So, I sold my Grand Cherokee at the weekend as I've got too many cars.

Naturally as I'm an idiot there's no prizes for guessing what happened next. I'll let this message sum things up.

I'd honestly thought he'd tell me to bugger off and kinda made the offer as an "I really don't need it but at least I tried" kind of thing.

Ah well, here goes nothing.

Collection this evening.

It is of course broken so the journey home will be a slow one👌

It won't rev above 2000rpm.

Also, I've not bought a car since the Focus in September 2023. This is not normal for me 😳

You probably won't want to buy another until 2033 after this one. 😂

You should get there reasonably quickly, BMW's are quite quick aren't they?

Some precision went into inflicting that dent. Impressive.

That is not a dent it is a modification that reduces drag.

So what's wrong with it (apart from the massive dent) and what's the plan?

Think the dented one is an E39 innit?

So yes, I have indeed bought a 2005 (Facelift) BMW 730d.

It was advertised as spares or repairs due to it not wanting to rev over 2000rpm.

As stated I am an idiot so naturally I thought buying this was a good idea.

It has various codes stored for.

Glow plugs and controller - all replaced in the last couple of years.

DPF related codes - this has been removed and cleaned in the last year.

Throttle actuator - this has also been replaced.

So, this should be an easy* fix.

We got up to speed eventually by manually shifting it to keep the revs low.

My scanner reckons it last regenned 500km ago.

IMG20250320194034.jpg.68f64fd9feb2f4f9fa00d0460950ea6c.jpg

And it looks like it's not trying to regen at present.

HOWEVER, the presence of the glow plug and throttle codes wouldn't allow it to regen at present anyway.

Stay tuned as I battle my way through this...

remove dpf, see if it will rev, if yes map out dpf and get mot done by Labrador puppy in dodgy scheme garage

Can you see the % of full the DPF  is? If it's totally rammed I'm pretty sure it'll need to be cleaned before it'll regen.

I don't think glow plug codes would stop it regening they seem to be mandatory codes on most old diesels.

E65, nice one. Personally I wouldn't have a 730d for pretty much the reasons above. However if you need any help with anything else on that car let me know. Parts are dirt cheap for them since so many of them are getting broken by people now.

Well this going to be a epic win, or an extended narrative of financial heartbreak and a worn out parts cannon. Great cars these. I remember my first drive in one, collect from Banbury, deliver to Warwick. I finally figured out how to change the radio station to Radio1 just as I pulled into the carpark 😁

I am surprised you bought an elderly BMW considering the E61 you had.

I hope you sort it with minimal outlay.

Ok, so let's get stuck in to this. First off I swapped the MAF out for a new one. It was original and unplugging it last night made a bit of difference. It didn't cure the issue funnily enough but at £20 it was worth a try.

I poked and prodded various things whilst in the engine bay and found nothing untoward.

Back inside I reset the codes and tried to force it to do a regen. Sadly it wouldn't as although the glowpligs and throttle actuator codes went it had the following codes still present.

IMG20250321142551.jpg.e797243967e3bca0e95e1998bfb5d4b7.jpg

It also has what seems to be very high back pressure in the exhaust according to this which seems to point to a fucked dpf againIMG20250321142551.jpg.e797243967e3bca0e95e1998bfb5d4b7.jpg

I wonder if when the glow plugs and throttle actuator were replaced the codes weren't cleared and that has prevented it from regening the dpf?

At this point I went underneath to suss out removing the dpf to get a replacement. I need to work out what's what as I'm not sure what I'm looking at, I'll come back to you in that when I've done my homework.

So, I gave it a clean.

Before...

It's wearing its miles pretty well. Apart from a scab on a rear arch it's not too bad. In fact it's probably got the best bodywork of anything on the driveway at the moment 😳
