Selling crap to the VW crowd for more than it's worth

Just looking at this:

http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.c ... 388&page=1

And while I like it a lot, I'm thinking about buying a VW and spending 50 quid on it to quadruple to the price to appeal to same crowd. Does anyone have suggestions. I was thinking about buying one of these for 300 - 400 quid

But a bit stuck on what to do next? I've got some old patterned lino to 'line' the roof with (which I haven't seen done yet), and planning on hammering out some old aluminium plates (moon wheels) which is a start.

Posted

I bought an old roofrack off the 'bay a while back for £3.20. Stuck it back on a few weeks ago, describing it as 'Retro ratlook vw' etc etc & got £54 for it!

Think I'll go down the car boot sale looking for some more...

That does seem to be the typical RR For Sale thread though.

Its full of OMG thats really cool, wud look gr8 with banded wheels / hit with sticks / scenewhored a bit more etc but despite all the 'enthusiasm' isn't actually selling.

Not that I'm knocking RR you understand as I still quite like it but an awful lot of threads do seem to go in that direction.

old VW + paint stripper + rust = pound notes

i must admit id enjoy owning a fake police car just to annoy my neighbours when its parked outside their house, but not going to spend 1.5K for the pleasure

Quite a handsome beast that Audi, minus the police car stuff.

Posted

To be fair, I reckon that Audi could be up for that price without the Polizei markings.

I'm also confused?

What is it exactly we are meant to be dissing here? The 'Polizei' Audi isn't exactly ratlook - or even 'scene'. Are we on AS meant to be against anyone who does anything to their cars apart from run them into the ground?

In that case - why am I here? I may not agree with the 'rust and old tat' theme, but I am all for modding cars, improving, adapting and just enjoying them!

I do think the RR bashing should stop. There are a few ratlook/ VW scene people on there, but there are also a wide variety of other genres too.

EG,

American classic, american modified, Japanese classics, Bososoku, shakotan, Lowriders, British sports cars, etc etc.

Seen as you bring it up PM, here's my take on it. I was on RR before I was on here, but feel far more at home here than on there. I am not comfortable at all with the silly rules RR has, for that reason I don't post much on there any more. I find it hard to believe I am the only one too. I also feel it's increasingly a 'pretty picture' forum, and I prefer a place with a bit more substance.

We have been here before though, haven't we?

Fair points, not trying to say anything against AS. I like the fact you can speak your mind here, and the fact that we can have normal discussions without some dictator-like admin/mod deleting anything that doesn't 'fit'.

The only thing I'm whinging about is RR members being pigeon holed, and being tarred with the same brush as the twats. I don't particularly like that Audi, but I don't think it is in quite the same league as this for twattishness!..

I don't think anyone believes all RR members are the same, and there are some top blokes on there.

It's just like saying ebay sellers, they're not all the same but there are enough to make the stereotype true

Personally, enough of the naval-gazing and onto the cars IMHO 8)

Fook me that's hideous, I don't know how they get away with driving it without getting pulled, here or anywhere in Germany for that matter. As for pigeon holing anybody, I am certainly not in that 'hit it with a stick' pigeon hole, far from it, but as I am on RR too I should get annoyed at anybody thinking everybody on there is like that, but I don't.

This whole ratlook thing is a copy of the rodders "barn find patina" look. On a '34 Ford it looks ok. On other stuff, it's a bit more dubious, although I prefer this to Halfords stick on tat

The last Golf I had 'rat looked' itself.

I do think the RR bashing should stop.

Why? This is a forum for discussion and so its members should be free to decide who and what they bash. That's more freedom of speech than you can get on RR. Love it or say nowt seems to be their mantra. I'm a member over there too btw.

Bash on I say.

I wasn't bashing RR by the way, I wasn't even bashing VW owners, I'm serious about buying a VW for the purpose. ;)

I think the beauty of the "Forum Scene" (if you will) is that they are all a bit different. Here is good fun, a bit like going to the pub with a bunch of mates, generally putting the world to rights and sharing a common, if unusual interest, i.e. shite cars.

RR, of which I am also a member, is, I feel, more kinda focused on the actual nuts and bolts of things. I've learned a lot of technical stuff there.

I'm also a member of MacDroitwich, which I enjoy a lot too for it's general zaniness and of course it's BL-centric twist.

