Banger auctions. Do you still attend?

I can honestly say I haven't crossed the threshold of a car auction for nearly two years. They used to be part of my weekly routine and I saw it as good fun and an easy way to make a few quid every now and again. In todays world with Ebay and the like I can get my cheap car fix from the comfort of my own home but I kind of miss the old days of lobbing my hand up and driving away 5 mins later.

His last one reminded me of a colossal mix up that occurred whilst at the Co Op.

We had a service with WHSmith who supplied our magazines and papers whereby you could get publications on subscription if it was a bit odd or mega obscure.

Anyway, a very well to do and prudish woman subscribed to this high-brow literary magazine called Forte-Plus or something like that. Clearly the supplier had a warped sense of humour or he was ignorant of French intonation.

He sent a MILF mag through instead.

A car auction place opened not so long ago in Birkenhead, the turn out was piss poor tbh.

1 Vauxhall vectra, 2 mondeo's (one with the complimentary cellotape bumper) and a Pug 106.

lol

many years ago, i used to deliver bundles of papers by car to uni departments, colleges, dole office, nursing homes, schools and far flung delivery staff etc.

i would make up the bundles from a list, surprised me how many of those 'milf mags' they sold, and to who.

p.s. Brewer got false teeth, or so just sparkly ones?

He actually looks better!

I used to go to Ellesmere Port auctions, but memories of standing round as the cold wind blasted through the shed with a plastic cup with a drop of 'tea' in it isn't a good memory. Also a bit worried that raising my hand anywhere above my beltline might win me a '93 Citroen Xantia being pushed through the shed.

Nope, not been to an auction in years. Used to be really good though - I remember fifteen years ago Stoodley auctions in Manc being full of old Mk2 Granadas, Mk1 R5s, Triumph Acclaims and other choice tat.

Going to see a load of ropey Mondeos and the like doesn't do much for me.

used to go to the Chester auctions regulary a few years ago.

I remember once (about 2001) a very tatty, what looked like a 'barn find' Vauxhall Victor going through, they couldnt get it to start and think ended up pushing it through in the end. Nobody bid on it!.

I also remember a Vauxhall Belmont going through for a tenner!

Not been for a while though as the general crap like that doesnt seem to filter through anymore.

You won't be again for a while either chief, it shut a bit back. It was never the same as it was in the good old DMA days anyhow.

Once Pingu (see E. Port Motor Auctions) took it on after DMA went under it lost it's magic.

Biased because I worked there (DMA) but we had some seriously cheap runners out of that place, including a Lada Riva 1500 for a five spot all in.

Bought that 318is from the legendary Tuebrook in January, but other than that, and the odd trip to Carr Mill I don't do much auction chod nowadays.

Wilson's Auctions at Newtownabbey is the "posh" auction round here, and is a very impressive place. Top caff too. I go there a few times a year with my Mum, as she is a bit of a petrolhead. That said, I have to keep an eye on her as she nearly bought a Rover 800 Coupe once. Mum is not very tall, and couldn't really drive an 800 coop.

The shite auction is in Ballyclare, and boy do they have some CRAP. They'd had a 2CV lying for literally years outside, and a mate of mine got to hear about and was keen. We went to look at it the afternoon before the auction, and good enough the fella from the auctioneers opened it up. I don't really know what happened (maybe Dolly will) but when my 16stone mate got in in the whole ARSE of the car just sort of broke!!

Mrs Ash's ex husband bought a 626 coupe there, three wheeltrims and a wrinkle in the rear quarterpanel as wide as the River Lagan. The thing had clearly gone asswards into a kerb. I remember saying to her (then) husband at the time "Davy, get rid of that, it's a fucking deathtrap"

"You sure, Andy? Seems OK to me"

"Davy, look at that tyre, and the angle of the wheel"

"Oh...."

Great days. The shitefest auction is still going strong.

Are there any decent ones around the NW Billy?

Queensferry used to be pretty good but not been in a while. Forget E.Port, waste of time for cheap stuff.

Prees Heath by Whitchurch (near to the Midway/Raven truck stops) is supposed to be very good, but I was talking to a couple at Cholmondeley who worked there and they said punters can't open the bonnets on cars now 'because it's against Health & Safety'.

Fuck that for a caper, it must make it open season for all the K-sealed shite to be driven through.

I'll do a recce up there one day and see what it's like though.

Im not sure if Olymipa still operate in Preston certainly it seems to have turned into a Enterprise Car Hire / Hot Tub sales / second hand car sales place. But it was a regular Thursday night haunt of mine on a Thursday night bidding for some truly awful shite.

These days I get my shite fix on eBay.

The one local to me is Blackbushe, but I think they dont sell much shite, I did once see a MKII Transit in their compound for auction lots though. Anyone been? Im sure at least one of you has.

I used to go to Moseley Rd banger auctions in Birmingham pretty much every week, just for the crack. Never bought anything but it was a great place to spot old chod while eating a dodgy burger. All the local car dealers sent their unsalable part-ex's through just to dispose of them. Many cars which didnt get sold simply got scrapped.

There were a few very nice motors to choose from, you just had to hunt them down. It was great fun!

Because of the high price of scrap 99% of the shit that would have ended up at auction now gets fragged meaning the days of the £40 auction special are now sadly over.

