy overhauls at ZOS Vrutky in Slovakia and every one comes out a different colour. The one above is one of those. It has added a real splash if colour to the scene.

I got the Billy Ocean reference but didn't realise that was Craig David, but that does make sense.

It's worse than it looks, honestly! They are mostly just stereo wires and you can't see them from a normal sitting position.

I mean it looks worse than it is! Which is the complete opposite of what I just said.

Czech and Slovak have some differences and similarities, and as you say I saw Vlak in there and guessed it was about a train ride to collect the car lol.

I’ve since asked a grown up, my mrs, and she said ‘it doesn’t make sense, they’re collecting clothing fibre?’… took me a while to get to the obvious answer: collection thread 😂

Yoss, it's one of your cars. I'm sure it'll be righter than a right thing. Everyone on here knows the lengths you go to. Put it this way, I'd defo buy a car off you!

Well that's very nice of you to say so. I do my best. I do bodge things if I think it will work of course, but I'm happy to disclose said bodges on here for all to see.

I'm sorry I can't sell you any more cars, I'm down to the three which is the perfect number for here - two in the drive and one in the garage.

I honestly think this was a better car than the ones I have left with the extra power and power steering makes it a perfect daily driver. But Mrs Yoss wanted her Up! and I like blue Favorit as it's a mk1, so it is a proper Škoda, no VW input at all. And I've owned the Triumph nearly 30 years so that's not going anywhere, I'm going to be buried in that, so that just left the green Favorit.

I'm pleased @grogee took it as I should to still be able to see it from afar. I'm looking forward to a head to head comparison with the Maestro. The Fav is newer but it was a dated design even when released. They had the design ready to go in 1983 but the Czechoslovakian government wouldn't let them build it until 1987 so the two are very much from the same era.

Well done and bought Grogee..... I'd drooled over this but I'm way over my quota already so gf played voice of reason sadly.

Best of luck with it - looking forward to updates.

That's interesting @Yoss, and there are a lot of similarities between the two, not least the body style - origami folded, sharp creases, five door hatchback.

We know BLARG very much put the Mk1 Golf through its photocopier, and it's likely Skoda smuggled one over the border as well.

It would be interesting to road test an A-series 'Stro next to the bASe Favorit, there must have been loads of people trying to choose between the two particularly when Rover was flogging bargain-basement Maestros when the R8 was available.

FWIW, here are my thoughts - bear in mind this is warts and all, 30+ years after they left the factory.

- Czechslovakia wins for squeaks and rattles. As in, there are flippin LOADS. Prime example is the wipers: on request to clean the screen, they creaked and groaned in a very Communist way - but reluctantly did the job.

There is a wheel balance issue on the Favorit, so there's an amusing cacophany of baggy trim while cruising.

The Maestro has plenty of its own but they're not as bad, and mine has the one-piece dash fitted after about 85. I would guess NVH was in its infancy at ARG but was simply not considered inside the Czech plant.

- Czechslovakia also wins in a sprint. The transplanted 1.6 125bhp is very torquey, even more muscular than the 115bhp O-series.

I do have a theory I can improve mid-range torque on the Fav by adding a longer intake to the throttle body. So I'm looking into 65mm silicone bends & tubes etc to make a longer tract.

Maestro wins for interior perceived quality. Not surprisingly, better materials were available to the Western world and even though VW tried to sprinkle some fairy dust on the Ph2 Favorit, there are too many things that are slightly 'Chernobyl' to the touch in the Skoda.

Maestro wins ride and handling, but the Fav has better steering thanks to the PAS fitted to it. The Fav would probably be at home on a track but it's too low and stiff for UK roads (I will investigate adjustment).

The Favorit has much, much better brakes. The only fly in the ointment is a long pedal travel, probably due to the RHD -> LHD conversion bar that operates the master cylinder on the left side. That means I can't heel & toe as I'd like, although I may be able to adjust the pedals to help with this.

The Maestro is probably a bit more practical with a bigger boot and more rear seat space, but I suspect it's actually slightly longer in external dimensions too.

The suspension is definitely too stiff. I suspect some of the rattles would dissappear if the suspension was softer too. The shocks are supposed to be height adjustable in situ with a C spanner. I tried raising it a bit. The nearside rear moved easily but the offside wouldn't budge so I suspect you'd have to take it off and release the tension from the spring to do it.

What it really needs is anti roll bars from a later Felicia. My late Felicia handled just as well but with sensible spring rates.  You'd need the Felicia front subframe which has all the extra holes in it but it would definitely be the best way to go.

The door trims are the easiest to remove that I've ever seen. Once you've undone the window winder and door handle there are just two self tappers on the rear edge and it just lifts out. This is great for quick and easy access to the innards but I suspect it adds to the rattles.

The wipers do need a good amount of lubrication to work properly. Yours are slightly longer than mine. I have 19" and yours are 20. I have room for the longer ones but I suspect the motor struggles with the extra friction so I've left them alone.

With the brakes, the long pedal is just something to do with the conversion i think. The brakes on mine are much firmer initially but no where near as effective. You can also lock the standard brakes up quite easily whereas I never did with yours. There's no ABS like I had on the Felicia just much bigger discs. I bled them once when I changed the rear pads but it was a while ago. That might help. Or it might not.

I hope you'll enjoy it. I must admit once I'd got used to the power I just enjoyed the flexibility. It will pick up from walking pace in third gear and carry on up to any speed you want making town driving a doddle.
