Late registration madness

Thinking back to my time in Edinburgh circa 2003/4 I used to see some strange things out and about, springing to mind are

 

- T plate mk3 Fiesta. I guess this was the 'Classic' version that lingered on between launch of the mk4 and the Ka. Must have stayed unregistered a couple of years.

- G plate mk5 Escort. What I think must have happened here was the car was new with a dateless or Select mark and on re-registration was given a new identity from the wrong (earlier) part of 1990.

- 51 plate Honda Accord (3rd generation). No idea what went on here. These would normally be C to G plate or thereabouts.

 

Incidentally there has been the odd occasion where someone's squirrelled a coach away for 'future use' or some other reason. This thing dates from about 1975 but hung around mothballed till the late 1980s:

Looks restorable? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't!

I remember seeing a 51 plate Citroen Xantia and being convinced it was about to be used in some sort of crime and wearing fake plates for it.... turns out there's a handful of them around.

Seem to recall a 51 plate red citroen 2cv I happened across on an E bay visit last week. It looked sunbleached/ LHD so presumably some sort of anomaly from being imported- though arnt imports usually given a plate relevant to apporx year of manufacture?

I've seen an E-prefix MGB (registration something like Ennn WTT) at two (if not more) Pride of Longbridge events a few years ago. No pics, sorry - but I bet someone somewhere who was at the events must have some.

I've spotted a couple of Volvo V40s on a 54 plate: Not surprising, since the last year of production was 2004, and old and new Volvo models do overlap. However, I'm sure that I've also seen an 05 plated V40 (police - on Road Wars -Does that count????). I reckon that fleets such as the police stockpile cars due to discounts from buying in bulk(?)

 

There's currently a white 2005 54 reg Volvo V40 for sale on Auto Trader's website. I guess it could be ex police as it's white!

Used to see that Honda at Inverkeithing train station for a while some time back... Silver/light gold in colour & always in need of a good wash!

used to know someone with a N reg morris minor.it had been built in 1974 from spare parts and a new body shell.

Cossack yes, but I'm sure I keep occasionally spotting a white Samara that then vanishes out of sight (always at night time..) and I'm sure it was an 05 plate. I might need help though..

Right, been bloody ill today so off work :evil: I took the opportunity to sort out some files on my computer and came across these 2. Enjoy:

I heard that the Metro was an import from Ireland, once re-reg'd back here, the DVLA cocked up and gave the car a new plate instead of an age-related plate. It doesnt show up on the DVLA but does come as a 'ROVER' on the RAC database. Bean cans now?

 

The Merc still shows up though, possibly an import.

That 56 Plate Rover Metrundred is astonishing. Topical too.

 

Incredibly tonight, as I drove home from work, I was passed by a silvery bronze Rover 100 on a '99T, I was doing 75ish and he came past like I was going backwards. T'was the first Mover Retro I've seen in a long time.

My Atra GTE was an NIrish import - built in 1990, it came to the UK and was given a K plate (current at the time). To confuse matters (or possibly to stop people asking questions) it was then given a "vanity" NI plate - KIW7667 or something despite remaining in the UK.

I remember seeing the T-reg one here and thought it was odd but the 56 just looks so wrong - I bet it attracted a lot of unwanted attention from the rozzers.

NI Plates are great in Britain on rare cars, as people have no idea what age the car is. My aunt has one on her Vel Satis (as it came from here) and it properly pisses people off that they don't know what year the car is.

Yeah, NI plates are a definite sign that the vehicle in question is always the oldest it could possibly be, or something like a 13 year old Lexus with 'gold' badging that was picked up at an auction for about £600.

In the inflationary late 70's many lorries were bought and stored - unregistered.

 

This belongs to a mate:

Fitted with a Gardner 180 and Fuller 9 speed. No power steering - just a steering wheel the size of a dustbin lid -

 

Built in 1978 and bought by Fordhouses Transport who never actually used it but put it into storage. Cost in 1978 was £11,000, I think.

 

Fordhouses subsequently ceased trading and the Guy was bought by Thomas Ingles Transport of Wolverhampton. They registered the truck in 1985 (hence the "B" plate), fitted the sleeper conversion, and used it until 1989 when they too ceased trading.

 

There was also a "Truck and Driver" feature on the lorry in September 1986. The driver of the lorry had previously been driving a Scania 111 - one wonders how much he must've annoyed the boss to have been put in this lorry!!

 

The lorry was then used by Jim Horn in his business until 1992 when it was bought by Richard Stanier.

Ashmicro, as Northern Ireland is part of the UK, surely the registration system comes under the DVLA in Swansea, or is there a seperate system operated in NI? I ask as I'm always seeing (older admittedly) cars for sale in NI on Ebay with registrations from across the Irish Sea. If I moved to Belfast, would I have to get my cars reregistered?

Not sure quite how it works but NI is covered by the DVLNI rather than Swansea. I'm pretty sure you can keep the UK plates if you export a vehicle to NI and presumably it is registered with the DVLNI as an import using the existing reg - certainly the UK reg vehicles with NI owners I've seen show as exported on the DVLA system. Similar things appear to happen if an NI vehicle comes to the mainland and keeps its reg.

Quicksilver is right. It's classed as the DVLNI, but as we're part of the UK, there's no fees for "importing" a car. I've brought quite a few over from the mainland and basically you're given the option of putting an NI plate on it, for free, but I never do. It's the same when taking a car over there.

The point I was making is that people say "from NI to UK". Does anyone here have a passport? What does it say on the front cover?

 

DVLNI is County Hall, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry. It has an excellent computer system, which I was involved in installing. We thought it was massively over specified at the time, but it seems to have been the right thing to do, as they rarely lose stuff.

 

The registration number system here is different as it started before the partition of Ireland. The prefixes where done in alphabetical order for counties, and included the letter I for Ireland. Hence, County Antrim numbers were IA, county Armagh was IB and so on. NI's two cities at the time were OI for Belfast and UI for Londonderry. IW is County Londonderry. The Belfast OI came about as no-one could agree whether Belfast is in County Antrim, or County Down. People still argue about that!

I once saw a 1982 X-reg Volvo 760 GLE. Presumably, it was originally registered and used by Volvo Concessionaires Limited in the months leading up to the model's official UK launch.

Yep, I've seen an X-reg 760 as well (a saloon, as the estates weren't launched until 1984). I've seen a couple of L-reg 240 Estates as well, but never as late as M-reg. Imagine that being sold against the 850 at the same time(!)

 

L reg 240 would be a Torslander
