Certainly would have a good deal of rust.

Probably no inner front wings or A posts left by then (or id assume so by the amount of them i've welded up over the years)

Don't swear at us like that!

(I think we've been trying to avoid it; and his lime green Capri.)

Absolutely! Reminds me initially of DI Jack Frost who drove what would have been a 12 or so year old 240 estate, and then Jonathan Creek.

For me, TV characters with shite cars is very contrived.

TV characters with shit cars on the other hand, tells me much more about the character.

DI Frost has a Cavalier, Sierra, Volvo 240 and latterly a MK3 Astra Estate. All at the bottom of their curves at the time.

Of course, we can't forget Peter Falk in Columbo who had his Peugeot 403 Cabriolet for so long it went from a shit old wreck to an endearing classic!

The last car DI Frost had was a Mk3 Mondeo estate which was only about 5 or 6 years old at the time. When did he have the Cavalier? IIRC there were 2 different 240s used, a blue one then a silver one

He had a MK2 Cavalier in the first couple of episodes but he crashed it into a ditch and got the Sierra.

There was only '1' 240, A467NRN but that was replaced with a post 1986 model made to look like the same one (it made my teeth itch because the grille was wrong for a 1982-86 model).

He didn't have much luck with cars did he, crashed a Cavalier into a ditch, reversed the Sierra into a Jaguar, wrote the Sierra off in a collision with a skip and in the last episode was in a car crash on his wedding day

OTOH he did "run into" an old flame in one episode, who lent him her Bentley for a while!

That was the one where the Sierra got written off IIRC, he clipped her Bentley and hit the skip

Don't forget he did own a Vauxhall PB Velox in one episode

James Bolam in a shite Vauxhall HA van in the Beiderbecke Affair.

Seven years old when the series started in 1985.  A 67-plate Combo might* look a bit different...

I thought that was Barry from Auf Wiedersehen Pet 😆. Oz had the Zodiac,Wayne had the LHD 5 series. Ally Fraser had a Jag, Nev had a W124 later on, and Barry got a Bentley!

Barry had a HA van in a later series of AFP, partly set in the UK, and also in Spain. This was broadcast in 86 or 87, and predates the remake from the early 00s, where Barry has made good and is ‘considerably richer than you’.

Ally Fraser asks Dennis to get the gang back together, and they do up his villa in Spain and a country house over here. Barry has given up on his crappy old bike (presumably an BSA as the character sounds like he is from Small Heath) and now has an equally crappy Bedford van.

Was amazed to hear Tim Spall speaking in real life a few years later, he is really well spoken in real life!

The Likely Lads film sees Bob’s Viva replaced with a Chevette, on an N plate so a very very early one, possibly from Vauxhall in a slightly ironic bit of product placement!

Bob ends up driving in into the back of (his) caravan in a usual instance of hapless malarkey. It’s worth watching, it features Vicki Michelle as a hitchhiker Bob and Terry pick up in said Chevette.

What about Christopher Fairbank (Moxey)? He's quite a  Luvvie, despite the characters he usually plays.Gary Holton(Wayne) died tragically during the making of that second series, and the scenes had to be worked carefully, with "him" being seen from behind sometimes. In the third series, didn't Barry have a Russian bird and a business exporting Ladas?

Didn't Barry's bike go up in flames and burn down the hut in the final episode of series 1? Obviously not in real life as Tim Spall allegedly bought it when filming finished. The reg of his HA (AEA 735T) was a fake plate but it's now been issued to a replica van.

On a similar theme, has anyone mentioned Richard Bucket's Rover 200 from Keeping Up Appearances? That's also a fake plate that became real so the blue 200 currently registered D541 EFL is not the one from the show.

I heard Timothy Spall sold the bike to a friend after falling off it, but someone then nicked it from the friend's garden & it was never recovered.

In a rather tonally different example from Ashes to Ashes, I’m surprised Father Ted’s blue 1981 Cortina hasn’t got a mention yet…

“He’s puncturing the tyres, Ted”

I’m not sure if these have quite attained  'endearing classic' status just yet, but were probably at peak ‘unfashionable-ness’ in the Mid-‘90s, so at the time very much in line with the ‘crap old car for perpetually downtrodden character ’ trope.

In the first series Ted drove an early looking Mk3 Escort.  The series has the odd bit of chod about, especially when a fair about of cars on Irish roads were still second hand imports.

I remember a Rover 200 they had been given for a raffle but Ted wrecked it trying to tap out a dent. Also there was an Austin A55 van driven by Tom the nutter, ( well even more of a nutter than the rest of them) .

Think there were was a ‘death count’ of two Rover 200s in that episode…

Just rewatched the first episode of A Touch of Frost and the Sierra is in it, so I'm wondering if the Cavalier wasn't actually his
