Fugly steering wheels

Besides the Tesla and a couple of the moderns, I think everything in here looks great - especially the couple of asymmetric wheels!

I think the reason these not round wheels are so popular is that nowadays nobody uses a steering wheel as an actual wheel. The generally accepted method of roughly aiming a car these days  seems to be with the heel of one hand at 2 or 10 o clock and just rely on the friction between the fist of ham and the leather to birl the thing round.
Keeps the other hand free for the phone I guess....

How is that possibly safe?  Or indeed legal? Seems bizarre to me - you can't feed the wheel etc.  I wouldn't fancy using that on miles of twisty mountain road.

Seems to occupy the 'weird zone' of suspended disbelief parts of the interweb occupy these days.

This monstrosity in a non-Mulliner spec Bentley Continental, made worse with the 2-tone colour way:

By paying a King's ransom upgrading to Mulliner spec or Speed/Supersports models you got this. Although an improvement it's still not befitting a £150k+ car:

Used Bentley Continental cars | 6.0 W12 GT Speed Auto 4WD Euro 5 2dr | Red

I saw that and thought of this.

Yep, I always thought this quite a good idea, it surely makes sense for the steering wheel controls to remain stationary, rather than finding everything suddenly upside down and back-to-front while manoeuvring, I think it was also supposed to be safer in an accident for the airbag to 'launch' from a fixed position.

Kind of a shame it never caught on, and now even Citroen themselves seem to have abandoned it.

Actually, seems the idea may have been revived, on the Bugatti Tourbillon.

Quite funny that something what that will undoubtedly be heralded as a groundbreaking innovation on a multi-million pound hypercar can be traced to a 20 year old Citroen hatchback.

Actually,  just noticed on the Bugatti most of the controls still rotate with the wheel, so not even as well resolved!

Early Mk3 Cavalier. I was five when my dad test drove one and even then the badge placement made my teeth itch. Why put it there?

Those didn’t have airbags. Air bag equipped wheel was properly fugly.

I have two thirty-somethings in the house at the moment, both are very bright and well-educated, but the amount of bollox ideas/theories about stuff that they offer in conversation is amazing. Mostly it's YouTube stuff e.g. totally crap camper conversions on a PinzGauer (mind you - there was one of those at the local campsite last week) but a lot of it is WOW! Amazing! (i.e. wheel reinvented)

This Buttonfest of a steering wheel is from the 1985 Pontiac 6000 STE.

This 1989 Pontic Grand Prix had even bigger buttons!
