I have always liked BMC Farina’s and often wonder if I had been born 15 years earlier would I prefer these to Cortina’s. If I had more room and less cars I would like one like below. Since I was a small child I have thought an A60 estate is a great looking car:

Followed a lovely black and white Farina Estate the other day working for its living towing a trailer load of pallets.Always amazes me how they ran completely unchanged up to 1971.When the competition were face-lifting stuff every couple of years.

Much like the Minor! Although that did of course change in various ways through its production life, but not in any way that made it look less like a product of the 1940s...

 

Personally, mine is the VW Type 3 fastback (squarebacks don't really do it for me in the same way). Or even the Type 4, though they're like hobby horse manure now.

Yes,last update in 1961.The 1800 was supposed to have replaced it in 1964,the Maxi replaced the A60 in 1969,but carried on as a Morris until the Marina killed it in 1971.Sold well too.Think they were selling about 40k a year in the late sixties,so about the same as the Corsa last year.

That particular example belongs to the local cabbie here who is a hopeless BLARG addict. His Equipe is absolutely immaculate and I don't think I've ever seen another one. Ironically I imagine values are quite similar to Mk1 Golf simply because of rarity. 

Said cabbie also has an R8 (which is pretty rough TBH although he spent a lot getting it MoT'd) and last year bought his way into the winner's circle by getting a black Maestro Turbo.

Strange you should mention Cortinas and Farinas (that rhymes). I was just looking at this scanned picture and talking to my Dad about his cars. His mk2 Cortina, mk2 Escort 1600 and Beetle left him stranded but the Oxford always got him home.

I wonder where I caught the bug from?

I really, really want a Panhard 24CT.

  

Obviously it is going to be total grief.   Expensive.  Unreliable.  Impossible to work on.  Will have been badly bodged by a previous owner.  All the spares will have been bought up by some bloke in a shed who won't talk to you.   Everyone in a Porsche/BMW/MGB etc. will hate you/carve you up/want to race you.  They are not actually that fast anyway.  First time you park it, somebody will side-swipe it with a supermarket trolley.  And the Mrs. won't like it, and you will end up living in it. 

But just look at it.  Especially those windscreen wipers.  I still want one.

Yes, without any direct experience of them, an excellent 'want.'   I agree with your summary of the probable reality of acquiring one.  Many years ago (1980s) I came close to buying a Tatra 603 and still sort of regret being bullied out of it by my late wife who reckoned a new kitchen  was more useful.  Now, with more experience of life and cars, I realise I should have resisted the kitchen and bought a half decent DS instead but eventually succeeded in buying a Citroen CX GTi Turbo 2 which wasn't too painful for the 9 months I owned it.  I used to see an occasional Panhard at car meets in Bucks/Oxon area but never the glorious 24ct variety.

Most (if not all) Alfas from the early 80s 'black plastic' phase make me tumescent. I think it's just the sheer exotic nature of something sporty, Italian and soluble contrasts sharply when so much of the UK was mainly Cortinas and Maxis. 

It could also be because they're now rare as an honest Tory.

I also remember having impure thoughts about the Accord Aerodeck. What a clever design - sporty and practical. And pop up lights for maximum cool points. 

They didn't seem to sell well I think, not sure if they were too fUtUrIsTiC for the 80s buyer.

It was a great car, IMHO only 2nd to the CRX of that era. I drove several of each when I worked for a Honda dealership in the 80s.

I'd really like a Carlton estate. Or a Senator. Or a mk1 Cavalier in that nice dark red......

I saw one of those at an auction in about 1987 and just fell for the noise. I never did get one in either GTV6 or Alfa 75 guise.