I used to deliver cars to Prees Heath and it seems like a nice place, the prices the cars go for seem pretty cheap, too. Its all motor traders there so anything that requires a little work such as a dent or scrape goes begging. Lots of ex- motorbility cars end up there, low milage, fully serviced but full of dents, full of dog hairs e.t.c.. Id love to go there with 2k to spend and get an uber bargain, but I dont have 2k!

Prees have two days, Tim. One for traders and one for Joe Public. Any public stuff gets a one hour warranty on major faults, trade stuff gets fuck all.

On a serious note does anyone fancy an A.S meet there one evening? Get there handy, slice of tea at The Raven or Midway then an hour or so having a shufty at the auctions perhaps?

That doesnt sound like a bad idea! That uber shite garage is directly opposite, too.

Oh aye, he's got loads of our sort of stuff in there. 50s/60s/70 British shite and the odd Yank from memory?

Car auction meet:

Styrene cup of dishwater, smoke filled hall, ropey fuckers trying to sell you shagged out old bangers away from the block , the punters with Parker's Guide under their arm trying desperately to look cool and worldly (but they might as well write MUG ME in marker pen on their foreheads) and bids bouncing off the walls.

What's not to like? 8)

I haven't been to my local banger auction for a few years. Some traders would buy from BCA Peterborough on the Monday then put the cars in Bourne on the Tuesday.Hmmm, might aswell go to BCA then.

As LankyTim said not many 50 quiders go to auction anymore.Having said that the really big dealerships like Bristol Street,Inchcape,Lookers and Pendragon have contracts with BCA and Manhiem so everything goes to auction.Even at 50 quid the buyers fee at BCA is 37 pounds though.

Last year I bought a Civic for 87 sheets out the door then sold it the next day for one and a half so bangers are about in the large auction groups.

Just by coincidence had a spare hour this afternoon so I was able to have a look at BCA Walsll, hoping to see if the place was any good for a large estate, but to my surprise it was full of small and medium newish cars from Renault retail, but looking too good to be unwanted part-exes. There were some good buys if you wanted a modern Clio, Golf or similar.

But the banger auction still seems to be thriving. More of Autoshite interest was a motley collection from CC Trade Sales, but unfortunately I couldn't stay long enough to see them go through :( At one end of the scale was a scruffy Skoda Favorit and an even scruffier Cavalier, up to an audi RS6 and a 1993 Bentley Turbo R with full Bentley history ( up to 8 years ago :( ) plating peeling off the wheels and an unknown mileage  I think that the Autoshite Rosette though would gave gone to a very sorry-looking H reg Saab 900 but still with original Ace Kensington number plates and transfer on thr bootlid; I bet that one could tell a story. So who are CC Trade Sales then, with such a vast number (over 130) of completely unprepared wrecks, I've never herad of them before.

I had a mate who had a contract with Walsall auctions to remove any unsold chod. There used to be a branch of EMR across the road and he'd use any running scrappers to push any non-runners over the road and onto the weighbridge. I think he did this once a month and scrapped stacks of cars. It was back when cars were getting £15 each.

I used to go to the local auction every Tuesday night. I picked up some right gems from there over the years - Mk1 Golf (£80), Renault 25 V6 (£120), Lancia Prisma (£80), Lancia HPE (£150), Seat Malaga (£50), Talbot Sunbeam 1.0 LE (£10), Granada Ghia X auto (£25). All were MoT'd apart from the Sunbeam. I'm still kicking myself for missing out on a crusty Sunbeam 1.6 GLS which also sold for a tenner.

Haven't been for years though - last time I did go the cheap stuff was all being bought up by Eastern Europeans for more than I was prepared to pay.

My dad used to buy his cars from auctions. I went down when he bought a Peugeot 104 for 50 quid. You could actually sit in the cars, which I loved at the time.

Prees Heath isn't bad, bought a couple of shitters from there. First off was when i was living in Aylebury and shagging a bird in St.Asaph. Dropped in on the way back, bought an old square rigger 525i and drove it home - I left my appalling rusty damp dog ratfucked A reg Sierra there. It went through the auction a day or so later and made £45 after fees. :D

Bawtry auctions is the famous one for buying rubbish. Had plenty of snot out of there in the past. You see some amazing species there as well, grunting inbreds with fat wife and 3/4 sportswear clad little bastards. It's worth going just to observe this wildlife.

The big Mannheim/BCA places are a waste of time now because the fees are so extortionate. A £400 banger will be almost £650 out of the door and Mannheim charge you £25 plus VAT to send the fucking logbook to DVLA. Robbing cuntz.

As a teenager I used to go to Leominster Car Auctions on the Hereford/Shropshire border, a superb banger auction with all sorts of junk.

I remember bidding on all sorts, £50 Mk3 Cortinas and RWD Escorts when they were just worn out junk, not iconic classics as they are now. I got a C reg Visa GTi for £350, (it would be been about 7 years old), unfortunately the insurers wouldn't cover it so it went back in the next week.

Often the best vehicles would be the 3 year old police Cavaliers with 100k on the clock, so you can guess what the rest was like. The one I do regret not getting was a mint looking Renault 16, out of storage with no MOT, which went for something like £70.

The local scrapyard gave up the contract to pick up the unsold leftovers, they were so crappy!

Only one I go to now is a very rural one in West Wales held every month, it grew out of a monthly farm machinery sale, the last car I actually bought was a V reg Mondeo for £320 two years ago when I needed an old smoker.