I hope the owner knows that "Verfolgungsträger" doesnt mean anything...

Well said. Except that none of my mates like cars, so i cannae talk about that down t'pub, therefore making AS actually better than leaving the house and socialising.

Im on RR but much prefer to be on here , there are some truly magnificent innovative motors on RR , chevettev8 being just one I particulally like , theres also some horendous crap as well , not even worthy of shite status , live and let live I say . Every one has there own ideas on what a car should or shouldnt look like , I prefer not to follow any trends but make up my own but if people on RR want to tis up to them

Posted

Good words RP :D

Obviously everyone is allowed an opinion.

Like it or not , the owner of the car can do what he or she wants - Even if it is "following a trend".

Station i think with your newly perfected paint skills, you could make a small profit from this "Market"

As i live local, if you ever need a hand, Just ask

I kinda like the Audi lol

I do enjoy naturally worn and tatty lookin Veedubs I must admit but really dislike the poor paintstripper over the bonnet approach. Naturally worn looks proper and good, but a rusty bonnet just looks a bit half arsed really.

Posted

I don't get it at all, surely an old Audi 100 Avant with a 5-pot under the bonnet is cool enough without pretending to be the German police.

Posted

I think this idea might be a road to nowhere, its certainly true you get load of scene dweebs asking daft prices for their half arsed ratmobiles, but do they ever get sold? I doubt it. No-one wants to buy someone elses take on the scene, they want to 'build' their own if anything. I bet most if not all of these crappy ratted passats and polos, end up broken for spares of just wieghed in after a few unsuccessful ebay efforts. Thats why I think 'oh no' when I see one getting built, its always the last step before the fuggin furnace I reckon.

Maybe he's not interested in making his car 'cooler', perhaps he just wanted to commit the heinous, unforgivable SIN of having a bit of fun with it, in his own way  I bet Hitler started out by spraying his 1903 Horch in a daft shade of red, look where that got us...

Interesting topic... and also interesting to hear views on RR ;)

selling to scenesters is a good idea, it's easier to do on ebay with parts - every pinto part is of course "RS2000" - actually, that trick is older than ebay!

selling cars on RR? I'm surprised anyone does.

I agree 100% about this being a far better place to talk shite about old nails. Here's a a recent example of over moderation and sense of humour failure on RR..

oh no! a top gear thread...

I've recently noticed my posting there has gone from total forum god to occasional poster to borderline trolling the more pissed off I get too. Never a good sign.

Posted

Fair point SOC - though I have to admit, you do dread seeing another TG thread on RR, but like a car wreck, you can't help but have a look!

Posted

A RARE SERIOUS POST FROM MRDUKE

I don't mind the moderation style on RR (OMG I R ARSELICKER! etc etc) it's the mouthbreathing members that have been putting me off, and I think a lot of perceived fascism from the mods has been a reaction to them.

I can remember many many moons ago when HTW was doing most of the moderating himself and the rules (and enforcement) were exactly the same re off-topic, negativity etc, iirc the main reasoning behind them was that he didn't want it to end up like VZi. Members still got pissed off and some even stormed out, but the community was smaller and strong enough to not be that bothered. Now there's far too many twats on there (Bollo's 'friend' just one example) including people with no sense of humour, and the really sad thing is that you can't stop them coming.

The main reason AS doesn't suffer the same problem is the limited appeal - the cars lusted over here will never be trendy or part of any 'scene', so we don't get the mongs joining up. Simples.

I didn't really see that, I notice it's now locked.....

oh no what have a started? ;D

didnt fredtransit have some pics of these TG motors during filming?

maybe she posted on on autoshite, rather than here

I wonder why?

You noticed then...... Bet none of the Admin did, and if they did, did they care? Nah cos it's RR, the biggest thing on the internet. If you don't like it, you can just go.......

Seriously, I just don't get teh internet angrrrrr at all. I'm NOT defending RR through any fellatio-related reason, but the rules you hate so much have always been there. Why do the 'admin' owe you (or me, or anyone else) so much just because you've contributed posts? The 'admin' are among the nicest, most down-to-earth and non-judgemental people I've met, I don't know where this perceives 'arrogance' of theirs comes from.

Also, before anyone else jumps on it, I'm aware that the above makes me sound like a total gold-plated Cnut, I'm very much afraid that I couldn't give a flying fornication
